Campgrounds near Derry, Pennsylvania
Derry sits in Westmoreland County in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, about an hour east of Pittsburgh. The area gives RV travelers direct access to state parks, private resorts, and the Laurel Ridge, with campgrounds clustered along US 22, PA 981, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor.
The closest public option is Lakeside at Keystone State Park, a 1,200-acre state park in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, three miles from the intersection of PA 981 and US 22. Private RV parks nearby include Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Donegal Campground, Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC, and Mountain Pines Campground, all within roughly a 30-minute drive.
Most sites in the region accommodate travel trailers and Class A, B, and C motorhomes, with a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and primitive tent options. Reservation windows and open seasons vary by property, so trip planning should account for both state-park booking rules and private-park policies before locking in dates.
Things to do near Derry
Keystone State Park anchors the outdoor options close to town. The park offers a variety of trails open year-round for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with easy access and parking at the trailheads. The 78-acre Keystone Lake has warm and cold water fishing, and the lake also supports swimming and paddling in season.
South of Derry, the Laurel Highlands open up to bigger destinations. Day trips reach Ohiopyle State Park and the Youghiogheny River for whitewater, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, and the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville.
Families staying at private resorts often use on-site amenities as the main draw, with swimming pools, stocked fishing ponds, courts, playgrounds, and clubhouse activities common at Laurel Highlands Camplands and similar parks in the Donegal area.

The main camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through mid-October. At Keystone State Park, tent and trailer sites are typically available in this window, with Lakeside Campground adjacent to the lake. Shoulder-season nights get cold, and shower facilities may not be available after October 1.
Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest. Advance booking is essential for lakefront and full-hookup sites from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when both state park loops and private resorts near Donegal fill quickly. Late June through August brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Laurel Highlands.
Fall delivers cooler nights and strong foliage color across the ridges in October, with lower occupancy midweek. Winter is cold and snowy: state-park tent and trailer sites close for the season, though a few private parks in the area keep seasonal sites available for self-contained RVs. Modern Cabins are available for rent year-round at Keystone.

How to book campgrounds near Derry
Keystone State Park bookings go through the Pennsylvania State Parks system. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival. Reservations can be made using the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.
Private campgrounds in the Donegal and Laurel Highlands area typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Peak summer weekends often require a two- or three-night minimum, and holiday weekends can sell out months in advance.
When booking, confirm rig length limits, hookup type, pet rules, and check-in windows. At Keystone, campers should choose between the Hillside Loop, which allows pets, or the Lakeside Loop based on their needs.
What to expect at campgrounds near Derry
Sites in the region range from wooded state-park loops with basic electric hookups to full-service private resorts with pull-throughs and 50-amp service. At Keystone State Park, full hookup sites accommodate RVs with electric, water, and sewer connections, while primitive sites serve tent campers and those preferring simpler setups, and both campgrounds have a modern bathhouse and a sanitary dump station is available.
Cell coverage in the Laurel Highlands can be inconsistent, so downloading offline maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is a good idea.
Bring local firewood. To help protect the forest from invasive insects that can kill trees, do not transport firewood over long distances; firewood can harbor insects such as emerald ash borer, and the use of local firewood is strongly recommended, with all firewood burned prior to departure. Wildlife, including deer and black bear, is present in the region, so store food securely.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Derry, PA
How much does an RV rental in Derry, PA cost, and how can I save?
Great news: an RV rental in Derry, PA is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Laurel Highlands. On RVezy, expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for a travel trailer, $150 to $250 for a Class C motorhome, and $100 to $160 for a campervan, depending on season and amenities. To find a cheap RV rental in Derry, book midweek, travel in May or late September when summer crowds thin, and use the price filter to sort listings. Pro tip: hosts closer to Keystone State Park often waive delivery fees if you're staying within a short drive, so message a few before booking.
visitpa.com/explore/regions/laurel-highlandsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Derry, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Derry, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and campervan rental Derry options. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there are no surprise paperwork trips to PennDOT. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the verification step is finished.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat protection comes with my Derry RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Derry, PA on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head toward the Laurel Highlands with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout, and it covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside assistance is included with the protection plan, so help is one call away if you get a flat on a back road near Keystone State Park. Pro tip: review your selected plan's inclusions before pickup so you know exactly what's covered and who to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Derry RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level (not individual hosts), so the same rules apply across every Derry RV rental. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and refunds after that window depend on how close you are to your trip date. If a host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best motorhomes for summer weekends near Ohiopyle, and review the cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center before confirming so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Derry, PA?
Absolutely: a pet-friendly RV rental in Derry, PA is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and often cats too). Once you arrive, your pup will love the trails: Keystone State Park and Ohiopyle State Park both allow leashed pets on most trails, and dogs are welcome along the Great Allegheny Passage. Pro tip: pack a tie-out stake and a collapsible water bowl for hot summer days, and message your host in advance about any pet fee or cleaning expectations so check-in is smooth.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Things-To-Know/Pets/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Derry?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Derry-wide, which means they'll drop the RV at Keystone State Park's Hillside Campground, your driveway, or a private property in Westmoreland County, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. Just filter for Delivery on the search page and check each host's delivery radius and fee. Pro tip: if you're nervous about towing or driving a 30-foot motorhome on PA Route 217 or PA Route 982, delivery turns your rental into a stationary cabin on wheels and you only have to drive your own car.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/KeystoneStatePark/Pages/default.aspxHow far can I drive on my Derry RV trip, and what's the mileage policy?
You've got real range from Derry. Hosts set their own daily mileage limits, often around 100 to 150 miles per day, and many listings offer an unlimited mileage upgrade if you're planning a longer Derry RV trip. From Derry, Ohiopyle State Park is about 35 miles south, Pittsburgh is roughly 45 miles west, Fallingwater is about 35 miles southeast, Seven Springs Mountain Resort is around 25 miles away, and Cleveland sits about 150 miles northwest. Pro tip: estimate your total miles before booking so you can match the host's allowance and avoid overage fees, or filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage for total flexibility.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Derry%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Derry, PA for RVs?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Derry, PA include Keystone State Park Campground (about 6 miles away, with electric sites, a swimming beach, and a 78-acre lake), Laurel Hill State Park Campground (about 35 miles southeast with shaded sites and a sandy beach), and Outflow Campground on Youghiogheny River Lake (around 45 miles south). Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Mill Run and Benner's Meadow Run near Ohiopyle are also favorites for whitewater fans and families. Pro tip: Keystone's electric loops book up fast for summer weekends, so reserve through the Pennsylvania State Parks system as soon as your RV is locked in.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/KeystoneStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Derry, PA?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Derry, with the absolute peak being late September and early October when the Laurel Highlands erupt in red and gold foliage. Summer highs run in the low-to-mid 80s°F and nights cool to the 60s, perfect for campfires. Spring brings wildflowers and 50s-70s°F days but expect rain. Winters are cold (lows in the 20s°F, around 40 inches of snowfall annually), and most public campgrounds close from mid-December to early April. Pro tip: book a fall foliage week 4 to 6 months ahead, it's the most photogenic and most competitive time on the platform.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Derry?
You'll be more than okay. Every RVezy host gives a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering the water tanks, slide-outs, propane, generator (if equipped), and dump procedure, so first time renting an RV in Derry won't feel like a guessing game. You can message your host with questions before booking, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with your protection plan. Derry's rural roads and the US-22 corridor are forgiving places to learn. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they drive much like a large van and are great for the winding routes around Chestnut Ridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV near Derry?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so whether it's a flat tire on PA Route 217, a dead battery at Keystone State Park, or a propane question late at night, one call gets help moving. Your host is also a direct resource and most respond within minutes via the RVezy app. Westmoreland County has multiple service stations and tow operators within a short drive of Derry borough. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate at pickup and save the roadside number to your phone before you leave.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Derry RV rental on a road trip to other states?
Yes, and Derry is a great launchpad. Popular road trips from Derry include Pittsburgh (about 45 miles west), Niagara Falls, NY (around 220 miles north), Washington, DC (about 220 miles southeast), Cleveland, OH (about 150 miles northwest), and the Finger Lakes (roughly 270 miles north). Cross-state travel within the US is generally welcome on RVezy rentals: just message the host to confirm before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend there. Canada trips may be allowed with host approval. Pro tip: the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal route from Pittsburgh to DC pairs beautifully with overnight RV stops.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Derry?
Fuel is easier to budget than most renters expect. Class C motorhomes around Derry typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle's efficiency. Check current Pennsylvania gas prices through the EIA before your trip, as prices shift weekly. A 300-mile round trip from Derry to Ohiopyle and back, including side trips, will run roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for a Class C at typical regional prices. Pro tip: fill up in Derry or Latrobe rather than at PA Turnpike service plazas, you'll often save meaningfully per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Derry?
Earlier is better, but you have options. For summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) at popular spots like Keystone State Park and Laurel Hill State Park, book several months ahead through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Fall foliage weekends in late September and early October book up nearly as fast. Private parks often have more last-minute flexibility. Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Wednesday) are usually wide open even in peak season, so a Tuesday-to-Thursday Derry RV trip can be a smart way to score a lakeside electric site without competing with the weekend rush.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like for an RV around Derry, PA?
Driving an RV around Derry is genuinely manageable. The main arteries (US-22, US-30, and PA-981) are wide, well-paved, and easy on big rigs. You'll encounter some rolling terrain and a few tight curves heading into the Laurel Highlands on PA-381 toward Ohiopyle, plus the occasional low railroad bridge in small boroughs (always use RV-specific GPS). Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so cold-weather rentals need careful planning. Pro tip: avoid the steep, narrow Skyline Drive near Laurel Caverns in larger Class A motorhomes, and stick to PA-381 and Route 40 (the historic National Road) for the prettiest, RV-friendliest scenic drives.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Derry?
Plenty to make your stay comfortable. Most campgrounds near Derry offer 30-amp and 50-amp electric hookups, potable water spigots, clean bathhouses with hot showers, and dump stations. Keystone State Park has a dump station near the campground entrance, a swimming beach, and a small camp store. Laurel Hill State Park adds a sandy beach and boat rentals. Private parks like Hillside Campground often layer on WiFi, full hookups, and laundry. Pro tip: not every site at Keystone has sewer hookups, so plan to use the on-site dump station before checkout, and fill your freshwater tank at the spigot near the contact station to avoid a dry-camping surprise.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/KeystoneStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Derry, PA?
More creature comforts than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Derry includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (so most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted travel seats. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator. WiFi varies, so plan to use your phone hotspot in remote spots like Linn Run State Park where signal can dip. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps Count and check listing photos closely to confirm bed sizes match your group before booking.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my Derry RV rental?
Hosts love making your trip turnkey. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Derry, PA include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, portable generators, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayaks, camp chairs, and outdoor games, all visible on the listing page before you book. Hosts set their own mileage policies (often with an unlimited mileage upgrade), pickup windows, and delivery zones. Most pickups happen at the host's address in or around Derry, Latrobe, or Greensburg. Pro tip: bundling a bike rack add-on lets you ride the Great Allegheny Passage straight from Ohiopyle, one of the best cycling experiences in Pennsylvania, without renting bikes onsite.
visitpa.com/explore/regions/laurel-highlandsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's all handled securely through the RVezy platform, with no cash or side payments to your host. You'll pay your rental total plus taxes and fees when you book, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold (not a charge) on your card before pickup. The deposit is released shortly after your host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, return the RV on time, with fuel topped up, tanks dumped if required, and the interior tidied. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff, it's the easiest way to keep everything fair and your deposit fully refunded.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent a winter-ready RV in Derry, PA?
Yes, and winter in the Laurel Highlands is a quietly magical RV experience. Some Derry RVezy hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces built for cold-weather camping. Most state park campgrounds near Derry close from mid-December through early April, but private parks near Seven Springs Mountain Resort often stay open year-round, perfect for ski weekends. Snowfall averages around 40 inches annually here, so confirm winter readiness with your host in a quick message. Pro tip: book a delivered, fully set-up RV near a ski resort and arrive to a warm rig with hookups already running.
