Campgrounds near Carrolltown, Pennsylvania

Carrolltown sits in Cambria County on the Allegheny Plateau of west-central Pennsylvania, at roughly 2,000 feet elevation. The surrounding countryside is a mix of state forest land, working farms, and small lakes, with Prince Gallitzin State Park, Gallitzin State Forest, and the higher ridges of the Allegheny Front all within a short drive. That geography gives RV travelers a compact set of camping options without long transit days between stops. Close to town, Rock Run Recreation Area draws off-highway vehicle riders and weekend campers to its trail system, while Glendale Valley Campground and Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade serve travelers who want full hookups and family amenities. Wrights Orchard Station Campground adds a quieter, orchard-side option for shorter rigs. For a bigger-park experience, Blue Knob State Park covers 6,128 acres in Bedford County and sits on the flanks of Blue Knob, the second-highest mountain in Pennsylvania. It is roughly an hour south of Carrolltown and pairs well with a multi-stop itinerary.

At Blue Knob State Park, visitors come for fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, and downhill skiing, giving Wrights Orchard Station Campground guests a full-day option to the south.

Camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is tied to the state park calendar. The 50 tent and trailer sites at Blue Knob State Park are open from the second Friday in April to mid-October, and most nearby public campgrounds follow a similar mid-spring to mid-fall window. Private parks like Glendale Valley Campground and Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade may open slightly earlier or later depending on weather. Summer is peak. Sites at Rock Run Recreation Area and Wrights Orchard Station Campground fill fastest around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. Late September and early October bring hardwood leaf color across the plateau and cooler nights, which is a strong shoulder-season window for RV travelers who want quieter loops. Winter changes the picture. Average annual snowfall at Blue Knob averages about 12 feet, and higher elevations near Carrolltown see heavy lake-effect and upslope snow. Most tent and RV loops close for the season, though the nearby ski area keeps the region active.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

What an incredible first experience! Tony is an outstanding host. He thoroughly went over the RV with me and communication was on point. The value matched the cost. The RV was so fun to drive. It was super clean, and very comfortable. We will be renting again for sure!

This was a great RV for our camping trip to see fall foliage. It slept our group of 3 adults and 2 children very comfortably (particularly with a slider that allowed for a soft and full queen bed), had space to socialize, play games, and warm up from the outside. The stove and oven cooked beautifully and had enough heat to power through a large meal; the water could be adjusted to very hot, which was fantastic. The bathroom was roomy enough for a shower and sink. The fridge/freezer had plenty of space and kept everything nice and cold. I can’t say enough good things about the heat, it was powerful and immediate; we ended up being in some unexpectedly frosty and windy weather but never even noticed inside. Everyone slept like babies! There is storage space in a large compartment on the outside and multiple small cabinets for things inside. The power and water hook-up is a breeze, the dumping the same. You have large windows and plenty of inside lighting. As the driver, I appreciated how large my windshield viewing area was and it handled well. The only small flaw was the cracking and flaking of the seat and armrest upholstery but that was strictly cosmetic and had no negative impact on our enjoyment. Tony was a pleasure to deal with and very responsive. A positive experience all the way around!

How to book

Pennsylvania state park sites, including Blue Knob State Park, are booked through the state's reservation system. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, so summer weekends should be locked in early. Some sites may be available only from the campground on a first-come, first-served basis, and travelers should call the park to check availability. Rock Run Recreation Area is managed locally and typically handles bookings direct through its office, with OHV permits required for trail use. Private parks such as Glendale Valley Campground, Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade, and Wrights Orchard Station Campground take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and pet rules before arrival.

What to expect on arrival

Expect a mountain-plateau setting with mixed hardwood forest, farm fields, and cool evenings even in midsummer. The elevation of Blue Knob State Park can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities, and the same holds true for higher-elevation sites near Carrolltown. Pack layers and a warm sleeping setup, particularly in spring and fall. Roads into the smaller campgrounds are generally paved but narrow, with steep grades in places. Larger Class A rigs should route carefully around the Allegheny Front. Cell service is spotty in the state forest but reliable in Carrolltown and along US 219. At Blue Knob, most sites have electric service, and a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms, and playground equipment are available on site, with water at central locations rather than at every individual site.
