Campgrounds and RV parks near Potsdam, NY

Water is the main draw. Coles Creek State Park sits on Lake St. Lawrence and supports boating, fishing, and swimming, with a marina, boat launch, and dockage on site. Higley Flow State Park offers a sandy beach on the Raquette River reservoir, canoeing, fishing, and the Beaver Pond Nature Trail with interpretive signs on the habitats it passes through. Families often pair a campground stay with a visit to Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, a living-history museum depicting a 19th-century village. The Raquette and St. Regis river corridors near Potsdam are popular for paddling, and the surrounding St. Lawrence County countryside supports cycling on quiet rural roads. In colder months, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing take over on area trails.

The RV season in this part of New York is short and clearly defined. State park campgrounds typically operate from mid to late spring through early fall, and most private and cross-border parks follow a similar window. The Parks of the St. Lawrence properties in Ontario, including Upper Canada Campground, generally open for the season in the spring and close in the fall. Summer is peak season. Warm, humid days and comfortable evenings make July and August the busiest weeks at Higley Flow and Coles Creek, and weekend sites at both state parks fill well in advance. Late spring and early fall offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fishing, though water temperatures for swimming stay chilly into June, and black flies can be an issue in late spring. Winter changes the picture entirely. Snow cover is deep and reliable, campgrounds close for RV use, and activity shifts to ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing on park trail systems. RV renters should confirm dates directly with each campground before booking a shoulder-season trip.

State park sites in the Potsdam area lean rustic but well maintained. Higley Flow has spacious, wooded sites separated by pine trees, with several loops offering electric hookups, along with a dump station, showers, a playground, and a sandy beach on the Raquette River reservoir. Full water and sewer hookups at individual sites are not standard, so RV renters should plan on filling and dumping at the provided stations. Coles Creek is larger and more open. The park has 228 campsites, including 147 with electric hookups for RVs, plus boat launches, dockage, a marina, showers, a playground, and a swimming beach. Waterfront sites are popular and go first. Private parks near town typically add extras such as laundry, Wi-Fi, and a small store, useful for families on longer stays.
