Camping near Orient, New York
Orient sits at the eastern tip of Long Island's North Fork, a narrow peninsula with Long Island Sound to the north and Gardiners Bay to the south. The village is small and residential, so most RV camping is a short drive west toward Greenport, or across Long Island Sound via ferry to the Connecticut shore. Options include coastal state parks and private campgrounds on the eastern end of Long Island, with access to both Long Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean beaches.
The closest full-service RV base is Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport, roughly ten miles west of Orient. Farther southwest on the South Fork, Hither Hills State Park in Montauk offers beachfront sites on the Atlantic. Aces High RV Park adds another private-park option on the East End.
Across Long Island Sound, the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point connects to New London, opening up Rocky Neck State Park and Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA in Connecticut as practical add-on stops for a two-state loop trip.
Things to do around Orient
Orient Beach State Park anchors the immediate area. The park has 45,000 feet of frontage on Gardiner's Bay and a rare maritime forest with red cedar, black-jack oak trees and prickly-pear cactus, and visitors can swim in the bay, fish from shore, go kayaking, windsurfing, and stand-up paddle boarding, hike or bike, or walk a nature trail. Four lighthouses are visible from the park: Orient Point, Plum Island, Long Beach Bar, and Cedar Island.
Greenport, a short drive west, is a walkable harbor village with restaurants, a carousel, and the Shelter Island ferry. The surrounding North Fork is known for its vineyards, farm stands, and small seaside villages, with easy access to Long Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean, and Peconic Bay, making winery visits and beach days easy day trips from any nearby campground.

Peak RV season on the North Fork runs late spring through early fall. Most private campgrounds in the area operate seasonally, with peak demand from May through September, and reservations are essential during summer weekends when facilities reach capacity. Eastern Long Island Kampground typically operates from spring through late October, which is representative of private parks in the region.
Summer brings warm, humid days and reliable beach weather, but also heavy traffic on Route 25 and the fullest campgrounds. Late June through August books out well in advance, especially around July 4 and Labor Day weekends.
Spring and fall are quieter and better for wildlife viewing. Fall brings mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and strong migratory bird activity along salt marshes and beaches, and Orient Beach is recognized as an Audubon Important Bird Area. Winter camping options are limited: Orient Beach State Park is open year-round for day use, but most nearby campgrounds close by early November and reopen in spring.
How to book campgrounds near Orient
New York state park campsites and cabins are booked through the ReserveAmerica system operated for New York State Parks. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, with the booking window opening at 8:00 AM Monday through Friday and 9:00 AM Saturday and Sunday from mid-March through Labor Day, so returning campers often set alarms for opening day to lock in summer weekends at parks such as Hither Hills State Park.
Connecticut state parks, including Rocky Neck State Park, use the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Camping reservations are accepted 11 months in advance until the day prior to arrival. Private parks such as Eastern Long Island Kampground, Aces High RV Park, and Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
For summer stays, book several months out. Ferry space on the Cross Sound Ferry between Orient Point and New London should be reserved separately if a rig is crossing to Connecticut campgrounds.
What to expect on the ground
The North Fork is agricultural and low-key rather than resort-style. Roads are two-lane, shoulders are narrow in spots, and summer traffic backs up on Route 25 approaching Greenport and the Orient Point ferry terminal. Large rigs should plan arrival outside Friday afternoon and Sunday evening peaks.
Hookups vary by property. Private parks like Eastern Long Island Kampground offer electric, water, and sewer service along with laundry, Wi-Fi, and family amenities. State park sites in the region tend to be more rustic; for example, Rocky Neck State Park has no hookups, though bathhouses and a dump station are provided.
Beach access on the North Fork is largely resident-restricted, though Orient Beach State Park is open to non-residents. Bring a park pass or plan to pay the day-use fee, and expect the lot to fill early on hot weekends.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Orient, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Orient, NY?
An RV rental in Orient, NY is often a smart alternative to a North Fork hotel on peak summer weekends. On RVezy you will typically see campervans starting around $125 to $200 per night, Class C motorhomes between $200 and $325, and travel trailers from $95 to $200, depending on size, age, and season. For a cheap RV rental in Orient, look at midweek dates in late May, early June, or September when wineries are still open and rates drop noticeably. Pro tip: filter for travel trailers paired with a host who offers RV delivery in Orient. You save on fuel, skip towing, and your rig is ready when you arrive at the campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Orient%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Orient, NY?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Orient, NY. New York does not require a special RV license or commercial driver's license (CDL) for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and you will verify your identity right inside the RVezy platform when you book, no DMV trip required. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. With the paperwork sorted, you are free to roll straight onto Route 25 toward the wineries.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Orient protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Orient includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward Orient Point with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens, like a parking ding in Greenport village or a flat tire on the Long Island Expressway. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking. Many North Fork renters pick a higher tier for the long weekend and forget about it once the beach chairs are out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Orient RV rental?
Booking your North Fork getaway is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, and it is consistent across the platform. Your refund depends on how far out you cancel and circumstances like severe weather, which is worth knowing on Long Island during hurricane season (June through November). You do not need to dig through individual listings hunting for fine print. Pro tip: if a nor'easter is in the forecast for your Orient trip, message RVezy support early. The team handles weather-related changes regularly and can walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Orient, NY?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Orient is easy to find on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to instantly narrow your search to hosts who welcome dogs and sometimes cats. Once you are on the road, your pup will love the North Fork: Orient Beach State Park allows leashed dogs on the Long Beach sand spit outside the swimming area, and Inlet Pond County Park in Greenport has shaded trails perfect for hot afternoons. Many North Fork wineries are dog-welcoming on outdoor patios. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes so check-in is smooth.
parks.ny.gov/parks/106/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Orient?
Yes, RV delivery in Orient is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you are new to driving a big rig down Route 25 in summer traffic. Many RVezy hosts on the North Fork will deliver the RV directly to Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport or a private driveway, then set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. You just show up with your cooler and groceries from the Orient Country Store. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts about fees, which on the North Fork typically scale by distance from their home base.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038104694-What-is-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive on an RV trip from Orient?
You can cover a lot of ground from Orient, and most RVezy hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance, with some offering RV rentals with unlimited mileage. Popular routes from Orient include the Cross Sound Ferry to New London, Connecticut (about 80 minutes on the ferry), the Hamptons via the South Ferry through Shelter Island (about 1 hour), Montauk Point (around 2 hours via the ferries), Hither Hills State Park (about 2 hours), and Manhattan (roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, traffic depending). Pro tip: confirm the mileage policy on the listing page before you book. If you are planning a long Orient RV trip up the Connecticut coast, an unlimited-mileage listing pays for itself fast.
longislandferry.com/Where can I camp with an RV near Orient, NY?
You have excellent options for RV camping near Orient and the surrounding North Fork. Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport (about 8 miles west) is the closest full-hookup park, with sites, a pool, and walking distance to the Greenport Village ferry. Wildwood State Park in Wading River (about 45 minutes west) has hundreds of wooded sites and bluff trails to the Long Island Sound. Cedar Point County Park near East Hampton is another nearby choice if you ferry across Shelter Island. Pro tip: Orient Beach State Park itself is day-use only, no overnight camping, so plan to base at one of the above and day-trip in for the beach and lighthouses.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to take an RV trip to Orient, NY?
The sweet spot for an Orient, NY RV trip is mid-May through mid-October, with September and early October being the local insider's favorite. Summer (late June to August) brings 75 to 85 degree Fahrenheit days, warm Gardiners Bay swimming, and packed wineries, but also peak ferry traffic and higher rates. Spring (May to early June) is cool, quiet, and gorgeous on Village Lane. Fall harvest season is magic: 60 to 75 degree days, the North Fork wine harvest in full swing, and far fewer crowds. Winter rentals are possible too. Pro tip: book Columbus Day weekend at least three months out. It is the busiest fall weekend on the North Fork.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Orient a good place to start?
Yes, Orient is one of the friendliest spots on the East Coast for first time renting an RV. Roads on the North Fork are flat, well-maintained, and slow-paced (Route 25 has a 35 to 45 mph limit through most villages), which is far easier than tackling Manhattan or the Long Island Expressway. Every RVezy host gives you an in-person orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, propane, slides, hookups, and tank dumping. You can also message your host anytime mid-trip through the RVezy app. Pro tip: choose a Class B campervan or small travel trailer for your first Orient rental. They drive like an SUV, fit easily into Greenport's compact parking lots, and ferry across Shelter Island without stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I have a breakdown or issue on the road near Orient?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on the Long Island Expressway, a dead battery at the Cross Sound Ferry terminal, or a propane issue at Eastern Long Island Kampground, help is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions about the rig's quirks. For medical or police emergencies, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital is right in Greenport, about 8 miles from Orient village. Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number in your phone before you leave the pickup spot. Cell service is solid across the North Fork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Orient RV rental into Connecticut or other states?
Yes, interstate trips are common from Orient and a big reason people rent here. The Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London, Connecticut takes about 80 minutes and opens up Mystic, Newport, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod, all classic RV road trip from Orient itineraries. You are also free to drive west into New Jersey or south to the Jersey Shore. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there, and Canada trips may be allowed with host approval. Pro tip: book your Cross Sound Ferry reservation for the RV size category (length plus tow) weeks in advance during summer. Vehicle space sells out fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage should I expect, and what does fuel cost on the North Fork?
Budget realistically and you will be fine. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically runs 10 to 14 mpg. Gas on the North Fork tends to run higher than the New York state average, so fill up in Riverhead before heading east when you can. For a typical 3-night Orient RV trip with day trips to Greenport, Shelter Island, and Montauk, plan on $80 to $200 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: stations on Main Road in Southold are usually better priced than what you will find further east toward Orient Point.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Orient?
Book early, this is one of the busiest stretches of New York for camping. New York State Parks open reservations 9 months out through ReserveAmerica, and Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends at Wildwood State Park typically sell out within days of the booking window opening. For private parks like Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much more forgiving and often available a few weeks out. Pro tip: set up a free cancellation alert tool for the state parks. Spots open up regularly within 2 weeks of arrival.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the roads like for driving an RV around Orient?
Driving conditions around Orient are about as forgiving as RV roads get in New York. Route 25 (Main Road) is the spine of the North Fork, mostly two lanes, flat, and gently winding through farmland and villages with 35 to 45 mph speed limits. There are no mountain grades, no tunnels, and no low bridges between Riverhead and Orient Point. Summer Friday and Sunday traffic on the Long Island Expressway (I-495) between exits 70 and 73 is the real challenge, so plan to drive midday or evening. Pro tip: avoid the South Ferry to Shelter Island during the morning beach rush on summer weekends. Take it on the evening return loop and you will roll right on.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at North Fork campgrounds?
You will be well taken care of. Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), a dump station, hot showers, laundry, and a swimming pool. Wildwood State Park has electric and water at most RV loops with a centralized dump station. For filling fresh water mid-trip, the dump and fill station at Eastern Long Island Kampground is typically open to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and both 30-amp and 50-amp adapters. Some older North Fork sites still have 30-amp only pedestals.
parks.ny.gov/parks/82/details.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Orient?
You will find well-equipped rigs ready for the North Fork. Most motorhome rentals in Orient sleep 4 to 8, with a real queen or king bed, a galley kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with hot shower, roof air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. WiFi is rarely built in, but Verizon and AT&T LTE both work well across the North Fork if you tether your phone. Campervan rental Orient options like Sprinter-based Class Bs sleep 2 to 4 and slip easily into any Greenport parking spot. Pro tip: check the listing photos for a built-in awning, summer afternoons on Gardiners Bay demand shade.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Orient%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Orient RV rental?
RVezy hosts offer plenty of useful extras to customize your North Fork trip. Common add-ons in Orient include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($30 to $60), outdoor chairs and tables ($20 to $40), bikes (perfect for the flat Greenport-to-Orient ride), kayaks or paddleboards for Gardiners Bay, and generator use for off-grid stays. Many hosts offer RV delivery and setup, with fees scaled by distance. Pickup is usually between 12 and 4 pm with drop-off by 11 am, and mileage policies typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per day, with unlimited mileage available on some listings. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a bike add-on. You will never have to move the rig and Orient village is bike-perfect.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Orient%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled inside RVezy, no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers needed. When you book your rent an RV in Orient reservation, you will pay the trip total by credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held by RVezy (not the host) shortly before your trip and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. Choosing your protection plan level at checkout reduces your out-of-pocket exposure if something happens. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off with timestamps visible. It is the single best way to keep your North Fork trip's deposit return fast and drama-free.
