Campgrounds near Star Lake, New York
Star Lake sits in the western Adirondacks in St. Lawrence County, surrounded by state forest, quiet lakes, and the Raquette River watershed. The hamlet works as a base for RV travelers who want lake access, hiking, and paddling without the crowds of the High Peaks region.
Camping options mix New York State Parks, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) campgrounds, and private resorts. Higley Flow State Park is nestled among the Adirondack foothills on the picturesque Raquette River, with hilly, heavily wooded terrain and a sandy beach on the reservoir. Old Forge Camping Resort offers cabins, cottages, RV sites, and tent sites on a well-maintained property. Horseshoe Lake - DEC provides a more primitive Adirondack experience, and Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey sits west of the region for travelers arriving from I-81. Manestay Stables adds a horse-friendly option in the surrounding countryside.
Star Lake itself sits at roughly 1,447 feet elevation, so nights run cool even in midsummer. Plan RV utility needs accordingly.
Things to do around Star Lake
Water dominates the itinerary. Star Lake itself is a spring-fed paddling lake with a car-top launch, and Cranberry Lake, a short drive east, opens up dozens of miles of shoreline and remote island campsites for paddlers.
Higley Flow State Park adds structured recreation close to an RV site. Activities include boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, and picnicking, and winter ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. The park has a beach, boat launch sites, a picnic area with pavilions, tables, and a playground, and a nature trail. The Beaver Pond Nature Trail has interpretive signs that describe the six distinct habitats through which the trail passes.
Old Forge Camping Resort places families close to Enchanted Forest Water Safari and the shops and restaurants along Main Street in Old Forge, with easy access to snowmobile and ATV trails in the off-season.

The camping calendar in this corner of the Adirondacks is short and weather driven. Most developed campgrounds operate from mid-May through mid-October, with some closing after Labor Day weekend. State park and DEC sites typically follow that window, while a few private resorts stretch the shoulder seasons.
Spring arrives late. Snow can linger in shaded pockets into April, and black flies typically emerge in May and persist through early June. Head nets and permethrin-treated clothing are standard gear through early summer. July and August are peak season, when weekend sites at Higley Flow book out weeks ahead. Fall foliage in late September and early October is a second peak, with cooler nights and fewer bugs.
Winter is a serious season here. Snowmobile trails link the Old Forge area to a wide regional network, and a few private resorts host winter seasonal guests, but most state and DEC campgrounds close through the snow months.
How to book campgrounds near Star Lake
New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds use ReserveAmerica. For Higley Flow State Park, same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. The standard New York State Parks booking window opens nine months ahead of arrival, so summer weekends and foliage weekends should be booked as early as the window opens.
Private resorts run their own systems. Old Forge Camping Resort takes reservations directly through its website, and Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey books through the KOA site. Manestay Stables should be contacted directly to confirm availability, RV access, and any horse-boarding arrangements.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Star Lake tend to be wooded, hilly, and quiet. At Higley Flow, spacious campsites are separated from neighbors by pine trees, and well-spaced, accessible campsites have blacktop driveways, picnic tables, and fireplaces, with dumping stations and showers on the property. There is 24-hour security at the park. Cell service is spotty once off Route 3 and Route 56, so download maps before arriving.
Pet rules are consistent across state facilities: pets must be leashed and under control, and limits per site apply. Confirm current rules with the specific campground before arrival.
Winter temperatures often drop well below zero Fahrenheit, while summer brings mild days and cool nights. Pack layers, a reliable heater for shoulder-season RV trips, and insect protection from May through June.
