Campgrounds and RV parks near Waterford, NY

Family activity clusters around the private resorts. Pirate's Cove Water Park at Adventure Bound Deer Run features waterslides and a large splash pad that keeps kids entertained, alongside heated swimming pools and a kiddie pool. Themed weekends run throughout the season, and the Adventure Bound Express Train is a signature attraction for younger campers. Outside the resort, the region supports quieter recreation. At Cherry Plain State Park, biking, boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, and picnicking are the most popular summer activities, and winter visitors can cross-country ski. Anglers fish Black River Pond for bass, bullheads, and pickerel. Saratoga Springs, the Erie Canalway Trail through Waterford, and the Hudson River waterfront round out day-trip options.

The Waterford area follows a classic upstate New York humid continental pattern. Summers are warm while winters are cold and bring significant snowfall, and precipitation is spread relatively evenly through the year, with winter moisture often arriving as snow. Peak camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private resorts and the state park campground operate at full capacity. State park camping in this region is strictly seasonal. Cherry Plain State Park is open for day use and camping Memorial Day weekend through the last weekend in June on Fridays and weekends only, then runs daily from the last weekend in June through Labor Day, and the campground closes for the season the day after Labor Day. Private resorts have longer shoulder seasons: Adventure Bound Deer Run is open from mid-April through mid-October. Fall brings foliage color and cooler nights, which is a strong window for RVers who want lighter crowds. Winter closes campgrounds outright, though cross-country skiing and snowshoeing continue on trails inside Cherry Plain and the surrounding Capital District Wildlife Management Area.

Site character varies sharply between the private resorts and the state park. Adventure Bound Deer Run is a full-service family resort with hookups, pools, and organized activities, and reviewers note that site leveling may be an issue in some spots, so coming prepared with leveling equipment is advisable. Guests have also flagged inconsistent electrical service at some older sites, so verifying amp service at booking is worthwhile for larger rigs. Cherry Plain is a smaller, more rustic operation. The park has 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites available for overnight camping, with modern restrooms and showers on site. There is no guarded swimming at this location. Ticks are a known concern in the wooded Taconic terrain, so plan for repellent and daily checks.
