Campgrounds near Madrid, New York
Madrid sits in St. Lawrence County in New York's North Country, a short drive from the St. Lawrence River and the Ontario border. RV travelers use the area as a base for river-based recreation, cross-border trips to Ottawa and Upper Canada Village, and access to the Adirondack foothills to the south.
The nearest developed campground is Coles Creek State Park, a New York state park on the south shore of Lake St. Lawrence with wooded and open sites near a swimming beach. Higley Flow State Park lies to the south on the Raquette River, with heavily wooded, spacious sites in the Adirondack foothills. Across the river in Ontario, Upper Canada Campground is a private family park near Morrisburg with two pools and easy access to Upper Canada Village, Mille Roches Campsite - St Lawrence sits on the Long Sault Parkway, and Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday offers full-service sites just off Highway 401.
Most sites in the region accommodate mid-size travel trailers and Class C motorhomes, with 30-amp electric commonly available and 50-amp on select sites. Sewer hookups at individual sites are less common on the U.S. state-park side, so plan for dump-station stops.
Things to do near Madrid
Water activities dominate the summer schedule. Coles Creek State Park has a swimming beach, marina, and boat launches on Lake St. Lawrence, with boating, fishing, and picnicking as the main draws. Higley Flow State Park adds a sandy Raquette River beach plus paddling and the Beaver Pond Nature Trail, whose interpretive signs describe six distinct habitats.
Across the river, Upper Canada Village is a nineteenth-century living-history site near Morrisburg, and the Long Sault Parkway strings together beaches and day-use areas on the St. Lawrence. Cyclists use the Waterfront Trail, which runs along the Ontario shore. Day trips commonly include Ottawa about an hour north of the border for museums and markets, with a passport required to cross.

The RV camping window in this part of northern New York is short. Higley Flow State Park operates from mid-May through Labor Day, while Coles Creek State Park runs from mid-May through Columbus Day, giving a slightly longer fall shoulder on the Lake St. Lawrence side. Trips outside those windows need to shift to private parks or the Ontario side, where Parks of the St. Lawrence campgrounds typically run from early May into October.
July and August are the busiest months, driven by warm river temperatures, long daylight hours, and school breaks. Waterfront sites, especially at Coles Creek, fill quickly for weekends and Canadian and U.S. holiday periods. Booking several weeks or months ahead is standard practice for those dates. Late May, June, and the post-Labor Day shoulder are quieter and better for families who want easier availability.
Winter is cold and snowy, and developed campgrounds are closed. Higley Flow's trail network stays open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, and ice fishing is allowed on the reservoir, but there are no serviced RV sites during that period.
How to book
New York state park sites at Coles Creek State Park and Higley Flow State Park are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica system. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, walk-ins are permitted on campsites only, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. The maximum booking window is nine months out, and a camping party may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights.
Ontario sites operated by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, including Mille Roches Campsite - St Lawrence, are booked through the Parks of the St. Lawrence reservation system, with individual campground operating dates that vary by season. Upper Canada Campground and Cardinal / Ottawa South KOA Holiday are private parks booked directly through their own websites.
What to expect on site
Sites at Coles Creek State Park are a mix of wooded and open, near the swimming beach on Lake St. Lawrence, with electric hookups on most sites and a three-lane dump station rather than full sewer at each pad. Access roads inside the park can be rough in spots, and waterfront lots fill first.
Higley Flow State Park sites are spacious and separated by pine trees, with blacktop driveways, picnic tables, and fire rings. Terrain is hilly and heavily wooded, which limits big-rig maneuvering on some loops. Both state parks may ask for current proof of rabies vaccination at check-in for dogs.
Cell coverage in the North Country is patchy once off the main highways. Bring a card for firewood, and expect basic showers and flush toilets rather than resort-style amenities on the state-park side.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Madrid, NY
How much does an RV rental in Madrid cost and how can I save?
RV rental in Madrid, NY is one of the more affordable ways to explore the St. Lawrence Valley, with nightly rates typically ranging from about $95 to $175 for travel trailers, $135 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Madrid,%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Madrid, NY?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Madrid for nearly every rig on RVezy. New York State only requires an 'R' endorsement for recreational vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers fall well below that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set to roll into the North Country.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/new-york-state-learner-permit-and-driver-license-class-descriptionsWhat protection is included with my Madrid RV rental?
Every RV rental in Madrid, NY booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward the St. Lawrence River with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your preferred coverage tier (not the host) during checkout, picking the level that matches your comfort and budget. Combined with the host's pickup walkthrough, you'll feel ready, covered, and confident from the moment you turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Madrid RV trip?
Booking your Madrid RV trip is genuinely low-risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period shortly after you book. That means if your plans change soon after reservation, you have built-in flexibility. Refund amounts depend on how close to your trip start date you cancel, so the sooner you let RVezy know, the more options you have. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for peak summer weekends, then relax knowing the policy has you covered if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Madrid?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Madrid options are easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the 'Pet-Friendly' filter and you'll see rigs whose hosts welcome your dog or cat. Many St. Lawrence County hosts are pet owners themselves and are happy to share tips for traveling with animals. Once you're on the road, dogs are welcome on-leash at Robert Moses State Park in Massena and on most St. Lawrence County trails along the Grass River. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee, share your pet's size, and ask about their favorite nearby dog-friendly swim spots.
parks.ny.gov/parks/robertmoses/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Madrid?
Yes, RV delivery Madrid is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer or just don't feel like towing. Many RVezy hosts in the Madrid, Massena, Potsdam, and Ogdensburg area will deliver the RV directly to your campsite at Coles Creek, Robert Moses State Park, or even your own driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. To find these listings, filter by 'Delivery' on RVezy and check the host's delivery radius and per-mile rate. Pro tip: delivery to a state park along Route 37 is a game-changer for stress-free family RV trip Madrid planning.
parks.ny.gov/parks/colescreek/details.aspxHow far can I travel from Madrid and are unlimited mileage RVs available?
Madrid, NY sits in a sweet spot of the North Country with easy reach to dozens of destinations: Lake Placid is about 90 miles (roughly 2 hours), the Thousand Islands at Alexandria Bay is about 60 miles, Saratoga Springs is roughly 150 miles, and Niagara Falls is around 260 miles. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, with most including 100 to 150 free miles per night and additional miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each. RV rental with unlimited mileage does exist on the platform, so use the mileage filter or message hosts directly. Pro tip: ask about a flat 'package' mileage rate for a multi-day RV road trip from Madrid into the Adirondacks.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region7Where are the best campgrounds near Madrid, NY?
You're spoiled for choice within 30 minutes of Madrid. Coles Creek State Park in Waddington offers riverside sites on the St. Lawrence with electric hookups and a swimming beach. Robert Moses State Park in Massena has wooded and waterfront sites with full amenities and bike trails to the Eisenhower Lock visitor center. Jacques Cartier State Park near Morristown is another scenic St. Lawrence option about an hour west. For something more remote, Cranberry Lake Campground in the Adirondacks (about 70 miles south) offers lakeside sites managed by NY DEC. Pro tip: Coles Creek's riverside loops have some of the best sunset views over the St. Lawrence.
parks.ny.gov/parks/colescreek/details.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Madrid for an RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping Madrid is late May through early October, when daytime highs climb from the mid-60s°F in May to the upper 70s and low 80s°F in July and August, then ease into crisp 60s°F with brilliant foliage in late September. July offers the warmest swimming at Coles Creek, while late September delivers world-class fall colors along the St. Lawrence Seaway with far fewer crowds. Winters here are genuinely snowy and cold (lows often below 10°F), so most local campgrounds run from May through mid-October. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak Adirondack foliage and pleasant afternoons.
weather.gov/btv/Are winter RV rentals available in Madrid?
Winter RV rental in Madrid, NY is possible but limited, and it's best treated as a snowy adventure rather than a casual getaway. The North Country sees heavy lake-effect snow and overnight lows that regularly dip below zero, so most local campgrounds close from mid-October through April. A handful of RVezy hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces; filter by RV type and message hosts to confirm winter readiness. Pro tip: pair a winterized travel trailer with a stationary stay at a year-round private park or driveway hookup, and use it as a basecamp for cross-country skiing in the Adirondacks.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingI'm first time renting an RV. What support will I get?
First time renting an RV in Madrid? You're going to be fine. Every RVezy booking starts with an in-person walkthrough where your host shows you how to operate the slide-outs, water pump, propane, generator, leveling system, and waste tanks, and answers every 'wait, how does this work?' question. Hosts are local owners who genuinely want you to succeed, and most send a written checklist or short video ahead of time too. You also get 24/7 roadside assistance and RVezy customer support before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first North Country trip, they drive much like a large van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire near Madrid?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Madrid through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 37, a dead battery at Robert Moses State Park, or a lockout at a Potsdam fuel stop is just a phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing across St. Lawrence County and the broader North Country. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or RVezy messaging for quick troubleshooting. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's tire pressure and propane tank levels before leaving the driveway so any service tech can help you faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Madrid RV rental into Canada?
Madrid is just 15 minutes from the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge, so a Canada crossing is tempting, and on many RVezy listings it's allowed. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host's permission and insurance coverage, so message the owner before booking to confirm and get written approval inside RVezy. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage doesn't extend there. You'll need a valid passport (or enhanced license/NEXUS), and pets need up-to-date rabies certificates. Pro tip: a quick day trip to Upper Canada Village or Ottawa (about 90 minutes from Madrid) makes a memorable add-on to an RV road trip from Madrid.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiativeWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel budget will feel painless. Class B campervans around Madrid typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs average 6 to 9 mpg, while a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer usually gets 10 to 14 mpg. Gas prices in St. Lawrence County tend to run a touch above the national average, so for a 200-mile loop in a Class C you might budget $70 to $100 in fuel. Many rigs in motorhome rental Madrid run on regular unleaded. Pro tip: fill up in Massena or Potsdam where prices often beat the smaller stations along Route 345.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Madrid?
For peak summer weekends at popular spots like Coles Creek and Robert Moses State Park, book your site 4 to 6 months ahead, since New York State Parks open reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica. Midweek and shoulder-season nights are often available just a week or two out. NY DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks (like Cranberry Lake) use the same Reserve America system. Pro tip: reserve your site first, then book your RV rental Madrid on RVezy and ask the host about delivery straight to your reserved loop, no towing required.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Madrid, NY?
Driving an RV around Madrid is refreshingly easy: this is rural St. Lawrence County, with wide, flat two-lane highways like Route 345 and Route 37 connecting Madrid to Massena, Potsdam, and Ogdensburg. There's almost no urban traffic and overpasses on the main roads comfortably clear standard RV heights of 11 to 13 feet. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, occasional farm equipment in spring and fall, and lake-effect snow squalls from November through March. Cell coverage is solid along major routes but thins inside the Adirondack Park. Pro tip: download offline maps before heading south toward Cranberry Lake for your North Country RV trip.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Madrid?
You'll find solid amenities at the main parks. Coles Creek State Park offers electric hookups, a centralized dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, a swimming beach, and a boat launch. Robert Moses State Park has electric sites, a dump station, showers, and the bike path to the Eisenhower Lock visitor center. Many private parks in the area also offer full hookups with 30/50 amp service. For dumping and water between trips, Massena and Waddington both have public services near their marinas. Pro tip: ask your RVezy host to top off the fresh tank before delivery so you can skip the fill line on busy Friday afternoons.
parks.ny.gov/parks/colescreek/details.aspxWhat features and amenities come with a typical Madrid RV rental?
Expect to feel right at home. Most RV rentals in Madrid, NY come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (typical sleeps 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, a propane furnace, and seatbelts at all designated travel seats. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, and outdoor camp chairs. WiFi and onboard generators are common on Class C and Class A listings. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6+' for family RV trip Madrid options and message your host about adding a starter kit with linens and kitchen basics.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Madrid make customization simple. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generators ($20 to $40 per day), bike racks, kayak roof mounts, propane fire pits, and pet kits, all visible on the listing page. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Madrid, Norfolk, Massena, or Potsdam, and many hosts also offer delivery within a 30 to 60 mile radius. Mileage policies are set per listing, with 100 to 150 free miles per night being most common. Pro tip: if you want a one-way drop-off for an RV road trip from Madrid toward Lake Placid, message the host directly, some are open to creative arrangements.
dmv.ny.gov/registration/register-recreational-vehicleHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, and handled entirely through RVezy: you pay with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and the funds are held until your trip starts so the host doesn't get paid early. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) and released after the trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough with photos at pickup and return, dump tanks if required, and refuel to the agreed level. Pro tip: keep all receipts from your campervan rental Madrid trip in one folder, just in case.
