Campgrounds near South Point, Ohio
South Point sits at the southern tip of Ohio where the Ohio River curves between Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The tri-state location puts RV travelers within roughly a half-hour drive of campgrounds in all three states, ranging from full-hookup private parks to state park lakefront sites and national forest campgrounds in the Appalachian foothills.
The closest booking options include Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday across the river in Argillite, Kentucky, and Beech Fork State Park south of Huntington, West Virginia. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday sits just off I-64 and offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, a swimming pool, mini golf, and a stocked fishing pond. Beech Fork State Park covers 3,144 acres around a 720-acre lake with four separate campgrounds and 275 campsites.
For smaller, quieter stays, The Falls Campground, Creekside Cabins and RV Park, and Little Bear Island Campground sit along creeks and rivers in nearby Kentucky and pair well with fishing and paddling. All three cater to RVs and tents within an easy drive of South Point.
Things to do near South Point
Water activities dominate the area. Beech Fork Lake supports fishing, kayaking, and pontoon or paddle-boat rentals from a park marina, plus a swimming pool complex and athletic fields including volleyball, tennis, basketball, and softball. Little Bear Island Campground offers direct river access for fishing and paddling.
On land, the Wayne National Forest Ironton Ranger District lies just north of South Point, with the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area offering hiking, a 143-acre lake, an archery trail, and a 46-mile horse trail system. The core RV season runs from mid-April through October. At Beech Fork State Park, Old Orchard Campground stays open year-round, Four Coves runs mid-April through mid-October, and Lakeview operates April through mid-November. Wayne National Forest campgrounds at Lake Vesuvius, Iron Ridge and Oak Hill, are scheduled to open in April and generally close in early January, with reduced services in the off-season.
Summer brings warm, humid days and the busiest bookings. July is typically the wettest month, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Weekends and holidays fill first at lakefront and full-hookup sites, so plan several weeks ahead.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable camping weather, with cool nights, lower humidity, and fall color through the Appalachian foothills in October. Winter camping is possible at year-round sites like Old Orchard, but expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced services at seasonal campgrounds.
How to book near South Point
Reservation systems vary by campground type. West Virginia state park sites, including Beech Fork, are booked through the state's online reservation system, by phone, or at the campground office, and can be reserved up to one year in advance. Beech Fork requires a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday, and a fourteen-night maximum stay applies.
Wayne National Forest campgrounds at Lake Vesuvius, including Iron Ridge and Oak Hill, are booked through Recreation.gov. Reservations must be made at least four days before arrival, and any unreserved sites inside that window are available first-come, first-served.
Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday takes reservations by phone through the campground directly. Little Bear Island Campground, The Falls Campground, and Creekside Cabins and RV Park are private parks and typically book directly by phone or through third-party platforms. Book lakefront and full-hookup sites well in advance for summer weekends.
What to expect on site
Site setups vary widely. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service and WiFi are standard at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, where sites are pull-through and big-rig friendly, with cable available at every site. Beech Fork's Old Orchard Campground offers full hookups and WiFi at park headquarters and Old Orchard, while Four Coves and Lakeview are 30-amp electric only with no water or sewer at individual sites.
Cell service and WiFi can be limited inside Beech Fork State Park, and access roads through the park hills can be rough. Wayne National Forest sites at Iron Ridge and Oak Hill provide electric hookups with flush toilets, showers, and a dump station, but no sewer at sites.
Expect wooded, hilly terrain across much of the region. Bring leveling blocks, insect repellent for summer, and plan to buy firewood locally, since moving firewood between areas is discouraged to prevent spreading pests.

Ohio gas prices in the South Point area are typically close to the national average and often slightly different from prices across the river in West Virginia or Kentucky, so it can pay to compare before crossing a bridge. Local tip: October weekends fill up fast thanks to fall color seekers, so if you're chasing leaves along the Hocking Hills loop, lock your site in by August.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around South Point and the Ohio River valley?
Driving around South Point is refreshingly low-stress for RVers. US-52 follows the Ohio River with gentle curves, wide shoulders, and minimal truck traffic compared to I-64 or I-77. The main thing to watch for is the rolling Appalachian foothills as you head north into Wayne National Forest, where grades can be steep on State Route 93 and State Route 233, so downshift early and use engine braking. Winter occasionally brings ice to bridges over the Ohio River, and summer afternoon thunderstorms can drop visibility quickly. Pro tip: avoid the bridges into Huntington during weekday rush hour (4 to 6 PM) and plan crossings for mid-morning or early afternoon for easier RV passage.
