Campgrounds near Gates, New York
Gates sits on the western edge of Rochester in Monroe County, giving RV travelers quick access to Lake Ontario beaches, the Genesee River valley, and the western Finger Lakes. The I-490 and I-390 corridors put most nearby campgrounds within a 20 to 45 minute drive, which makes Gates a practical base for a multi-stop trip through western New York.
Options range from full-service private resorts to a large state-park campground on the lake. The Ridge NY in Le Roy is a private park with 120 sites open May 1 through October 31, while Timberline Lake Park Camping and Southwoods RV Resort offer family-oriented private-park amenities closer to the Rochester suburbs. Adventure Bound Southwoods rounds out the private options with resort-style features.
For a public-land experience, Hamlin Beach State Park sits on the south shore of Lake Ontario and offers a beach, car-top boat launch site, a nature trail, individual campsites with showers and dumping stations, picnic tables, and a playground. It is the largest campground in the immediate region and the most in-demand during summer weekends.
Things to do near Gates
Lake Ontario is the biggest regional draw. Hamlin Beach State Park's clear water, sandy beaches, and 264 tent and trailer campsites bring thousands of visitors each year, and guests can launch car-top boats, fish for salmon and trout, and enjoy the picnic facilities. The Yanty Creek Marsh area at the east end of the park has a mile-long self-guided trail suitable for families, and the park has 6 miles of hiking and biking trails.
Inland, Letchworth State Park (roughly an hour south) offers deep river gorges and waterfalls, and the Erie Canalway Trail runs through the Rochester area for flat biking and walking. Private parks add their own recreation: The Ridge NY in Le Roy offers biking, hiking, jet skiing, mini golf, and outdoor swimming, plus a live-music series at the on-site venue.
In town, the Strong National Museum of Play and the Seneca Park Zoo are solid rainy-day picks for families.

The RV season in the Rochester area is short and concentrated. Hamlin Beach State Park is open year-round for day use but the campground only opens from mid-May through early October, and because the beach is the biggest draw, summer is the busiest time in the park. Private parks follow a similar calendar: The Ridge NY runs May 1 through October 31, and most nearby private campgrounds close by late fall.
Weather shapes the experience. Rochester and the Genesee valley have a fairly humid continental climate strongly modified by the Great Lakes. Precipitation is rather evenly distributed through the year, and snowfall is heavy but highly variable over short distances. Last frosts usually occur by late April near the lake but as late as mid-May south of the Thruway, which is why campgrounds hold off on opening until then.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, and both shoulder seasons offer the chance to spot migrating birds. Winter brings snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing at Hamlin Beach even when the campground itself is closed.

How to book campgrounds near Gates
State-park sites go through ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and sites become available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day, then 9AM daily from the day after Labor Day through March 14. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Gates, NY?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Gates and the surrounding Rochester area. Just turn on the Pet-Friendly filter when searching on RVezy and you will see motorhomes and trailers that welcome four-legged co-pilots. Dogs love the trails at Hamlin Beach State Park along Lake Ontario, the leashed pathways through Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East), and the shoreline at Webster Park just east of Rochester. Tip: message the host before booking to share your dog's size and your plans, and pack a portable water bowl because summer days along the lake can hit the mid-80s.
parks.ny.gov/parks/hamlinbeachCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Gates, NY?
Yes, RV delivery in Gates is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a big rig through downtown Rochester or onto I-490. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see which hosts offer it. Delivery fees are usually a flat rate plus a per-mile charge after a set radius, and the details are listed right on each listing page.

newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Gates, NY?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Gates runs from late May through mid-October, with the peak being late June through early September, when daytime highs typically sit in the 75 to 85 degree range and Lake Ontario beaches are in full swing. September and early October are a local insider favorite: cooler nights in the 50s, fewer bugs, harvest season at Finger Lakes wineries, and brilliant fall foliage along the Genesee River. Most campgrounds in the Rochester region operate seasonally from May through Columbus Day weekend. Winter RV rentals are limited because of lake-effect snow, so plan around the shoulder seasons if you want a quieter trip.
weather.gov/buf/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Gates, NY?
You will do great, first time renting an RV in Gates is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, propane, slide-outs, water system, and dump procedure, and they are reachable by message throughout your trip if anything pops up. Many Gates and Rochester hosts also offer delivery, so the RV arrives set up and ready at your campsite. Start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first outing, and pick a close-in destination like Hamlin Beach State Park (25 miles) so you can settle in fast. RVezy support is also available if you need a hand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002551893-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Gates, NY RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the New York State Thruway (I-90), a dead battery at a Letchworth State Park overlook, or a lockout at Hamlin Beach is just a phone call away. Roadside covers towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockout service, and fuel delivery. Your host is also your first call for any quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy support is available around the clock to help coordinate. Save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of Gates and you will travel with real peace of mind.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my RV rental from Gates, NY into Canada?
Yes, cross-border trips to Canada are allowed on many RVezy rentals, and Gates is perfectly positioned for it: the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge near Niagara Falls is only about 80 miles west, putting Toronto roughly three hours away. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Before booking, message the host to confirm Canada travel and request a written authorization letter for the border, since Canada Border Services may ask for it. You will need passports for everyone in the RV, and pets need up-to-date rabies certificates. Niagara Falls, Toronto, and Prince Edward County wine region are all easy multi-day add-ons.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlWhat should I budget for fuel on my RV road trip from Gates, NY?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on a Gates, NY RV trip, so plan smart and you will stay on budget. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically run 6 to 10 MPG. New York gas prices tend to sit slightly above the national average, so check apps like GasBuddy and consider filling up across the Pennsylvania border on longer trips south, where prices are often lower. A 300-mile loop to Niagara Falls and back from Gates in a Class C runs roughly $90 to $130 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: Pilot, Flying J, and Sheetz stations along I-90 offer RV-friendly pumps with high-clearance lanes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Gates, NY?
For New York State Parks like Hamlin Beach, Letchworth, and Sampson, book through the state's ReserveAmerica system the moment your dates open, which is up to nine months in advance. Summer weekends and the entire month of July sell out fast, especially holiday weekends. Private campgrounds like Southwoods RV Resort in Byron or the Rochester / Hamlin KOA can typically be booked three to four months out for prime weekends, or a week or two ahead for midweek stays. For a fall foliage RV trip in late September or early October, two months ahead is usually plenty. Booking your RVezy rental first and then locking in the campsite is a great strategy.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What is driving like around Gates, NY in an RV?
Driving an RV around Gates is refreshingly manageable. The town sits just west of Rochester with easy access to I-490, I-390, and the New York State Thruway (I-90), all wide, well-maintained, and RV-friendly. Avoid the older parkways like the Lake Ontario State Parkway, which has low bridges that restrict tall vehicles. Winter brings serious lake-effect snow from November through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Watch for spring potholes after winter thaw, and use the truck lanes on I-90 hills. If city driving feels intimidating, book a host who offers RV delivery in Gates and skip the urban legs entirely.

New York State Parks like Hamlin Beach and Letchworth offer electric sites with shared water spigots, central dump stations, and hot showers (bring a 50-foot drinking water hose just in case). Truck stops along I-90 also offer RV dump and freshwater access on travel days.

Wi-Fi varies (many hosts offer a mobile hotspot add-on), and onboard generators are common on motorhomes for boondocking. Travel trailers offer similar layouts minus the cab. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gates%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
RVezy makes payment simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at the time of booking (never hand cash to the host), and funds are released to the host after the trip starts successfully, so you are protected. The security deposit is a separate authorization hold on your card, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, placed shortly before pickup and released after drop-off assuming no damage or extra cleaning. To avoid any deposit issues on your Gates, NY RV rental, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a dump station before returning.
