The camping season around Rochester runs from roughly mid-May through mid-October. Letchworth State Park opens its 270 electric sites in mid-May and closes them in mid-October, and private parks such as Twilight on the Erie RV Resort and Creek-N-Wood RV Park and Campground follow a similar window. Private Finger Lakes campgrounds like Conesus Lake Campground and Timberline Lake Park Camping generally open in early May and close in mid to late October. Summer, from late June through August, brings warm days in the upper 70s to low 80s and peak demand, with holiday weekends filling months in advance. September delivers milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and the start of fall foliage across the Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley. Winter is cold and snowy, with heavy lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario. Most private RV parks close and state park campground loops shut down, though a handful of state facilities remain open for cabins and winter recreation such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

State park campgrounds around Rochester typically offer electric hookups, water spigots, restrooms with hot showers, and dump stations, but not individual sewer connections at each site. Letchworth's 270 sites all include 30 or 50 amp electric service, with pets restricted to designated loops. Vehicle use fees apply at most New York State Parks. Private RV resorts in the area generally provide full hookups, laundry, pools or swim areas, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Sites vary from wooded and shaded to open pull-throughs suited to larger rigs. Cell coverage is reliable near the city and along major highways but can weaken in the Genesee Valley and southern Finger Lakes hills, so downloading maps ahead of arrival helps.
