Campgrounds near Kittanning
Kittanning sits on the Allegheny River in Armstrong County, western Pennsylvania, roughly 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The area combines river frontage, rolling forested hills, and small-town access, which gives RV travelers a range of nearby campgrounds within a short drive of town.
Private campgrounds within the immediate region include Bear Ridge Campground and RV Resort, Wheel-in Campground, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, Silver Canoe Campground, and Mountain Top Campground. These sites typically cater to RV travelers with hookup sites, dump stations, and family amenities, and they vary in size from small rural parks to larger resort-style operations.
Public recreation is anchored by Crooked Creek Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir near Ford City with a 46-site family campground plus day-use beach, boat launch, and picnic shelters. Together, the private parks and the Corps site cover most trip styles, from quiet weekends to lake-based family stays.
Things to do near Kittanning
The Allegheny River drives much of the local recreation. Kayaking, canoeing, and small-boat fishing are common on the river and on nearby Crooked Creek Lake, which yields bass, muskie, sunfish, and crappie. A sandy peninsula beach at Crooked Creek is open for swimming in summer, and a boat launch with trailer parking serves powerboaters and water-skiers.
Hikers can pick up the Baker Trail, a 141-mile long-distance route through western Pennsylvania that crosses Crooked Creek Lake. Shorter loop trails and an Auto Tour Trail cover local history, including one-room schools, an early water-powered sawmill, and Revolutionary War depreciation lands. A 9-hole disc golf course is also available at the Justice Pavilion within the recreation area.

The core RV season in the Kittanning area runs from late spring through early fall. Crooked Creek Lake's family campground operates seasonally, roughly mid-May through late September, and most private parks open by mid-spring and close after leaf season. July is the warmest month, with typical highs around 83°F, and humidity stays moderate compared with the mid-Atlantic coast.
Early summer brings the wettest stretch: June is the wettest month on average, so expect muddy sites, higher river flows, and occasional storm days. This is also prime fishing and paddling time, and biting insects pick up along the river.
Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October, making it a strong shoulder season for RV travel. Winter is cold and snowy: January averages a high near 36°F with regular snowfall, and most campgrounds in the area shut down or drop to very limited service.

How to book campgrounds near Kittanning
Private campgrounds around Kittanning, including Bear Ridge Campground and RV Resort, Wheel-in Campground, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, Silver Canoe Campground, and Mountain Top Campground, are booked directly with each park by phone or through the park's own website. Holiday weekends and July fill first, so reserve well ahead for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Crooked Creek Lake's family campground is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and reserved through Recreation.gov. Sites can be booked online or by phone, and stays are limited to 14 consecutive nights within any 30-day period.
Pennsylvania state park campgrounds within driving range use the state's separate reservation system and open bookings on a rolling calendar.
What to expect
Expect a rural, hill-country setting rather than a resort corridor. Roads into the smaller campgrounds are narrow and winding in places, and some sites have tight turns and limited maneuvering room, which matters for longer motorhomes and travel trailers.
Hookup availability varies. Private parks generally offer water and electric, often with sewer or a dump station on site. The Corps campground at Crooked Creek Lake is more basic, with sites set close together in an open, grassy layout and limited water access from a single spigot near the restrooms, so bring long hoses.
Cell service is reasonable near town and along main highways but drops off in the river valleys and forested areas. Bring bug spray for river-adjacent sites in early summer, pack layers for cool nights in spring and fall, and buy firewood locally to avoid spreading invasive pests.

Good news for first-time renters: a regular Class C Pennsylvania driver's license (or the equivalent from any other US state or Canadian province) is all you need to rent and drive almost every RV listed on RVezy in Kittanning. PennDOT only requires a Non-Commercial Class A or Class B license if your motorhome or trailer combination has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, which is rare on the peer-to-peer marketplace. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. No CDL, no RV endorsement, and no special test required. Most renters are surprised how quickly approval clears so they can start planning their Allegheny River escape.
