Camping near North Haven, New York
North Haven sits on a small peninsula between Sag Harbor and Shelter Island on the eastern end of Long Island's South Fork. The village itself has no public campground, so RV travelers base themselves at parks on the North Fork, elsewhere on the South Fork, or across Long Island Sound in coastal Connecticut, then reach North Haven by road or ferry.
The closest full-service option is Eastern Long Island Kampground on the North Fork, reachable via the Shelter Island ferries or the North Fork road route. Farther east on the South Fork, Hither Hills State Park sits on the Atlantic Ocean between Amagansett and Montauk, with a 189-site campground stretching along a two-mile sandy beach.
Across the Sound in Connecticut, Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park offer shoreline camping, and Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA provides a private-park alternative with full hookups. The Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London connects these Connecticut options directly to the North Fork.
Things to do around North Haven
North Haven's setting on Shelter Island Sound puts boating, kayaking, and beach days at the center of most itineraries. The Sag Harbor waterfront, a short drive south, has a working harbor, whaling-era architecture, and restaurants. The South Ferry connects North Haven to Shelter Island for cycling loops and hikes through the Mashomack Preserve.
Day trips reach the vineyards and farm stands of the North Fork, the ocean beaches of the Hamptons, and Montauk Point at the island's eastern tip. Hither Hills State Park offers a sandy ocean beach, sport fishing, playing fields, bridle paths, and hiking, nature, biking, and cross-country ski trails. Across the Sound, Rocky Neck and Hammonasset add Long Island Sound swimming beaches and boardwalks.

The East End camping season is tightly seasonal. Hither Hills typically operates from mid-April through late November, and other state-park campgrounds on both sides of the Sound follow a similar spring-to-late-fall window. Winter camping options in the area are extremely limited.
Peak season at Hither Hills runs mid-June through mid-September with 7-night reservation minimums, while off-peak allows 2-night minimums. Summer weekends fill months ahead across the Hamptons and North Fork, and traffic on Route 27 through the South Fork slows sharply on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.
Late spring and early fall are the easier windows for RV travel. Days remain mild, ocean water stays swimmable into September, and shoulder-season availability improves. Nights can be cool near the water even in June, so plan bedding accordingly.
How to book campgrounds near North Haven
New York state-park campgrounds, including Hither Hills, use the ReserveAmerica system. Reservations open 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Only one 7-night reservation per name, address, email, or phone number is allowed during peak season, which runs from mid-June to mid-September.
Connecticut state parks, including Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park, also book through ReserveAmerica, with a maximum stay of 21 consecutive days. Private parks such as Eastern Long Island Kampground and Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA take direct bookings through their own websites and the KOA network.
What to expect at area campgrounds
State-park sites in this region are generally rustic by RV-park standards. At Hither Hills, sites are back-in with equipment length limits of 20 to 30 feet depending on site, and four comfort stations provide hot showers and flush toilets. Each site has a picnic table, one RV plus one tent or two tents are allowed, and two cars are permitted per site. Pets are not permitted at Hither Hills.
Expect narrower roads, low-clearance trees, and tight turns approaching the South Fork parks. Big-rig travelers should confirm site length limits and hookup type before booking. Private parks like Eastern Long Island Kampground and Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA are the more predictable choice for full hookups, pull-through sites, and pet-friendly stays.

New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. You do need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork run-around. Visiting from abroad? Absolutely, and the Hamptons are made for it. Once you are here, the Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge in Noyack has scenic trails just minutes from North Haven where leashed dogs are welcome on designated areas, and Cedar Point County Park welcomes leashed dogs in its camping loops. Pro tip: pack a portable water bowl, the bay-side sun reflects hot off the sand in July.
fws.gov/refuge/elizabeth-a-mortonCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or rental house in North Haven?
Yes, RV delivery in North Haven is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campground, a Sag Harbor rental driveway, or a private property on Shelter Island via the South Ferry, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Just toggle the Delivery filter when you search. Delivery fees vary by distance, but for a stationary Hamptons RV trip it removes the driving stress. Show up, unpack, and you are camping.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106554-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from North Haven?
Plenty far, and the mileage policy is set by each host right on their listing, so you can shop for what fits your plan. Some North Haven hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops. From North Haven you are about 20 miles to Montauk Point, 35 miles to Greenport wine country via the North and South Ferries through Shelter Island, 95 miles back to NYC, and around 110 miles to Mystic, CT via the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point. Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-state RV road trip from North Haven, filter for unlimited miles upfront so you can wander freely.
northferry.com/Where are the best campgrounds near North Haven, NY?
You have some of Long Island's best beachfront campgrounds within a short drive. Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton (about 15 minutes from North Haven) offers wooded and waterfront sites overlooking Gardiners Bay. Hither Hills State Park in Montauk has oceanfront RV sites with hookups and is famous for sunrise surf-casting. Shinnecock East County Park in Southampton puts you right on the dunes. A bit further, Wildwood State Park in Wading River offers full-amenity RV camping in a forested setting. Pro tip: Suffolk County parks require a Green Key card for residents, while non-residents can book directly at higher rates, so reserve early.
parks.ny.gov/parks/122/details.aspxWhen is the best time for an RV trip in North Haven?
The sweet spot for a North Haven RV trip is late May through mid-October, with June and September being insider favorites. Summer highs typically sit in the upper 70s to mid 80s F, ocean water warms into the low 70s by August, and bay breezes keep evenings comfortable. July and August are peak Hamptons season, so expect higher rates and traffic on Route 114. Spring brings blooming farm stands, while fall delivers harvest festivals, pumpkin picking on the North Fork, and crisp days perfect for campfires. Winter rentals are limited but possible. Pro tip: book the week after Labor Day, beaches stay warm, crowds thin out, and rates drop sharply.
weather.gov/okx/I am first time renting an RV. Will I be okay in North Haven?
You will do great, and you are far from alone. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water hookups, propane, and dump procedures, so nothing is a mystery. North Haven itself is a small, calm village with quiet roads, making it a forgiving spot for first-timers to get comfortable behind the wheel before heading out. You can message your host directly through the listing with any pre-trip questions, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: book a campervan or Class B for your first Hamptons rental, they drive like a large van and park easily in village lots.
northhavenny.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Noyac Road or a dead battery at Cedar Point is one phone call away from help. For anything mechanical or systems-related such as the AC, generator, or fridge, your host is your first call since they know their RV best and most respond within minutes. If you need additional support, the RVezy customer team is available throughout your trip. Pro tip: save your host's number and the RVezy support line in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN plate so you have it handy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my North Haven RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and interstate trips are very doable from North Haven. Travel into Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and up into Maine is allowed on most RVezy rentals, just confirm with your host before booking since they set the travel area. Canada is permitted with many hosts as well, you will want to discuss it upfront so insurance documentation is in order. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals. A popular interstate route from here is the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London, CT, which saves hours of driving on the way to New England. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Hamptons RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest cost after the rental itself, so let's make it predictable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches typically 6 to 10 MPG. Gas in Suffolk County tends to run above the national average, with Sag Harbor and East Hampton stations on the higher end. Pro tip: fill up in Riverhead or Bridgehampton before heading east on Route 27, prices drop noticeably the further west you go. For a typical 4-day Hamptons RV trip based around North Haven with a few day-drives to Montauk and Greenport, budget $120 to $250 in fuel depending on RV class.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near North Haven?
Book early and you'll have your pick. New York State Parks (including Hither Hills and Wildwood) open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekend sites for Montauk literally sell out the morning they release. Suffolk County parks like Cedar Point and Shinnecock East open bookings in January for the summer season. For July and August, aim to reserve by February or March. Shoulder-season trips (May, September, October) often have availability just two to four weeks out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the exact release date and log in 5 minutes early, the oceanfront loop at Hither Hills is the most sought-after RV camping near North Haven, NY for a reason.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around North Haven?
North Haven itself is easy, you will cross the short North Haven Bridge into Sag Harbor and from there onto Route 114 toward East Hampton or Bridgehampton. Roads are well-maintained, but a few local quirks to know: Route 27 (Montauk Highway) gets bumper-to-bumper on summer Fridays heading east and Sundays heading west, so plan around those windows. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on Noyac Road. If you are nervous about Hamptons traffic, choosing RV delivery in North Haven is the easy answer. Pro tip: drive east on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for the smoothest ride to Montauk.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region10What hookups and dump stations will I find at local campgrounds?
Most established RV camping options near North Haven have what you need. Cedar Point County Park offers electric hookups at many sites plus a dump station on-site. Hither Hills State Park has electric and water at RV loops, with a sanitary dump station near the entrance. Shinnecock East provides basic electric. Wildwood State Park has 30-amp electric and a dump station. Pro tip: top off fresh water before crossing onto Shelter Island, options are limited on the island itself, and always carry a 25-foot drinking-water hose plus a basic sewer kit (good hosts often include both).

Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, while others advertise unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you are road-tripping the North Fork wineries. Pickup is usually at the host's home or an agreed meeting point. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen kit and your first Hamptons RV rental feels effortless.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Haven%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure, you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown on each listing before you book) to cover any potential damage or extra cleaning. The deposit is released after your trip ends and the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days. To keep things smooth: do a thorough walkaround photo session at pickup and drop-off, return the RV clean and with tanks dumped per the host's instructions, and refuel to the level noted in your agreement. Pro tip: keep your pickup photos in a dedicated phone album, it is your best friend at drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from North Haven?
You are sitting on one of the best RV launch points in the Northeast. Top picks for an RV road trip from North Haven: Montauk Point State Park (about 25 miles east) for the lighthouse and surf beaches; Greenport and the North Fork wineries (about 35 miles via Shelter Island ferries) for vineyards like Wolffer and Bedell Cellars; Mystic, CT (about 110 miles including the Orient Point ferry) for the seaport and aquarium; Newport, RI (around 165 miles) for Gilded Age mansions; and Cape Cod (about 200 miles) for a full New England loop. Pro tip: book the Cross Sound Ferry in advance for any RV over 20 feet, summer crossings fill up fast and walk-on availability is not guaranteed.
