Campgrounds near Coal Grove, Ohio
Coal Grove is a small village in Lawrence County, Ohio, along the north bank of the Ohio River, directly across from Ashland, Kentucky. The village sits at the center of the Huntington-Ashland tri-state area, which puts RV travelers within easy reach of campgrounds in three states: southeastern Ohio, northeastern Kentucky, and western West Virginia. Bridges over the Ohio River connect the village to Ashland, making cross-river camping options practical for a base trip.
Most RV-friendly options sit within a 30-minute drive. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, just south in Argillite, Kentucky, is the closest full-service park with big-rig pull-throughs and full hookups. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, about 20 miles south in Greenup County, adds a lakefront state-park option with a lodge, marina, and mixed hookup levels.
Smaller private and marina-based campgrounds round out the area, including Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and The Falls Campground, giving travelers a mix of river, lake, and quiet rural settings within an hour of Coal Grove.
Things to do near Coal Grove
The Ohio River corridor drives most on-the-water activity. Boating and fishing are common at marina-based sites like Holiday Point Marina and Campground, while Greenbo Lake State Resort Park offers a 300-acre lake with a boat dock and marina, a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide, and forested hiking trails around the shoreline.
Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday can use the swimming pool, miniature golf, on-site fishing pond, and children's playgrounds, then day-trip into Ashland or Huntington for restaurants, shopping, and riverfront attractions.
Further afield, Wayne National Forest lands in Lawrence County add miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback trails, and Carter Caves State Resort Park in Kentucky is within a day-trip radius for guided cave tours and natural arches.

Peak RV season in the Coal Grove area runs from late April through mid-October. Summer is warm and humid, with daytime highs typically in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill fastest, especially at lakefront and state-park sites, so booking six to ten weeks ahead is advisable during this window.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel. Spring brings wildflowers along forested trails and steady rainfall, with May typically the wettest month. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong hardwood color across the Ohio and Kentucky hills through mid- to late October.
Winter is the slow season. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday stays open year-round, but Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water and other resources at campgrounds during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly before booking a cold-weather stay at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park.
How to book campgrounds near Coal Grove
Reservation systems differ by operator. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday is not currently taking internet reservations, so travelers should call the campground directly to book sites or cabins. The park is open year-round with full-hookup, 50-amp pull-through sites for large RVs with slides plus heated and air-conditioned cabins.
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is booked through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system, powered by ReserveAmerica. Sites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance and must be booked at least one day ahead of arrival, with a one-night midweek minimum and a two-night minimum for Friday or Saturday arrivals during peak season.
Smaller private campgrounds such as Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and The Falls Campground generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites, so call ahead for holiday weekends.
What to expect on arrival
Most RV parks in the tri-state area are easy to reach off Interstate 64, US 52, or US 23. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday sits three-quarters of a mile off I-64 at exit 179 via Eastpark Drive, with level sites, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour laundry, and a campground store. Staff can point travelers toward day-trip routes across Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia.
At Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, sites range from primitive to electric-and-water to full hookup, and some sites have steep grades that are not suitable for larger rigs, so review site notes carefully at booking. Kentucky State Parks also prohibit importing firewood from outside the state.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain, humid summer nights, and mixed cell coverage in the hollows. Pack a leveling kit, bug spray, and rain gear.

After that, your refund depends on how far you are from your trip start date and certain extenuating circumstances. Because southern Ohio weather can swing in spring and fall, it is helpful that the policy is consistent across every listing. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump valves, and you can message or call them anytime during your trip. If you are nervous, start with a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan, both drive much like a large truck or van. Tip: take your first short loop on US-52 along the Ohio River, flat, scenic, and forgiving.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Coal Grove RV trip is straightforward. Campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get around 10 to 14 MPG, larger Class A rigs run 7 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on the tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Gas in southern Ohio tends to be close to or slightly below the national average. Kentucky State Parks across the river use Reserve America. For shoulder season in late April or early October, 2 to 3 weeks ahead is usually enough. recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Coal Grove?
Driving an RV around Coal Grove is relaxed. US-52 along the Ohio River is flat, scenic, and one of the most RV-friendly stretches in southern Ohio. State Route 141 heading north into Wayne National Forest gets curvier with some grades, but nothing intimidating for a Class C or travel trailer. Watch for occasional coal trucks on the rural routes and low-clearance railroad bridges in older parts of Ironton, so check your rig's height before you go. Winter can bring snow and ice on the hills, so a December trip is best on main roads only.

Iron Ridge at Lake Vesuvius offers electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, while Ashland KOA Holiday across the river has full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and a pool. Tip: top off your fresh water in Ironton before heading into the forest, hookups thin out fast once you are in the hills.
fs.usda.gov/wayneWhat is actually inside the RV I am renting?

Expect real beds (queen in most Class C motorhomes), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating with seatbelts, roof A/C, propane furnace, and often a TV. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coal%20Grove%2C%20OhioWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly when you book, with no cash or side-channel payments to the host. A security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, and it is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. Choosing a higher-tier protection plan at checkout can reduce your out-of-pocket exposure if damage occurs. Tip: do a quick video walkthrough with your host at both pickup and drop-off in Coal Grove, it is the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth and fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I find a cheap RV rental in Coal Grove?
A cheap RV rental in Coal Grove is absolutely doable, the region is one of the better value RV destinations in the Midwest. Sort by price low-to-high on RVezy and look at travel trailers (often $90 to $120 per night) instead of motorized rigs, then ask hosts about weekly or midweek discounts. Booking Sunday through Thursday, choosing a non-holiday weekend, or traveling in April, May, or late September will save you the most. Bundling delivery to a single campground like Lake Vesuvius also saves on fuel and mileage fees.
