Campgrounds and RV parks near Lenape Heights, PA

Crooked Creek Lake is the main outdoor draw within a short drive. The Army Corps property has a boat launch, a sandy peninsula beach for swimming, a nine-hole disc golf course at the Justice Pavilion, and productive fishing for bass, muskie, sunfish, and crappie. The long-distance Baker Trail crosses the project on its way north, and shorter loops connect to picnic pavilions. The Allegheny River itself runs along the base of the ridge, with kayak and canoe access near Kittanning and Ford City. Rail-trail cycling on the Armstrong Trail follows the river for many miles, and Cook Forest State Park to the north offers old-growth white pine and hemlock stands plus paddling on the Clarion River. Rainy-day options include the Crooked Creek Outdoor Discovery Center and small-town museums in Kittanning.

The camping season in this part of western Pennsylvania is shaped by both weather and public-park calendars. Crooked Creek Lake Campground, the closest federal option, operates seasonally in the warm months, with a 14-night stay limit inside any 30-day window. Cook Forest State Park runs its Ridge Campground from mid-April to mid-October, and shower houses may close during freezing weather. Late spring and early summer bring warm days, green forest, and higher water on the Allegheny and Clarion rivers, which is good for paddling but can raise flash-flood risk during thunderstorms. Mid-summer is peak season for family camping, swim beaches, and lake use; weekend sites at Crooked Creek and Cook Forest can book out well in advance. Fall delivers reliable color through October and cooler nights that are comfortable for RV sleeping. Winter camping options are limited to a handful of year-round private parks such as Mountain Top Campground and Silver Canoe Campground, plus a small number of Cook Forest sites available when weather allows access.

The landscape around Lenape Heights is rolling hardwood ridge cut by the Allegheny River valley. Roads off PA-66 and PA-28 are the main access routes to nearby campgrounds; some of the last miles into private parks are narrow and hilly, so drivers of longer trailers should approach slowly and check turn-in directions before arriving. Hookup availability varies. Bear Ridge offers full hookups and can accept big rigs, while Army Corps sites at Crooked Creek Lake have no electric or water hookups and rely on flush toilets and a shared dump station. Cell service can be weak or unreliable at wooded properties in the county, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations in advance is smart. Black bears are present in the surrounding forest, so food and trash should be stored in the RV or hard-sided containers overnight.
