Bear Rocks camping overview
Bear Rocks sits on the crest of Laurel Ridge in southwestern Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Laurel Highlands about an hour southeast of Pittsburgh. The area is defined by forested ridges, cool summer nights at elevation, and easy access to a cluster of state parks that draw RV travelers from across the Mid-Atlantic. The surrounding region spans Westmoreland, Fayette, and Somerset counties, and Bear Rocks itself lies within a short drive of all three.
RV travelers typically base themselves at private campgrounds along the US-30 and Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor, then day-trip into the surrounding parks. Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC, Donegal Campground, and Mountain Pines Campground are the closest options to Bear Rocks, with Fox Den Acres Campgrounds and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort a short drive west toward New Stanton and Mill Run respectively.
Ohiopyle State Park, Laurel Ridge State Park, and Laurel Hill State Park together offer thousands of acres of protected land, giving families a deep bench of hiking, paddling, and sightseeing options within a 30 to 45 minute radius of any campground base.
Things to do near Bear Rocks
Ohiopyle State Park is the anchor attraction, with whitewater on the Youghiogheny River, the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail, and Cucumber Falls. Laurel Ridge State Park is home to the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, a semi-wilderness route with day-hike segments accessible from several trailheads along the ridge.
Laurel Hill Lake is the summer hub at Laurel Hill State Park, which is surrounded by thousands of acres of state park and forest lands. The Jones Mill Run Dam and the Hemlock Trail Natural Area are two must-see destinations inside the park.
Architecture and history buffs can visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater at Bear Run Nature Reserve and nearby Kentuck Knob, plus the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville and Fort Necessity National Battlefield near Farmington.

The Laurel Highlands are a four-season destination, and the ridge elevation around Bear Rocks means noticeably cooler temperatures than Pittsburgh year-round. Spring wildflowers dot the forest floor in early April, followed by a vibrant green canopy as leaf-out completes in late April. Mountain laurel blooms in June, and rhododendron follows in late June and early July.
Summer is peak RV season, with families booking Laurel Hill State Park's lake beach and the private resorts. Weekends fill early, especially around the July 4 and Labor Day holidays. Fall color across the ridges typically peaks in mid-October, drawing another wave of foliage travelers.
Winter brings snow, cross-country skiing, and downhill runs at Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain. Laurel Hill State Park's campground operates seasonally from mid-April through mid-October, and many private campgrounds close between late October and mid-April, so winter RV travelers should confirm dates directly and plan for cold-weather hookups.

How to book campsites near Bear Rocks
Pennsylvania state park sites at Laurel Hill and Laurel Ridge are reserved through the state's central system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance and must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival, either online at the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday.
Private campgrounds such as Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC, Donegal Campground, Mountain Pines Campground, Fox Den Acres Campgrounds, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort are booked directly through each operator's website or phone line. Summer holiday weekends and fall foliage weekends sell out earliest, so lock in dates several months ahead when possible.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Bear Rocks and the surrounding ridge country are winding and can be steep. Larger Class A rigs and long travel trailers should stick to numbered state routes and campground-approved access roads rather than shortcuts across the ridge. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving home.
Black bears are active across the Laurel Highlands, so food and trash need to be stored securely. Pennsylvania restricts moving firewood from outside the state because it can spread invasive insects and diseases, so buy firewood locally. Most private campgrounds sell bundles on site.
Expect cool nights even in summer at ridge-top elevations, occasional afternoon thunderstorms, and quiet-hour rules that begin at 9 p.m. at Pennsylvania state park campgrounds.

You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Bear Rocks, PA on RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive into Forbes State Forest with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the level of protection that fits your trip, and the plan helps cover most damage to the vehicle so a chipped windshield from a backroad pebble near Route 381 won't ruin your week. This isn't traditional insurance, but it's substantial financial protection backed by a real support team. Hosts don't pick your coverage, you do. Pro tip: read each plan's highlights during booking so you can confidently relax around the campfire at Laurel Hill State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Bear Rocks RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not the host), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund details depend on how far out you cancel and whether something like severe weather or a natural disaster affects your trip, all common considerations in the Laurel Highlands where winter storms can roll across Laurel Ridge. If plans shift, you message RVezy support directly and they walk you through the options. Pro tip: book early for popular weekends like Fallingwater visits or Ohiopyle whitewater season, then refine your itinerary later, you have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Bear Rocks RV rental?
Absolutely, dogs love this corner of Pennsylvania. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Bear Rocks, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you're rolling, the Laurel Highlands is dog heaven: Ohiopyle State Park allows leashed dogs on most trails including the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail, Bear Run Nature Reserve permits leashed pups on its trail network, and Laurel Hill State Park has pet-friendly camping loops. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm breed or size details so your pet's spot at the campfire is locked in before you arrive.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Bear Rocks?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start a trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Bear Rocks and across the Laurel Highlands, meaning your motorhome rental arrives at the campground already leveled, hooked up, and ready for a walkthrough. Popular drop-off spots include Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground, Laurel Hill State Park, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Mill Run, just a few miles from Bear Rocks. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who travel to your site and their per-mile rate. This is gold for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot rig down winding Route 381. Pro tip: ask about a setup-and-teardown package, many hosts handle both.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/camping.htmlHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Bear Rocks?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) and many list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, perfect for a Bear Rocks RV trip that wanders the region. From Bear Rocks you're about 15 minutes to Ohiopyle, 25 minutes to Seven Springs, 35 minutes to Fallingwater, roughly 60 miles (about 90 minutes) to downtown Pittsburgh, and around 165 miles to Gettysburg. Heading west, Cleveland is roughly 170 miles. Check the mileage box on each listing before booking and add extra miles upfront, it's cheaper than paying overage at return. Pro tip: if you're planning the Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway loop, request unlimited miles for stress-free exploring.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bear%20Rocks%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat are the best campgrounds near Bear Rocks, PA?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Bear Rocks, PA include Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle State Park (226 sites with electric hookups, walking distance to the Youghiogheny River), Laurel Hill State Park Campground (264 sites, lakefront beach and stocked trout streams), Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Mill Run (full-hookup family resort with water park), Mountain Pines Campground in Champion (full hookups plus indoor pool), and Benner's Meadow Run near Farmington (large pull-through sites close to Fallingwater). All sit within a 25-minute drive of Bear Rocks. Pro tip: Pennsylvania State Park sites release on a rolling 11-month booking window, so set a calendar reminder for popular fall foliage weekends in October when sites vanish fast.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park/camping.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Bear Rocks for an RV trip?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time, and fall is the showstopper. May and June bring blooming mountain laurel (Pennsylvania's state flower) with daytime highs in the 65 to 78°F range, perfect for hiking Beam Rocks and Wolf Rocks. July and August warm up to 75 to 85°F, ideal for rafting the Youghiogheny. September cools back to the 70s with fewer crowds. The real magic is late September through mid-October when the Laurel Highlands hits peak foliage and ranks among USA Today's top 10 fall destinations in the country. Winters get cold (often 20 to 35°F with snow) but ski-trip RV camping near Bear Rocks at Seven Springs is a hidden gem. Pro tip: book your October dates by July.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-ridge-state-park/wildlife-watching.htmlI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be fine, and you won't be alone. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, propane, slide-outs, dump valves, and water hookups. You can message your host through the app any time during your trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. For first time renting an RV in the Laurel Highlands, choose a travel trailer or Class C in the 22 to 26 foot range, easy to handle on winding mountain roads like Route 711 and 381. Or skip the driving entirely and book a host who delivers. Pro tip: start with two nights at Laurel Hill State Park, a flat, paved, easy-access campground that's perfect for learning the ropes.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park.htmlWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Help is always a phone call away. Every RV rental in Bear Rocks includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. If something goes sideways on the Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway or a remote Forbes State Forest road, you call the number in your booking confirmation and a dispatcher coordinates service. You can also message your host directly through the app, most are local Westmoreland or Fayette County owners who know the nearest repair shop. Cell coverage is solid along Route 31, 711, and 381, with a few quiet pockets deeper in Forbes State Forest. Pro tip: screenshot your roadside contact info before leaving so you have it offline.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxCan I take my RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome. You can take your Bear Rocks RV rental on classic RV road trips from Bear Rocks across Pennsylvania and into neighboring states. Favorites include Ohiopyle and the Great Allegheny Passage (15 minutes), Pittsburgh (90 minutes), Gettysburg (2.5 hours), the Finger Lakes in New York (4 hours), and Washington DC (3.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be possible with host approval and a written agreement, just message the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: if you're aiming for a Niagara Falls add-on, confirm Canadian travel during the booking conversation so paperwork is squared away in advance.
pa.gov/agencies/dot.htmlWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan smart and you'll cruise comfortably. Class B campervans return roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A gas rigs 6 to 9 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). Pennsylvania gas prices typically sit a bit above the national average, so for a 300-mile Laurel Highlands loop in a Class C you're looking at roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Diesel pumps are easy to find along Interstate 70, the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76), and Route 30. Pro tip: top off in Somerset or Donegal where Turnpike-exit stations are cheaper than the tiny stops near Ohiopyle, and use GasBuddy for the lowest prices along Route 31.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Bear Rocks?
Earlier is better, especially for fall. Pennsylvania State Parks (Ohiopyle, Laurel Hill, Laurel Ridge) use a rolling 11-month reservation window through the official PA State Parks reservation system, and prime fall foliage weekends in October book out almost immediately when the window opens. For summer holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, aim for 4 to 6 months out. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Mill Run and Mountain Pines Campground also fill 2 to 4 months ahead for peak weekends. Mid-week sites and shoulder season (late April, early May, mid-September) are often available 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: Sunday-to-Thursday stays at Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle are easier to grab and noticeably quieter.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Bear Rocks?
Plan for scenic mountain driving with a few twists. Bear Rocks sits on the Laurel Ridge at roughly 2,700 feet, so expect curvy two-lane roads like PA Route 381 (the route to Fallingwater) and Route 711 with grades up to 8% in spots. The Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and Route 31 are wide, RV-friendly main arteries. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, fog in spring mornings along Laurel Hill Creek, and occasional black ice from November through March. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly over the ridge. Most RV rentals handle the terrain easily. Pro tip: avoid Route 381's switchbacks in a Class A over 32 feet, instead approach Bear Rocks from Donegal via Route 31 for a gentler, RV-friendly climb.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat facilities do campgrounds near Bear Rocks offer for RVs?
You'll find solid infrastructure across the Laurel Highlands. Most local campgrounds offer 30 and 50 amp electric, with water and sewer hookups at private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Mill Run, Mountain Pines, and Benner's Meadow Run. Pennsylvania State Parks (Ohiopyle's Kentuck, Laurel Hill) typically offer electric-only sites with shared water spigots and a central dump station, ideal for RV camping in Bear Rocks where hookup needs are simple. Potable water fill stations are available at every state park campground and most service stations along Route 31. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the mountains, expect cell-based hotspots to work best. Pro tip: dump tanks at Ohiopyle's dump station before driving home, the next convenient one is 40 miles out near Somerset.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ohiopyle-state-park/camping.htmlWhat's typically included inside an RV rental near Bear Rocks?
Most rentals arrive trip-ready. Expect a sleeping setup for 2 to 8 (queen bed, bunks, or convertible dinette), a kitchen with fridge, propane stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, plus an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and travel trailer rentals. Air conditioning and a furnace are standard, which matters in the Laurel Highlands where summer nights drop into the 50s and winter calls for the heater. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth speaker, outdoor chairs, and a generator for boondocking near Forbes State Forest. Each listing spells out exactly what's onboard. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and look for hosts who include linens and a kitchen kit, that saves a Walmart run before your campervan rental Bear Rocks adventure begins.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-ridge-state-park.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for?
You can customize your rental to match your trip. Popular add-ons from Bear Rocks-area hosts include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bedding and towel kits ($25 to $50), kitchen packages ($25 to $40), generators ($15 to $30 per day), bike racks, kayak racks, and Starlink Wi-Fi. Pickup is usually at the host's location in nearby towns like Mount Pleasant, Champion, Donegal, or Somerset, with delivery to campgrounds available for a per-mile fee. Most hosts allow check-in between 2 and 4 PM and return by 11 AM. Mileage policies vary from 100 miles per day to unlimited. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you message the host, many will discount a package deal for longer Laurel Highlands stays.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr.htmlHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Pennsylvania through RVezy, you pay the trip total upfront via credit card through the platform (never in cash to the host). A refundable security deposit is held on your card a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and released back to you after the trip if everything's returned in good shape. To avoid surprises, do a walkaround photo session at pickup and dropoff, return with a clean interior and the same fuel and propane level, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: keep dated receipts for fuel and propane, they're your easy proof if anything's ever questioned.
