Camping near Copake Lake, New York
Copake Lake sits in southeastern Columbia County in New York's Hudson Valley, tucked into the foothills of the Taconic and Berkshire ranges near the point where New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut meet. The area draws RV travelers with a mix of state-park campgrounds and privately run family resorts, all within a short drive of the lake itself.
Taconic State Park anchors the region, covering more than 5,000 acres of land along an 11-mile border separating New York from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Its two developed camping areas, Copake Falls and Rudd Pond, both operate through the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica and sit within a short drive of Copake Lake. Lake Taghkanic State Park lies just to the west, right off the Taconic State Parkway.
On the private side, Copake Camping Resort focuses on full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and family programming. Waubeeka Family Campground and Brook-n-Wood Family Campground round out the options for travelers looking for a resort-style stay rather than a rustic state-park loop.
Things to do around Copake Lake
Water time is the main draw. Copake Lake itself supports boating and fishing, and nearby state parks add swimming beaches: Lake Taghkanic State Park features a swimming beach, boat launch sites, and rowboat, paddleboat, and kayak rentals, while Rudd Pond offers boating on a scenic 64-acre pond with rowboat and kayak rentals; gasoline motors are prohibited, though small electric trolling motors are permitted.
Hiking is the other headline activity. Trails lead from the Copake Falls area toward Bash Bish Falls across the Massachusetts border, and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail passes through the area for walking, running, and biking. Families staying at Copake Camping Resort will also find a heated pool, mini golf, a playground, and organized weekend activities on site.
Off-property, the region offers the Hudson River town of Hudson, Olana State Historic Site, and Catamount ski area within an easy drive.

Camping in this part of the Hudson Valley is a warm-weather activity. The Taconic State Park Copake Falls campsites typically operate from early May into mid-November, with cabins and cottages running from mid-May into the fall. Rudd Pond operates on a shorter warm-season window, and its swimming area opens weekends and holidays beginning Memorial Day weekend and closes after the third weekend in August. Copake Camping Resort runs from May 1 through October 31.
Summer is peak season. At Copake Falls, weekend swimming begins the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, expands at the end of June, and continues through Labor Day, with swimming hours between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sites near the water fill quickly on weekends, and the area draws heavy traffic from the New York City metro.
For cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color, September and October are strong choices. Winter access is limited: most campgrounds are closed, though the state parks stay open year-round for day use, including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

How to book a campsite
New York State Park campgrounds around Copake Lake all use the same reservation system. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites. Bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
For summer weekends and holidays, book as early as the window allows, especially for lakeside sites at Lake Taghkanic and platform or trailer sites at Copake Falls. A camping party may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the party and equipment must leave the facility for 48 hours before registering again.
Private campgrounds such as Copake Camping Resort, Waubeeka Family Campground, and Brook-n-Wood Family Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines.
What to expect on site
State-park sites here are rustic by RV standards. Copake Falls has over 100 campsites, including ground and platform tent sites plus approximately 30 sites that can accommodate camping trailers up to 26 feet; trailer sites do not offer hookups, and centrally located restroom and shower facilities serve all camping loops. Rudd Pond has 15 ground sites and 26 platform sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring with grill, plus public restrooms and a hot-water shower house.
RVers who want hookups will be better served by the private resorts. Copake Camping Resort offers full-hookup RV sites with water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer, and cable, plus a heated pool, a general store, mini golf, and cabin rentals in several styles.
Check-in at state park campgrounds runs from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and campers must register by 9 p.m. on the day of arrival or risk cancellation. Cell coverage and Wi-Fi can be inconsistent in the surrounding hills.

weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Copake Lake?
You'll do great, Copake Lake is one of the friendlier places to learn. Roads like Route 22, Route 23, and County Route 7 are mostly two-lane rural highways with gentle curves and light traffic outside of summer weekends. Your host will give a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and tank dumping, and you can call them anytime during your trip. Important: RVs are not permitted on the Taconic State Parkway (passenger cars only), so use Route 22 or I-90 (the NY Thruway) instead. Booking a Class B campervan or small travel trailer is a confidence-boosting first step.
dot.ny.gov/What happens if I break down during my Copake Lake RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Cell service is solid along Route 22 and around Hillsdale and Hudson, though it can get spotty up near Bash Bish Falls or in the deep hollows of Taconic State Park, so screenshot your host's contact info before you head out. The nearest full-service RV repair options are in Hudson and Great Barrington, MA, both within about 30 minutes. Your host is also a quick text away and usually knows the rig inside and out.

Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, just message them through the listing before booking to confirm and arrange any paperwork. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan doesn't extend there. Stick to the U.S. and Canada and you've got endless options.

Gas in Columbia County typically runs slightly above the national average, with stations in Hillsdale, Hudson, and Great Barrington being the most convenient fill-up spots near Copake Lake. Diesel is widely available along the NY Thruway. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop through the Hudson Valley and Berkshires in a Class C, budget about $120-$180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Hudson before heading east, prices climb once you cross into Massachusetts.
