Campgrounds and RV parks near Wainscott, NY

Ocean beaches define the trip. Hither Hills fronts a long stretch of Atlantic sand for swimming, surfcasting, and beachcombing, with a 40-acre freshwater lake behind the dunes for paddling. Wainscott itself has town beaches on the ocean, and nearby Montauk adds a working harbor, lighthouse, and hiking at Camp Hero and Shadmoor state parks. On the North Fork, guests at Eastern Long Island Kampground can tour wineries, farm stands, and the waterfront village of Greenport. Across the Sound, Rocky Neck State Park spans 700 acres and features a crescent-shaped, stone-free sand beach with calm, clear water ideal for swimming, while Hammonasset Beach offers a two-mile sandy stretch, a large campground, and a nature preserve on Long Island Sound.

The camping window on Long Island's South Fork runs roughly from mid-spring through late fall. Hither Hills is open for the 2026 season from April 10 through November 22. Eastern Long Island Kampground operates roughly from May through early November. The Connecticut state parks used as overflow run shorter seasons: Hammonasset typically opens in mid-May and closes after Columbus Day, and Rocky Neck runs from mid-May through late September, with 2026 dates of May 15 to September 25 at noon. July and August are peak. Ocean water warms enough for comfortable swimming, ferry lines back up on weekends, and Hamptons traffic on Route 27 slows to a crawl on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. During peak season, mid-June through mid-September, only 7-night reservations are accepted at Hither Hills, limited to one reservation per household. Off-peak season allows 2-night minimum stays. Shoulder months bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier bookings. Late September through October is popular for beach walks, fishing, and North Fork harvest season.

Sites at Hither Hills are close together and open rather than heavily wooded, with easy access to the beach and comfort stations offering hot showers and flush toilets. Campfires are prohibited during high season; in low season, fires must be contained in raised metal containers off the ground. Pets are not permitted at Hither Hills, and pets are strictly prohibited in the Rocky Neck campground. Hammonasset has open, grassy sites, so RV renters should arrive with full fresh-water tanks and use the dump station on the way out. Eastern Long Island Kampground and the Niantic KOA offer full hookups, pools, and family amenities, better suited to first-time RV renters who want power and water at the site. Expect summer traffic on Route 27 and at the Orient Point ferry, and book ferry crossings for the RV in advance.
