Phoenix camping overview
Phoenix is a small village in Oswego County, New York, on the Oswego River roughly halfway between Syracuse and Lake Ontario. The location puts RV travellers within short driving distance of Oneida Lake to the south, the Salmon River corridor to the north, and Lake Ontario beaches to the northwest, giving one base camp access to inland lakes, big-water fishing, and rural Central New York.
Private RV parks near the village include Pleasant Lake RV Park, Sunset Park Campground Inc., and J and J Campgrounds, plus two family-oriented resorts operating as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, one of which is the Mexico, NY location toward the Salmon River. These properties typically offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and family amenities suited to RV rental trips.
Oswego County holds dozens of public, private, and New York State campgrounds along the Lake Ontario shoreline, so travellers based in Phoenix can supplement private parks with state park options such as Selkirk Shores and Fair Haven Beach within a short drive.
Things to do around Phoenix
Fishing drives much of the trip planning here. Oneida Lake is known as the Walleye Capital of New York State, and other varieties of fish found in the lake include large and smallmouth bass, Northern pike, and yellow perch. The Salmon River near Mexico and Pulaski draws salmon and steelhead anglers in fall and spring, and the Oswego River running through Phoenix itself offers walleye and bass access.
Beyond fishing, Lake Ontario beaches at Fair Haven Beach State Park and Selkirk Shores State Park are within an hour's drive, and Syracuse is close enough for a day trip to the zoo, museums, and the Destiny USA mall. Family resorts such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort run themed weekends, pools, and scheduled activities that keep kids busy on rainy afternoons.

The core RV camping season in Central New York runs from mid-May through mid-to-late October. State park campgrounds in Oswego County, including Selkirk Shores and Fair Haven Beach, operate on a seasonal schedule that opens in mid-May and closes in mid-to-late October, with some loops closing earlier than others. Private parks near Phoenix often open a few weeks earlier and stay open slightly later, but hookups and amenities can be reduced in shoulder season.
Summer weekends between the July 4 holiday and Labor Day are the busiest, and lakefront sites at state parks book out months in advance. Late spring and early fall offer thinner crowds, cooler nights, and better site selection. Fall also brings the salmon and steelhead run on the Salmon River, which drives a second wave of demand at parks toward Pulaski and Mexico.
Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario is significant from late November into March, and most RV parks in the area are closed or on limited service during those months.

How to book campgrounds near Phoenix
For New York state parks in the area, including Fair Haven Beach and Selkirk Shores, reservations are made through the ReserveAmerica system, either online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance on a rolling window, with sites opening at 8 a.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. on weekends during the March 15 to Labor Day booking rush. Same-day reservations for campsites are accepted online until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Private parks near Phoenix, including Pleasant Lake RV Park, Sunset Park Campground Inc., J and J Campgrounds, and the two Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort locations, book directly through each property's own website or by phone. Holiday weekends often carry a multi-night minimum, so lock in dates as early as possible.
What to expect on-site
Private RV parks near Phoenix are family-oriented and typically include pull-through and back-in sites with electric, water, and often sewer hookups, plus laundry, showers, camp stores, and playgrounds. The Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort properties add pools, themed events, and scheduled kids' activities, which can be a good match for parents renting an RV for the first time.
State park campgrounds in the region tend to be more rustic. Selkirk Shores, for example, has campsites without water hook-ups, though a fresh-water filling station and a dump station are available on-site. Plan to arrive with tanks topped off and dump on the way out.
Black flies and mosquitoes are common in late May and June near wooded and waterfront sites, and secure food storage is advised on any DEC-managed lands.

A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Phoenix, NY. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) confirms that a standard Class D license covers personal-use recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less, which includes virtually every RV on the RVezy platform. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and no special RV endorsement required. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identification through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you arrive and you're set to hit the Oswego Canal.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs the RV rental protected if something goes wrong on my trip?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can rent an RV in Phoenix, NY with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier during checkout, not the host. Refund outcomes depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, which matters in upstate New York where lake-effect snow can affect spring and fall trips. Hosts do not set their own cancellation terms, RVezy handles this centrally. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Phoenix-area RVs along the Oswego Canal, knowing you have a grace window if your plans shift.
