Dayton camping overview
Dayton is a small borough in northern Armstrong County, in the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania between the Allegheny River and the Cook Forest region. The surrounding area is rural and wooded, with a mix of private RV parks close to the borough and public recreation lands within an easy drive. Campground options in the immediate vicinity include Silver Canoe Campground, Bear Ridge Campground and RV Resort, Wheel-in Campground, Penn Wood Airstream Park, and Rustic Acres RV Resort & Campground.
Travelers basing themselves in Dayton can reach several notable public lands within roughly an hour. Crooked Creek Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood-control project located about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, offers lakefront camping and day-use recreation to the south. To the north lies the 8,500-acre Cook Forest State Park in northwestern Pennsylvania, famous for its stands of old-growth forest, with a Forest Cathedral of towering white pines and hemlocks designated a National Natural Landmark.
The mix of private full-hookup parks near Dayton and reservable public campgrounds within driving range makes the area workable for both short weekend trips and longer touring itineraries.
Things to do near Dayton
Water recreation anchors much of the region. Crooked Creek Lake supports boating and waterskiing from a boat launch with ample trailer parking, and swimmers use a sandy peninsula beach on the lake. Anglers pursue bass, muskie, sunfish, and crappie in its waters.
Hiking and paddling options extend north into the Clarion River corridor. A scenic 10-mile stretch of the Clarion River connects Clear Creek State Park to Cook Forest State Park and is popular for canoeing and rafting. Long-distance hikers can pick up the 141-mile Baker Trail, which crosses Crooked Creek Lake on its course through western Pennsylvania.
Additional day-use draws include the Crooked Creek Outdoor Discovery Center, a nine-hole disc golf course at the Justice Pavilion, and the nearby Crooked Creek Horse Park, which offers staging facilities and miles of riding trails.

Ridge Campground at Cook Forest State Park is open from mid-April to mid-October, and the Crooked Creek Lake family campground operates seasonally from about mid-May through late September. Summer weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book heavily, so travelers targeting those dates should reserve well in advance.
Weather patterns favor late spring through early fall for RV travel. Summers in the Kittanning area are warm and partly cloudy while winters are cold, snowy, and mostly cloudy, with annual temperatures typically ranging from the low twenties to the low eighties in Fahrenheit. Late spring is the wettest stretch of the year, and thunderstorms are common from May through August.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower rainfall, and foliage color through the Allegheny hills, making late September and early October a strong shoulder-season window for a quieter trip.
