Camping near Canton, New York
Canton sits in St. Lawrence County in New York's North Country, roughly midway between the Adirondack foothills and the St. Lawrence River. RV travelers using Canton as a base can reach several state park campgrounds within an hour's drive, plus cross-border options in Ontario for travelers carrying proper documentation.
Higley Flow State Park sits among the Adirondack foothills on the Raquette River, with wooded campsites, a sandy beach, and river access popular for paddling and fishing. To the north, Coles Creek State Park is located on the St. Lawrence River, on the west bank of Coles Creek, in St. Lawrence County, and supports boating, fishing, hunting, picnicking, and camping. Eel Weir State Park lies west of Canton along the Oswegatchie River.
Across the international border, Upper Canada Campground and the Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday give travelers access to the Ontario side of the Seaway corridor, including the Upper Canada Village heritage area. Together these campgrounds cover a mix of waterfront, wooded, and full-hookup options.
Things to do in Canton
Water recreation dominates the area. Coles Creek's facilities include a beach, a marina, boat launch sites, boat rentals, dockage, campsites, dumping stations, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, food concessions, and a playground. Higley Flow's Raquette River is well suited to paddling and canoeing, and its trail network includes interpretive signage useful for families with younger kids.
Eel Weir State Park offers quieter fishing access along the Oswegatchie. On the Ontario side, Upper Canada Village and the Long Sault Parkway trail network sit close to Upper Canada Campground, while the Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday puts Ottawa's museums and parks within a short drive.
Inland from Canton, day trips reach into the Adirondack Park for hiking, and the St. Lawrence Seaway corridor provides scenic drives and river viewpoints.

The North Country camping season is short and clearly defined. Most New York State Parks campgrounds in this region operate roughly from mid-May through Columbus Day weekend in October, with peak demand between late June and Labor Day.
July and August bring the warmest, driest camping weather and the highest booking pressure, particularly for waterfront sites on Lake St. Lawrence and the Raquette River. Blackflies and mosquitoes peak from late May into June, so travelers arriving early in the season should pack repellent and consider screened shelters. September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and early fall color across the Adirondack foothills.
Winter closes the state park campgrounds entirely. Snow and sub-freezing temperatures persist from December into March, and RV travel through the region during those months is generally impractical. Shoulder-season openings in May and October can involve overnight frost and limited facility services.
How to book campgrounds near Canton
New York State Parks campgrounds, including Higley Flow, Coles Creek, and Eel Weir, are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica portal at newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 9 months in advance, so travelers targeting holiday weekends or waterfront loops should book early.
Upper Canada Campground is operated by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission and reserved through its Ontario reservation site. Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday is booked directly through KOA. U.S. travelers crossing into Ontario need a passport or approved travel document for every occupant.
What to expect at Canton campgrounds
Expect a mix of open and wooded sites, with electric hookups common at the larger state parks and full hookups more typical on the Ontario side. The Coles Creek campground has 232 tent and trailer sites, 147 of which include electric hookups, and the RV length limit in the Loop A North campground is 40 feet. Larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking.
Cell coverage is reliable in Canton and along main highways but can drop inside wooded loops. Pets are allowed but must be leashed, and quiet hours are enforced at state park campgrounds. Firewood should be sourced locally to comply with New York's rules on invasive pests.
