Campgrounds and RV parks near Kersey, PA

Elk viewing is the signature draw. The Elk Country Visitor Center on Winslow Hill in Benezette, along with nearby viewing areas at Dents Run and Hicks Run, offer accessible spots to see Pennsylvania's elk herd, the largest free-roaming elk herd east of the Mississippi River. Dawn and dusk are the productive windows, and September into October brings the bugling rut. Paddlers float the Clarion River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic river. Hikers and cyclists use the Clarion / Little Toby Rail Trail out of Ridgway, and backpackers link into the Quehanna Trail and Bucktail Path through Elk State Forest. ATV riders access the Bloody Skillet ATV Trail and connected routes in the state forest. Rainy-day options include the Straub Brewery visitor center in St. Marys and the Elk County Fairgrounds in Kersey.

Summer runs warm and humid, with daytime highs typically in the mid to upper 70s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon showers. It is the peak family window: private parks fill on holiday weekends, and the Simon B Elliott State Park campground is open through this stretch. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest stretch of the year, so plan for rain gear and awnings. Fall is the standout season. Late September and October bring the elk rut, cool nights, and hardwood color across the Pennsylvania Wilds. Weekends around peak leaf viewing draw heavy demand at Benezette-area lodging and at campgrounds within a half-hour drive, so book early. State-park campgrounds in the area generally close after October. Winter is cold and snowy, with January averaging a high near freezing and lows in the teens Fahrenheit. The Simon B Elliott campground is closed from November through early May, and most private RV parks in Elk County operate seasonally. Snowmobilers use trail networks in Moshannon and Elk state forests. Spring is muddy and variable, with private parks reopening in April or May as overnight lows climb.

Sites in this region range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private parks like DuBois / Treasure Lake KOA Holiday to rustic, non-electric loops at Simon B Elliott State Park, which offers 25 sites with modern flush restrooms (no showers) and a sanitary dump station. State forest campsites have no developed facilities. Cell coverage is spotty in the valleys, so download maps before leaving pavement. Roads into the state forests are winding, and some access roads are gravel. Large rigs should stick to state highways and confirm site length limits when booking. Bring bug spray in early summer, and pack layers year-round: overnight lows in Elk County drop sharply once the sun clears the ridgeline. Pennsylvania restricts moving firewood to slow the spread of the spotted lanternfly and other pests, so buy wood locally.
