Camping near Montauk, New York
Montauk sits at the eastern tip of Long Island's South Fork, roughly 122 miles from Manhattan via Route 27. The area combines Atlantic Ocean beach, freshwater ponds, and coastal woodland, and it is bracketed by several state parks including Montauk Point, Camp Hero, Shadmoor, and Hither Hills.
Oceanfront camping in Montauk itself is concentrated at Hither Hills State Park, whose 189-site campground sits on the Atlantic Ocean between Amagansett and Montauk and stretches along a two-mile sandy beach with direct access for swimming, surfing, and fishing. RV travelers looking beyond the South Fork often cross Long Island Sound by ferry from Orient Point to reach additional campgrounds in eastern Connecticut and coastal Rhode Island, including Sun Outdoors Mystic, Mystic KOA Holiday, Rocky Neck State Park, and the specialty beach sites at East Beach State Park.
Expect a mix of state-park campgrounds with limited or no hookups and private RV resorts with full utilities. Booking windows and stay-length rules vary by operator, so plan the reservation strategy before choosing a route.
Things to do around Montauk
The Montauk Point Lighthouse anchors the eastern tip and pairs well with the bluff trails at Camp Hero and Shadmoor. Ditch Plains draws surfers of all levels, and charter boats run out of Montauk Harbor for striped bass, bluefish, and offshore trips. The Walking Dunes of Napeague Harbor sit on the eastern boundary of Hither Hills and form a short loop through shifting sand dunes that slowly bury the neighboring forest.
Families traveling with an RV can mix beach days at Hither Hills with tide-pooling and bike paths. West of Montauk, day trips reach East Hampton village, Sag Harbor, and the wineries of the North Fork. For travelers routing through Connecticut, Mystic Seaport, the Mystic Aquarium, and the Niantic shoreline near Rocky Neck State Park add rainy-day options.

Camping in the Montauk area is strictly seasonal. Hither Hills State Park typically opens in mid-April and closes in late November, with peak season running mid-June through mid-September under 7-night reservation minimums and 2-night minimums in the off-peak shoulders. Connecticut's Rocky Neck State Park runs a shorter window, with a camping season that begins in May and ends in early September, and its 160 wooded and open sites book heavily on summer weekends.
July and August bring the warmest ocean temperatures and the largest crowds, along with the highest booking pressure across the region. Late May, June, and September are strong shoulder windows for RV travelers who want ocean access without the 7-night lockup at Hither Hills, though nights can be cool and Atlantic fog is common.
October adds fall color inland and quieter beaches, but many state and private campgrounds begin winterizing. Winter camping is not offered at the state-park campgrounds discussed here.
How to book campgrounds near Montauk
New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica. Reservations at Hither Hills can be made up to 9 months in advance, same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, and bookings can be made online or by phone through the ReserveAmerica Call Center. During peak season, only one 7-night reservation is allowed per name, address, email, or phone number at Hither Hills, and stays run Sunday to Sunday or Friday/Saturday to the following weekend in designated loops.
Connecticut and Rhode Island state parks use their own ReserveAmerica portals. Rocky Neck reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 11 months in advance; East Beach in Charlestown accepts reservations up to 12 months in advance. Private resorts such as Sun Outdoors Mystic and Mystic KOA Holiday book directly through their own websites.
What to expect on-site
Montauk-area state-park campgrounds skew rustic. At Hither Hills, sites are back-in style with equipment length limits that vary by loop, four comfort stations provide hot showers and flush toilets, and additional facilities include a dump station, camp store, playground, and access to a 40-acre freshwater lake. Pets are not permitted, and campfires are prohibited during high season while off-season fires must be contained in a metal container raised six inches off the ground.
Across the Sound, Rocky Neck offers 160 wooded and open sites with picnic tables and fire rings, no utility hookups, and a dump station near the entrance. East Beach in Rhode Island is a specialty barrier-beach campground: all camping units must be self-contained and 4-wheel drive, and tow trailers and fifth wheels are not permitted. Private RV parks like Sun Outdoors Mystic and Mystic KOA Holiday offer full hookups, laundry, pools, and cabin rentals.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Montauk, NY
How much does an RV rental in Montauk typically cost?
RV rental in Montauk typically ranges from about $95 to $250 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes generally run $200 to $450 per night. Summer weekends in July and August are the priciest because Montauk is peak Hamptons season, so booking a shoulder-season trip in late May, June, or September can drop nightly rates significantly. For a cheap RV rental in Montauk, filter for travel trailers with delivery included and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Tip: midweek pickups on Monday or Tuesday often beat Friday rates on the same rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montauk%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Montauk?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New York, including Montauk. There's no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license required for any of the motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and upload your license through the platform for a quick ID check during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit, which you can usually get from your local auto association for under $25. Once that's done, you're cleared to cruise straight out to Montauk Point Lighthouse.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseWhat protection is included with my Montauk RV rental?
Every RV rental in Montauk through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the surf at Ditch Plains instead of worrying about what-ifs. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle during your trip. You choose your level of coverage during the booking process (not the host), so you can pick the option that fits your comfort level and budget. Tip: if you're a first-time renter heading out on a Long Island RV trip, the higher-tier plan often pays for itself in stress relief alone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Montauk RV booking?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Montauk dates with confidence. If something comes up later, refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel. You'll see the full details during checkout and in your RVezy account. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy provides a refund or travel credit. Tip: book early for July and August since Montauk fills up fast, knowing the grace period has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Montauk RV trip?
Yes, and Montauk is one of the most dog-friendly corners of New York. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Montauk, and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (some with a small cleaning fee). Once you're here, dogs are allowed on Montauk's ocean beaches outside peak summer hours, and trails at Camp Hero State Park and Hither Woods Preserve are leashed-dog friendly year-round. Gin Beach and Navy Beach are also popular dog spots in the off-season. Tip: pack a freshwater rinse jug because Atlantic salt is rough on paws and coats.
parks.ny.gov/parks/campheroCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Montauk?
Yes, RV delivery in Montauk is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig down the Long Island Expressway. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Hither Hills State Park or a private property you've arranged. They'll level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through everything from the propane stove to the awning before they leave. Tip: ask about delivery when messaging the host before booking, since some include it free within a certain radius of Montauk village while others charge a flat fee.
parks.ny.gov/parks/hitherhillsHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically travel from Montauk?
Most Montauk RV rental hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for road-trippers. From Montauk, you have great range without big daily miles: Greenport and the North Fork wineries are about 35 miles by road and ferry, the Hamptons villages of East Hampton and Sag Harbor are 20 to 30 miles, Sayville (for Fire Island ferries) is around 75 miles west, and NYC is roughly 120 miles. Tip: if you're planning a multi-stop RV road trip from Montauk through the North Fork and back, message the host and ask about a custom mileage package before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montauk%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds for RV camping in Montauk?
You have great options for RV camping in Montauk. Hither Hills State Park is the standout, with oceanfront sites right on the Atlantic and a famously competitive booking process. Montauk Point KOA Holiday offers full hookups, a pool, and easy access to the lighthouse. Cedar Point County Park in nearby East Hampton has bay-front sites about 25 minutes from Montauk village, and Shinnecock East County Park in Southampton is another oceanfront option about 40 minutes west. All four book up fast for summer. Tip: Hither Hills uses a rolling reservation window, so set a calendar reminder well in advance of your target date.
parks.ny.gov/parks/hitherhills/details.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Montauk in an RV?
Montauk's sweet spot runs from late May through mid-October, but the smartest travelers target June and September. Summer highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit with cool ocean breezes thanks to Montauk's peninsula geography, while winters dip into the 30s and 40s with occasional snow. July and August are gorgeous but crowded and pricey; June offers warm water and quieter beaches; September has the best surf and lingering festival energy. Tip: book a shoulder-season Montauk RV trip and you'll have Ditch Plains practically to yourself at sunrise.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Montauk?
You're going to be totally fine, and Montauk is actually a great spot for first time renting an RV. Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering driving, hookups, slides, waste, and propane, so you're never left guessing. Montauk Highway (Route 27) is the main road out east, and once you're past Amagansett it gets quieter and the speed limit drops. There's no city-style traffic chaos once you're east of Southampton. Pro tip: if Long Island Expressway traffic worries you, book a host who offers RV delivery in Montauk and let them handle the highway miles while you drive out in your own car.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every Montauk RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Old Montauk Highway or your generator quits at Hither Hills, help is one phone call away. Your host is also your direct line for questions about how things work, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave home and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and plate so you have it handy if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Montauk RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, most hosts allow interstate travel, which makes Montauk a fantastic launch point. Popular routes include heading north into Connecticut and Rhode Island via the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point (about 45 miles from Montauk), running up to Cape Cod (roughly 220 miles), or down the coast to the Jersey Shore through NYC. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so confirm before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Tip: the Orient Point to New London ferry takes RVs and saves you hours of driving if you're New England-bound.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Montauk?
Plan smart and you won't be surprised at the pump. Campervans and small travel trailers typically get 15 to 20 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. Long Island gas prices tend to sit above the national average, and Montauk itself only has a couple of stations, so fuel up in Amagansett or East Hampton where prices are friendlier. For a typical 4-day Montauk RV trip with a Class C, budget around $150 to $250 in fuel. Tip: fill up before you reach Montauk village since prices there are usually higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Montauk?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Hither Hills State Park opens reservations on a rolling window through ReserveAmerica, and summer oceanfront sites are typically gone within minutes of the window opening. Montauk Point KOA and Cedar Point County Park also fill quickly for July and August weekends, so aim to book three to six months out for peak summer. Off-season (April, May, late September, October) you can often grab a site two to three weeks ahead. Tip: create your ReserveAmerica account in advance with payment info saved so you're not fumbling when the booking window opens for that ocean-view Hither Hills site.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are driving conditions like getting to and around Montauk?
Driving out to Montauk is straightforward but timing matters. Route 27 (Montauk Highway) is the only road in and out east of the Shinnecock Canal, and summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings see legendary backups (locals call it the Trade Parade). Leave NYC before 10:00 a.m. on Friday or after 8:00 p.m. and you'll glide through. The roads themselves are flat, well-paved, and easy to drive even in a large motorhome. Watch for low tree canopies in some Hamptons village centers (clearances around 11 feet in spots). Pro tip: use the back roads through Sag Harbor and North Haven on busy weekends, or plan a Tuesday-to-Saturday trip to skip the worst traffic entirely.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at Montauk campgrounds?
You'll find a great mix. Hither Hills State Park offers electric and water hookups at most sites, hot showers, a dump station, a camp store, and direct beach access (no sewer hookups at sites, but the dump station handles it). Montauk Point KOA has full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a pool, and propane refills onsite. Cedar Point County Park has more rustic sites with potable water fill stations and a dump station near the entrance. For dumping and filling water mid-trip, the KOA and Hither Hills are your best bets. Pro tip: top off freshwater before heading to Hither Hills since the fill station can get a line on Saturday mornings.
parks.ny.gov/parks/hitherhills/details.aspxWhat's actually inside a typical Montauk RV rental?
Most rentals come fully equipped so you can roll straight to the beach. Expect a real bed (often two or three sleeping areas), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with AC and furnace, seatbelts for travel, and house batteries for off-grid power. Many Montauk-area motorhome rentals also include a generator, outdoor awning, beach chairs, a propane grill, and sometimes a TV or onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. A campervan rental in Montauk tends to be more minimalist but perfect for surf trips to Ditch Plains. Tip: ask the host for a beach-gear add-on list. Many include boogie boards, coolers, and SUPs for a small fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montauk%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Montauk offer plenty of useful extras. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, paddleboards, generators (if not included), and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home base on Long Island, but RV delivery in Montauk is widely offered, with many hosts delivering free within a set radius and charging per-mile beyond that. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily caps of 100 to 150 miles common and unlimited mileage options available from select hosts. Tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package for a true turnkey experience. You arrive, the RV is ready, and you start your trip at the beach.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montauk%2C%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the trip assuming no damage or policy issues. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. To keep things smooth, do a thorough pre-trip walkaround with the host, take time-stamped photos and a quick video, and return the RV clean, refueled, and with empty waste tanks. Tip: use the same card for booking and the deposit hold to avoid release delays from your bank.
