Campgrounds near Greenport, New York
Greenport sits at the tip of Long Island's North Fork, roughly two hours east of New York City by road and a short ferry hop from Shelter Island. The village is surrounded by farmland, vineyards, and Peconic Bay shoreline, which shapes the local RV camping options: a small number of private parks on the North Fork itself, and a broader ring of state parks and KOAs across Long Island Sound in coastal Connecticut, reachable via the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London.
RV renters generally choose between staying on the North Fork to focus on Greenport, Southold, and Montauk day trips, or basing across the Sound for easier access to Rocky Neck and Hammonasset beaches. Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport is the closest full-service option, offering full hookup and water-electric sites, while Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA, Rocky Neck State Park, and Hammonasset Beach State Park cluster along the Connecticut shoreline within a short drive of the New London ferry terminal.
Riverdale Farm CampSites in Gilead, Connecticut, extends the search inland for travelers who prefer wooded, family-style camping over beachfront.
Things to do near Greenport
The North Fork's draw is a mix of working waterfront and agriculture. Greenport village has a walkable harbor, a restored carousel in Mitchell Park, and regular passenger ferry service to Shelter Island. Wineries and farm stands line Route 25 between Riverhead and Orient, and Orient Beach State Park offers a long bayside swim beach at the peninsula's tip.
Across the Sound, Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park anchor Connecticut's shoreline with sand beaches, boardwalks, and nature centers. Rocky Neck features a half-mile crescent-shaped sandy beach with clear waters and stone-free sand ideal for swimming, and Hammonasset is the state's largest shoreline park with paved bike paths connecting to Meigs Point.
Montauk and the Hamptons are accessible via the South Ferry through Shelter Island, giving RV renters a full day loop without repositioning the vehicle.

The prime RV window on the North Fork and Connecticut shoreline runs from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Eastern Long Island Kampground operates on a seasonal schedule that typically runs May through late October, and Riverdale Farm CampSites follows a similar spring-through-fall pattern, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm dates directly before booking.
July and August are peak. Weekends at Hammonasset Beach State Park and Rocky Neck State Park fill months in advance, and the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London sells out routinely for RV-length vehicles on summer Fridays and Sundays. September and early October are the sweet spot for lower crowds, comfortable temperatures, and active harvest activity at North Fork farms and wineries.
Winter camping is limited. Most private parks close, Connecticut state park campgrounds shut down after mid-October, and coastal storms and nor'easters can bring wind, heavy rain, and occasional snow. Late-summer and early-fall Atlantic tropical activity occasionally forces short-notice closures on both shorelines.
How to book
Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park, are reserved through Reserve America, with sites bookable up to 11 months ahead of the arrival date and a two-night minimum stay. Popular weekends at Hammonasset are typically claimed within minutes of release, so setting a calendar reminder for the booking window is the practical approach.
Private parks, including Eastern Long Island Kampground, Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA, and Riverdale Farm CampSites, book directly through the campground or through the KOA reservation platform. For summer weekends, three to six months of lead time is realistic. Cross Sound Ferry reservations for the RV should be locked in as soon as the campground is confirmed, since ferry inventory for oversize vehicles is limited.
What to expect
Sites on the North Fork tend to be compact and level, with a mix of full-hookup and water-electric options. Coastal Connecticut state parks lean rustic: Rocky Neck offers electric on some loops but no sewer hookups, and as of mid-2026 the dump station at Rocky Neck was closed for repairs, so travelers should confirm status before arrival. Hammonasset has a mix of wooded and open sites, and both parks enforce strict quiet hours and site occupancy limits.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across both shorelines, though it can weaken inside dense tree cover at inland parks. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, particularly near salt marshes, so bug spray and daily tick checks are practical.
Grocery, propane, and dump-station access is straightforward in Greenport, Southold, Niantic, and Madison. Roads on the North Fork are two-lane and slow in summer traffic, so building extra time into arrival plans is wise.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Greenport, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Greenport, NY?
RV rental in Greenport, NY is more affordable than most people expect for the Hamptons-adjacent North Fork. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes run $200 to $325 per night, and luxury Class A rigs can reach $400+ during peak July and August weekends. The smartest way to score a cheap RV rental in Greenport is to book midweek, travel in shoulder season (late May or September), or choose a stationary delivery setup at a local campground so you skip mileage fees. Pro tip: North Fork wine country gets booked solid for summer weekends by April, so locking in your RV early saves both money and stress.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Greenport%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Greenport, NY?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Greenport, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers used recreationally, no matter the size. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country driver's license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised at how simple the licensing side really is, leaving you free to focus on planning your Shelter Island ferry day and winery stops.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs my RV rental in Greenport protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental booked through RVezy in Greenport includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 25 with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV up to the plan limits, giving you real financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose your protection level, picking the coverage that matches your comfort and budget. Hosts do not select your coverage, you do. Whether you're parked at a North Fork campground or driving the causeway toward Orient Point, you'll know help is one phone call away. That safety net is part of what makes a North Fork RV trip stress-free, even for first-timers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Greenport RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, so the rules are consistent and renter-friendly. There is a money-back grace period after booking, and cancellations made well in advance of your trip start are typically eligible for partial or full refunds depending on timing. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center. The takeaway: locking in your North Fork RV early is low-risk, and you are protected if plans shift. That flexibility matters when you are planning months ahead for a peak Greenport summer weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Greenport RV rental?
Absolutely. Greenport is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Long Island, and pet-friendly RV rental in Greenport is easy to find on RVezy. Just filter by Pet-Friendly when browsing listings, and you will see rigs whose owners welcome four-legged guests (often for a small cleaning fee). Once you arrive, dogs are welcome on-leash at Orient Beach State Park outside the summer swim season, along the Greenport waterfront, and at many North Fork wineries with outdoor patios. Heads up: Wildwood State Park does not allow pets in the campground, so plan your overnight stays accordingly. Pro tip: choose a campground in Greenport Village so you are walking distance from Moore's Woods trails.
parks.ny.gov/parks/106/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Greenport?
Yes, RV delivery in Greenport is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is perfect if it is your first time renting an RV. Many North Fork hosts will drive the rig directly to your campsite, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. You skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a large vehicle through the narrow streets of Greenport Village. Delivery fees vary by distance but typically range from $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: message a host before booking to confirm delivery to your specific campground, especially for Orient Beach or Shelter Island setups.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive from Greenport on a typical RV rental?
You have plenty of road to roam. Most RVezy hosts in Greenport offer 100 to 150 miles per day included, with options to add unlimited mileage or buy extra miles upfront at a discount. That is more than enough for the classic North Fork loop or a day trip to the South Fork. From Greenport, you can reach Montauk Point Lighthouse in about 50 miles (via the North Ferry through Shelter Island), Sag Harbor in about 25 miles, Riverhead and the Tanger Outlets in about 25 miles, and Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island in about 75 miles. Pro tip: if you are planning a longer NYC RV road trip from Greenport, ask the host about unlimited mileage packages before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Greenport%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Greenport, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Greenport. The top picks: North Fork Resort (formerly Eastern Long Island Kampground) on Queen Street has full hookups, a pool, and accepts rigs up to 60 feet just two miles from Main Street. McCann's Campground is a quieter municipal park inside Greenport Village with full hookups, tucked next to Moore's Woods nature preserve. Wildwood State Park in nearby Wading River (about 25 miles west) offers 600 acres of forest and Long Island Sound beach access. Indian Island County Park in Riverhead is a great backup with level sites near Peconic Bay. Pro tip: North Fork Resort sites book up by spring for July and August, so reserve as early as possible.
parks.ny.gov/parks/61/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for a Greenport RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Greenport RV trip, but here's the local secret: September is the sweet spot. Summer highs hover around 76°F in July and August with warm 70°F nights, but crowds peak alongside the heat. September brings 70°F days, cool comfortable nights around 65°F, fewer tourists, harvest season at North Fork wineries, and the famous Greenport Maritime Festival in late September. June is also lovely with 67°F highs and long daylight. Winter (December through March) drops to 31°F to 45°F highs with occasional snow, and most campgrounds close, though some hardy hosts still rent. Pro tip: book by February for any Saturday between June 15 and Labor Day.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Greenport?
You'll do great, and Greenport is honestly one of the easiest places to start. First time renting an RV? Your RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you the propane, water systems, slide-outs, generator, and dash controls before you drive off. Most North Fork roads (Route 25, Route 48, Sound Avenue) are flat, well-marked, and have generous shoulders, which is rare for the Northeast. Stick to those main arteries and skip the narrow lanes inside Greenport Village itself. Better yet, choose delivery so the host drops the RV at your campground and you barely have to drive it. Pro tip: practice in the Tanger Outlets parking lot in Riverhead before heading east, and you'll be a pro by lunch.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/2024_NYSDOT_HDM_Chapter_2.htmWhat if my RV breaks down during my Greenport trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is always one phone call away whether you are parked at Orient Beach State Park or driving Route 25 between vineyards. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also typically a phone call away for quick questions about quirks specific to their rig. Long Island has plenty of nearby service centers in Riverhead and Southold if a longer repair is needed. Pro tip: snap a quick video of the host's walkthrough at pickup so you have it on your phone if you need to troubleshoot the water heater or awning later from the campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Greenport RV rental on a longer road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Greenport opens up the entire Northeast. Popular routes include heading west along the North Fork to NYC (about 95 miles), looping the Hamptons and Montauk Point (about 50 miles east), or taking the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London, Connecticut for a New England leg into Mystic, Newport, or the Berkshires. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed if you confirm with your host in advance and verify protection coverage applies. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the Cross Sound Ferry accepts RVs, but you will want to reserve a vehicle slot well ahead, especially for summer Friday departures.
rvezy.com/blog/can-i-take-my-rvezy-rental-across-the-canada-us-borderHow much will I spend on fuel during my Greenport RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Class C motorhomes in Greenport typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). New York gas prices on the East End run slightly higher than the state average, so expect around $3.50 to $3.90 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel. For a typical 3-day, 200-mile North Fork loop in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $100 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Riverhead before driving east, gas stations on the North Fork are limited past Southold and prices climb closer to Orient Point.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Greenport?
Book early, especially for summer. New York State Parks like Wildwood and Hither Hills open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and beach-adjacent sites disappear within minutes of release at 8 AM ET on weekdays. For private parks like North Fork Resort and McCann's Campground in Greenport, aim to book by February or March for July and August stays. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is easier, often bookable 4 to 6 weeks out. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, reserve the campground first, then book your RVezy rental, that way you know exactly where the RV is being delivered and your host can plan the drop-off.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Greenport?
Driving conditions in Greenport are some of the most RV-friendly in the Northeast. Route 25 (Main Road) and Route 48 (North Road) are the two main arteries running east-west across the North Fork, both flat with wide shoulders and minimal grades. Summer Friday and Sunday afternoons bring heavy beach traffic on Route 25 east of Riverhead, so plan to drive midday or early morning. The streets inside Greenport Village itself are narrow with limited turnaround space, so avoid driving large Class A rigs downtown, choose delivery or park outside the village and bike in. Winter brings occasional snow and coastal nor'easters from December through March. Pro tip: check the Cross Sound Ferry schedule before crossing to Shelter Island during peak weekends.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Greenport offer?
You'll find solid amenities at North Fork campgrounds. North Fork Resort offers full hookups (water, 50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a pool, laundry, hot showers, fire rings, and a dump station on-site. McCann's Campground in Greenport has full and partial hookup sites plus communal restrooms. Wildwood State Park provides electric trailer sites, central water fill stations, hot showers, and a dump station near the exit. Most North Fork campgrounds have potable water spigots within easy reach of every loop. Pro tip: if you're heading to Orient Beach or boondocking for a day, top off fresh water and dump your tanks at North Fork Resort or Indian Island County Park's dump station in Riverhead before you go, both are convenient stops along Route 25.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's actually inside the RVs available in Greenport?
Plenty to make your stay comfortable. Most motorhome rental Greenport options on RVezy come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks for extra sleepers, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with A/C and propane furnace, a flat-screen TV, and a built-in generator or shore power hookup. Many also include outdoor awnings, Bluetooth stereos, and seatbelts for every passenger (legally required when driving). Campervan rental Greenport options are more compact but still cover the essentials beautifully. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenity list carefully, and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker or beach chairs, many include extras for free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Greenport%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Greenport RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Greenport offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include linen and kitchen packages ($50 to $100), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, outdoor chairs and tables, propane refills, beach gear, and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $150 for pet-friendly RV rental in Greenport). Delivery and setup is the most-loved add-on, typically $2 to $5 per mile. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles at $0.35 to $0.50 each, or upgrade to unlimited mileage upfront. Pickup and dropoff times are set by the host and shown on the listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus linens plus a generator package and your only job becomes choosing which winery to visit first.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Greenport%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Greenport, NY, RVezy charges your card for the rental total, fees, and any add-ons through the platform, no cash or off-platform payments needed. A separate security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and is held, not charged, unless there is damage or a policy violation. It is released after a clean return. To avoid issues: do the pre-trip walkthrough video with your host, return the RV on time with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if required. Pro tip: keep receipts for any fuel top-offs, they protect you if questions come up later.
