Camping near Putnam Lake, New York
Putnam Lake sits in eastern Putnam County, close to the Connecticut border and roughly an hour north of New York City. The area is part of the Hudson Highlands, a landscape of forested ridges, small lakes, and short mountains that makes it a practical base for RV travellers heading into Fahnestock State Park, the Hudson Highlands, or the Litchfield Hills across the state line.
Overnight options mix a private lakeside campground with several state park campgrounds in New York and Connecticut. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc offers full-hookup RV sites on a private lake in Hopewell Junction, while Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits within Fahnestock's 15,000 acres on the New York side. Note that the Fahnestock campground is temporarily closed while a new bathhouse is built, so travelers should confirm status before planning around it.
Across the state line, Lake Waramaug State Park Campground and Macedonia Brook State Park round out the nearby options, each within about an hour's drive. Kettletown State Park is also in the region, but its campground is closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons following flood damage.
Things to do around Putnam Lake
Fahnestock State Park covers roughly 15,000 acres across Putnam and Dutchess counties and includes Canopus Lake, which has a sandy swimming beach, seasonal boat and kayak rentals, and fishing for bass, pickerel, perch, and trout. A section of the Appalachian Trail crosses the park, and Fahnestock Winter Park offers about 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
Across the border, Macedonia Brook State Park has a Blue Trail that crosses Cobble Mountain and other peaks, offering views of New York's Catskills and Taconic Mountains. Lake Waramaug offers swimming, car-top boat launching, and shoreline campsites overlooking Connecticut's second-largest natural lake.
Sylvan Lake Beach Park adds a private swimming beach, non-motorized boating including canoes and kayaks, a playground, horseshoes, volleyball, and open fields for ball games.

The Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock is closed while the state builds a new bathhouse. Day use, hiking, boating, and the Canopus Lake beach continue on their normal seasonal schedules, and the Group Wilderness Campground remains available.
Summer weekends and holidays fill early at every open park in this area, especially the lakeside sites at Lake Waramaug and Sylvan Lake. Fall foliage draws heavy weekend traffic through late September and October, and Lake Waramaug is especially popular with photographers when the fall colors reflect on the water. How to book
Both New York and Connecticut state park campsites are booked through ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267 for New York and 1-877-668-CAMP for Connecticut. Macedonia Brook does not accept walk-ins at any time, so an advance reservation is required. Lake Waramaug fills quickly for summer weekends and foliage dates. Sylvan Lake Beach Park is privately owned and booked directly with the campground office by phone or through its website, and it is primarily a seasonal destination, so early booking is advisable for extended stays.
What to expect on site
