Campgrounds and RV parks near North Sea, NY

Beach days anchor most trips. Ocean swimming, surfcasting for striped bass, and long walks on undeveloped sand are the core draws along the South Fork, while the calmer bay beaches near North Sea suit families with small children. Hither Hills also contains the Walking Dunes of Napeague Harbor and woodlands of Russian olive, oak, shad, and pine, which give hikers something beyond shoreline trails. Off the beach, renters typically fold in a Montauk Point Lighthouse visit, a fishing charter out of Montauk or Shinnecock, and a day loop through North Fork farm stands and wineries. Southampton Village, minutes from North Sea, adds shops, restaurants, and the Parrish Art Museum. Wildwood and Hammonasset add nature-center programming and shoreline biking that work well for slower-paced days.

The Long Island camping calendar is short and tightly regulated. Hither Hills operates roughly from mid-April through late November, with peak season running mid-June through mid-September and seven-night reservation minimums during that window. Wildwood and most other New York State Parks follow a similar spring-to-fall pattern. Private parks like Eastern Long Island Kampground typically open earlier and close later than the state sites. Summer is the busy season by a wide margin. July and August bring warm ocean water, full campgrounds, and heavy weekend traffic along Route 27 into the Hamptons and Montauk. Shoulder months, late May, early June, and September, offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Late-season RV travellers should watch the tropical outlook. The western Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August and September, and coastal parks occasionally close or evacuate ahead of storms. Winter camping is not available at the state parks around North Sea.

Sites at the region's most popular state parks lean rustic and close together. Sites at Hither Hills sit in a fairly open, flat layout rather than secluded in woods, with minimal privacy between neighbours, and there are no built-in fire pits at individual sites. Sites are back-in style with equipment length limits that vary by loop, so larger Class A rigs and long fifth wheels may not fit. Campfires are prohibited during high season; in low season, fires must be contained in metal containers raised six inches off the ground. Pets are not permitted at Hither Hills, a rule renters travelling with dogs should confirm at any state park before booking. Cell service is generally reliable near North Sea and thinner out toward Montauk. Grocery runs are easiest in Southampton or Riverhead.
