Campgrounds and RV parks near Greenport West, NY

The North Fork is built for slow travel: wine tastings, farm stands, kayaking on Peconic Bay, and the historic waterfront in Greenport village with its carousel and the Railroad Museum of Long Island. Cyclists ride the flat rural roads out to Orient Beach State Park at the tip of the fork. Across the Sound, Hammonasset offers over two miles of sandy beach, a boardwalk, and the Meigs Point Nature Center with programs for park visitors. Rocky Neck adds a half-mile crescent of stone-free beach, saltwater fishing for striped bass and bluefish, and trails through salt marsh to points like Baker's Cave, Tony's Nose, and Shipyard. Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos are all within a reasonable drive of the Niantic and Clinton campgrounds.

The camping season on both sides of Long Island Sound is short. Eastern Long Island Kampground typically operates from early May through the beginning of November. Connecticut's shoreline state parks run a tighter window: Hammonasset's campground opens in late May and closes in mid-October, while Rocky Neck's season begins in May and ends in early September. July and August are peak, with warm humid days, Long Island Sound water temperatures in the low 70s Fahrenheit by August, and campgrounds booked solid on weekends. Late June and early September are the sweet spot for RV travel: warm enough to swim, quieter sites, and better ferry availability. Fall brings striped bass action off the Rocky Neck shoreline and cooler nights that suit hiking the salt marsh trails. Winter closes the private and state campgrounds along this stretch. Atlantic hurricane and tropical storm activity peaks from August through October, and coastal parks occasionally close ahead of named storms, so trip plans in that window should stay flexible.

Eastern Long Island Kampground offers full and partial hookups on 20/30 amp service, a pool, laundry, dump station, and a maximum RV length around 38 feet. Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA is a full-service KOA with hookup pull-throughs, a pool, and other typical KOA amenities. State park sites are more rustic. Hammonasset's 550-plus grassy sites include a limited number with electric and water, most have no hookups, and RV length is capped at 35 feet. Rocky Neck's 160 sites have no utility hookups, though a dump station and potable water are available on site. Pets are not allowed in the Hammonasset or Rocky Neck campgrounds. Firewood from outside the local area is prohibited at both parks due to invasive-pest restrictions, and firewood can be purchased at the camp stores.
