Campgrounds near Allegany, New York
Allegany sits in Cattaraugus County in western New York, minutes from the northern boundary of Allegany State Park. The park is the anchor for RV travel in the area, with two main developed areas (Red House to the north and Quaker to the south) plus hundreds of campsites, cabins, and cottages spread across roughly 65,000 acres of forested hills.
Outside the state park, private RV parks in the surrounding towns pick up demand during peak weekends and often offer full hookups that state sites lack. Lake Lane Campground and Riverhurst Park Campground sit closest to the village, while Shamrock Pines Campground, Camp Emerald Acres, and Triple R Camping Resort and Trailer Sales give travelers additional options within a short drive.
The combination of a large public park and several private grounds makes Allegany a practical base for families running a first RV trip, weekend anglers, and travelers routing between Buffalo, Erie, and the Pennsylvania Wilds.
Things to do around Allegany
Allegany State Park drives most of the recreation. Red House Lake and Quaker Lake both allow non-motorized boating and kayaking, and small motorboats are permitted on many park waters. Both areas have sandy swimming beaches staffed by lifeguards during summer hours. Hundreds of miles of trails cross the park, ranging from short family loops to longer backcountry routes.
Hiking targets include the Bear Caves grottoes, the Thunder Rocks bedrock formations, and the Stone Tower observation point. Fishing is popular on the park's lakes and streams; a New York State license is required. Cell service inside the park is spotty in places, so downloading maps in advance is smart.
Outside the park, the Allegheny River, Seneca Nation attractions, and the shops of nearby Ellicottville round out rainy-day and evening options.

Peak camping season at Allegany State Park runs from late June through August, when demand for cabins, cottages, and RV sites is highest and minimum-stay rules apply to some units. Weekends in July and August book out well ahead, particularly in the Cain Hollow and Red House loops.
Late May through mid-June is quieter and cooler, with black flies possible in the deep woods but far more site availability. September and early October bring fall foliage across the hardwood ridges, which is a busy secondary peak, especially on weekends. Reservations for fall color weekends should be locked in early.
Winter is cold and snowy, with heavy lake-effect snowfall common in the region. Most tent and RV loops close for the season, though the park keeps year-round cottages, including the Fancher Cottages, open for winter stays. RVers should watch forecasts closely from November through March and confirm which loops and hookups are operating before arrival.
How to book campsites near Allegany
Sites, cabins, and cottages inside Allegany State Park are booked through the New York State Parks reservation system online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Reservations open up to nine months ahead and same-day reservations close at 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Private campgrounds around Allegany, including Lake Lane Campground, Riverhurst Park Campground, Shamrock Pines Campground, Camp Emerald Acres, and Triple R Camping Resort and Trailer Sales, run their own booking systems and typically hold sites with a deposit. Full-hookup pull-throughs at private parks fill first for holiday weekends, so target those releases early.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Allegany is forested and hilly, with narrow paved and some unpaved park roads. Renters in larger Class A or long fifth-wheel rigs should check length limits on specific loops before booking, especially in older sections of Allegany State Park.
This is active bear country. Food, coolers, and garbage must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or approved container, and wildlife guidance is provided at check-in. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with New York State rules against moving untreated wood over long distances.
Cell coverage is inconsistent inside the state park, showers and picnic pavilions are available, and a gift shop and natural history museum operate near the Red House administration building.
