Campgrounds and RV parks near Shelter Island Heights, NY

Shelter Island Heights sits between the North and South Forks of eastern Long Island, reachable only by ferry from Greenport or North Haven. The island itself has no public campgrounds, so RV travelers typically base themselves on the North Fork or across Long Island Sound in coastal Connecticut, then ferry over for day trips. The closest option on the North Fork is Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport, a short drive from the Shelter Island ferry landing. It offers hookups, a pool, and easy access to Greenport village, wineries, and North Fork beaches. Across the Sound, Connecticut's shoreline state parks add more choices within reasonable driving distance of the Cross Sound Ferry at Orient Point. Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park both offer large campgrounds directly on Long Island Sound, while Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA and Riverdale Farm CampSites provide private-park alternatives with fuller hookups.

Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park, are booked through Reserve America. Reservations open up to eleven months in advance, and summer weekends at Hammonasset in particular can fill quickly once the booking window opens. Walk-ins are sometimes possible midweek or in shoulder season by contacting the camp office directly. Eastern Long Island Kampground, Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA, and Riverdale Farm CampSites are private parks and take reservations directly through their own websites, KOA.com, or by phone. Book summer holiday weekends several months out, especially for full-hookup pull-through sites suitable for larger RVs.
