Camping near Hastings, Pennsylvania
Hastings is a small borough in northwestern Cambria County, in the valley of Brubaker Run about 13 miles north of Ebensburg and 24 miles northwest of Altoona. The town sits in the Allegheny Mountains, and the surrounding ridges and coal-country back roads put RV renters within a short drive of state parks, ATV trails, and private campgrounds.
The closest options span several styles of trip. Rock Run Recreation Area is a large OHV park near Patton with primitive and electric campsites for riders. Glendale Valley Campground and Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade cover private-park stays closer to town, and Wrights Orchard Station Campground sits farther east toward the Altoona side of the county.
For a state-park option, Blue Knob State Park lies south in Bedford County and covers 6,128 acres of woodland on the second-highest mountain in Pennsylvania. It is a longer drive from Hastings but a common choice for renters willing to trade distance for public-land camping and cooler summer temperatures at elevation.
Things to do around Hastings
Off-highway riding is the signature activity in this corner of the Alleghenies. Rock Run Recreation Area operates more than 140 miles of ATV, UTV, dirt-bike, and side-by-side trails across the northern Cambria and southern Clearfield county backcountry, with routes graded from easy cruisers to technical climbs.
Beyond the trails, families use the region for lake time, fishing, and hiking. Prince Gallitzin State Park, west of Patton, has a large lake for boating and fishing, sand beach swimming, and paved biking paths. Blue Knob State Park adds nearly 20 miles of hiking trails, mountain biking, a swimming pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and downhill skiing at the adjacent Blue Knob All Seasons Resort in winter.

The camping season here runs mid-spring through mid-fall. Blue Knob State Park's 50 tent and trailer sites open the second Friday in April and close in mid-October. Rock Run Recreation Area operates April through October, with expanded Wednesday-through-Sunday hours from June through September and Friday-through-Sunday hours in April, May, and October.
Summer is the busiest window. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day book earliest, and Rock Run hosts a large annual Summer Blast event that fills the campgrounds. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage, and Pennsylvania's rifle deer season, which affects campground availability and trail use into December at some public lands.
Winter is a serious season at elevation. Blue Knob averages roughly 12 feet of snowfall a year, and temperatures at the ridge run several degrees cooler than surrounding towns. Most private campgrounds close, but the ski resort, snowmobile routes, and cross-country trails stay active.
How to book campsites near Hastings
Pennsylvania state parks, including Blue Knob State Park, take reservations through the state's system at visitPAparks.com or by phone. Sites can be booked up to 11 months ahead, and standard campsites require reserving at least three days before arrival. Summer weekends at popular loops go quickly, so booking as soon as the window opens is the safer plan.
Rock Run Recreation Area handles its own bookings directly with the park office. It offers over 350 primitive sites plus 16 electrified 30/50-amp sites at the Clayworks loop, and camping is for riders only. Anyone on-property, riding or not, must buy an admission pass for the day. Private campgrounds in the Hastings area generally reserve by phone; call the operator to confirm rig length, hookups, and pet rules before locking in an RV rental.
What to expect on the ground
This is rural Allegheny high country, not a resort corridor. Expect two-lane roads, small towns, and stretches without cell coverage between campgrounds. Elevations of roughly 1,800 to 3,100 feet keep summer nights cool and can bring fog and quick thunderstorms, so pack layers even in July.
Hookups vary widely. Rock Run is primarily primitive, with only its Clayworks loop offering electric and no water or dump station in that loop. Blue Knob's campground has most sites on electric, with running water, a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms, and playground equipment, but no full hookups at individual sites. Private parks in the area are the option for full 30/50-amp service with sewer.
Campers should also note that alcohol is prohibited in most areas of Pennsylvania state parks outside of designated overnight facilities, and quiet hours generally run from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
