Campgrounds near St. Bonaventure
St. Bonaventure sits in the Southern Tier of western New York, in Cattaraugus County between Olean and the village of Allegany. The area is anchored by Allegany State Park, the largest state park in New York at roughly 65,000 acres, which draws RV travelers year-round with camping, hiking, lakes, and cabin rentals.
RV renters have a mix of options within a short drive. Private parks in the surrounding countryside cover the full-hookup and family-resort side of the market, with Lake Lane Campground, Riverhurst Park Campground, Shamrock Pines Campground, Camp Emerald Acres, and Triple R Camping Resort and Trailer Sales among the closest choices. State-park sites at Allegany's Red House and Quaker areas cover the more rustic, forested experience.
Olean provides the nearest full-service grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops. The Allegheny River Valley Trail runs from campus through Olean and Allegany, giving campers a paved biking and walking route close to town.
Things to do near St. Bonaventure
Allegany State Park is the main draw. The Red House Area centers on Red House Lake, five miles of paved bike paths, the Stone Tower, a fire tower, and Bridal Falls, while the Quaker Area offers Quaker Lake and Science Lake, Bear Caves, and Thunder Rocks. Both areas have sand beaches with lifeguarded swimming in summer.
Beyond the park, kayakers and canoers use the Allegheny River, and the Allegheny River Valley Trail gives a flat, paved loop through Olean and Allegany. Day trips reach Rock City Park, Griffis Sculpture Park, Ellicottville, and the Amish Trail. Across the Pennsylvania line, the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk, Kinzua Dam, and Allegheny National Forest add more hiking and water options within an hour of camp.

December - February
30° / 19°F 58 mmCold and snowy; most tent and trailer sites closed
Allegany State Park tent and trailer campsites are typically open from mid-to-late May until late October, while cottages and some cabins stay open year-round. Peak season for cabins and cottages runs from the fourth Saturday in June to the fourth Saturday in August, when a seven or fourteen night minimum stay applies. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends fill early at both state and private parks.
Spring is wet and cool, with April the rainiest month around Olean. Summer is comfortable rather than hot, with July averages in the upper 70s Fahrenheit, and it draws the heaviest booking pressure. Fall brings strong leaf color across the un-glaciated hills, and the park is a well-known foliage destination.
Winter closes most tent and trailer camping, but Allegany stays active for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing at the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area, and stays in winterized cabins and cottages.
How to book
Sites and cabins inside Allegany State Park are booked through the New York State Parks reservation system, operated by ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone. Reservations open up to nine months in advance and generally must be made at least one day ahead of arrival. A camping party may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the party must leave the facility for 48 hours before registering again.
Permits are non-transferable and only the primary occupant listed on the reservation is allowed to check in. Private parks near St. Bonaventure, including Lake Lane Campground, Riverhurst Park Campground, Shamrock Pines Campground, Camp Emerald Acres, and Triple R Camping Resort and Trailer Sales, take reservations directly with the operator. For summer weekends and foliage dates, book several months out.
What to expect on the ground
Expect forested, hilly terrain rather than open prairie. Allegany State Park is bear country: coolers, garbage, and food must not be left unattended, and a wildlife policy is provided at check-in. Many state-park sites are wooded and shaded, with fire rings and picnic tables standard and shower buildings within the loops.
Water service inside Allegany uses shared spigots on the loops for tank fill only, so campers cannot keep a hose connected. Cell service can be spotty in the park interior, so trip planning should be done before arrival.
The park has two developed areas, Red House and Quaker, and a valid reservation covers one vehicle at the tollbooth. Salamanca, about 15 minutes from the Quaker entrance, is the nearest resupply town, with a wider selection in Olean or in Bradford, Pennsylvania.

parks.ny.gov/parks/136/details.aspxWhen is the best time to plan a St. Bonaventure RV trip?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. June through early September brings warm days in the 75 to 85 degree range and cool nights around 55 to 60, perfect for swimming at Red House Lake and hiking the Allegany backcountry. But the real local secret is late September through mid-October, when the Allegheny foothills explode into red, orange, and gold and daytime temps hover in the 60s. Winters here are snowy and cold, often dipping into the teens, so most campgrounds close by late October. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental St. Bonaventure for the first two weekends of October to catch peak foliage with smaller crowds.
weather.gov/buf/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in St. Bonaventure?
You'll be just fine, and you're not alone. Most renters on RVezy are first-timers, and St. Bonaventure is actually a great place to learn. The roads around Olean, Allegany, and Route 17 (Southern Tier Expressway) are wide, gently curved, and far less stressful than city driving. If you're nervous, choose a Class B campervan rental St. Bonaventure or a smaller travel trailer to start. Ohio, West Virginia, and the rest of New York are also fair game. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: carry your booking confirmation, ID, and passport for the Canadian border, and ask your host for the registration paperwork in advance.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much will fuel cost for an RV trip from St. Bonaventure?
Budget-friendly news: gas prices in Cattaraugus County are typically below the New York state average, often by 20 to 40 cents per gallon thanks to lower local taxes near the Pennsylvania border. For a 300-mile loop through Allegany State Park, Letchworth, and back, expect $80 to $180 in fuel depending on your rig. Pro tip: top up just across the state line in Bradford, PA, where diesel and gas can be noticeably cheaper, making it easy to find a cheap RV rental St. Bonaventure trip even cheaper to run.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near St. Bonaventure?
For peace of mind, book early. New York State Parks, including Allegany State Park, open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends in the Red House and Quaker Areas often book within minutes. Private RV parks like Triple R Camping Resort and the Kinzua area campgrounds usually fill 1 to 3 months ahead for summer. For shoulder season trips in May or late September, 2 to 4 weeks notice is often enough. Pro tip: if Allegany is fully booked, set up a cancellation alert. Sites open up daily as plans change.

The terrain rolls gently through the Allegheny foothills, with a few longer grades on Route 219 heading toward Ellicottville and Holiday Valley. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and from November through April expect lake-effect snow squalls blowing in from Lake Erie, which is why most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: avoid narrow back roads in the village of Allegany during St. Bonaventure University events when traffic spikes, and stick to Route 17 instead.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near St. Bonaventure?

Private parks like Triple R Camping Resort offer full hookups including sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. Dump stations are clearly marked at both Allegany areas and are free for registered campers. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before entering Allegany State Park, since not every site has individual water hookups, and bring a 25-foot drinking-safe hose plus a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter just in case your rig is larger.
