Norvelt sits in Westmoreland County in southwestern Pennsylvania, on the western edge of the Laurel Highlands. It is a census-designated place in Mount Pleasant Township, founded in 1934 as Westmoreland Homesteads and later renamed to honor Eleanor Roosevelt. The area works well as a base for RV travelers who want quick access to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Pittsburgh, and the state parks along the Laurel Ridge.

Fox Den Acres sits in the Laurel Highlands about 35 miles from Pittsburgh with easy highway access, scheduled activities, a swimming pool, game room, playground, store, and pull-through sites suited to big rigs. Mountain Pines Campground, in the Allegheny Foothills, offers tent sites, full-hookup RV sites, cabins, fishing, mini-golf, and what it bills as the largest outdoor swimming pool in Pennsylvania.
Public-land camping in the surrounding Laurel Highlands is managed by Pennsylvania State Parks, which handles reservations centrally through the DCNR system.
Things to do near Norvelt
The Laurel Highlands provide the main draw. The area surrounds the Youghiogheny River and Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's house over Bear Run, with hiking, fishing, and nature within easy reach. Families staying at nearby RV parks have on-site options too. Fox Den Acres Campground offers a swimming pool, playground, game room, and small ponds for fishing. Donegal Campground is within a short drive of Ohiopyle State Park for rafting and hiking, Fallingwater, and the Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts, which give the area year-round appeal.
Winter travelers use Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain for skiing and tubing.

How to book campgrounds near Norvelt
Private RV parks near Norvelt take reservations directly. Fox Den Acres, Donegal Campground, Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC, Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, and Mountain Pines Campground each accept bookings by phone or through their own websites and partner platforms. Fox Den Acres also lists propane and check-in and check-out details on its site.
For state-park camping in the Laurel Highlands, use the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservation system operated by DCNR. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance, with a noon Eastern release, and most sites require booking at least three days ahead of arrival.
Summer holiday weekends and fall foliage weekends fill first, so book early if a specific site type or big-rig pull-through is needed.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rolling terrain, wooded sites, and quick highway access. Many parks in the area sit near the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC is an RV park right off the Donegal exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a convenient stop for travel southeast of Pittsburgh. Turnpike proximity means road noise at several parks close to Donegal.
Hookups and amenities are typical of family-oriented RV parks. Fox Den Acres has over 100 full-hookup sites, pull-through spots that accommodate big rigs, fire rings, picnic tables, restrooms, showers, and laundry. Mountain Pines RV sites offer 20, 30, and 50 amp service alongside cabins and tent sites.
Pennsylvania state parks ask campers to use local firewood to help slow the spread of tree pests, so plan to buy firewood near the campground rather than hauling it across state lines.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Norvelt, PA
How much does an RV rental in Norvelt cost, and when can I find the best deals?
Great news: an RV rental in Norvelt is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Laurel Highlands. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, campervans run roughly $150 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes average $200 to $325 per night. Hosts in Westmoreland County set their own rates, so you'll see plenty of variety. For a cheap RV rental Norvelt option, book midweek trips in late April, early May, or November when shoulder-season pricing kicks in. Pro tip: many local owners drop nightly rates for stays of 5+ nights, so extending your trip from a long weekend to a full week often costs less per day.
golaurelhighlands.com/outdoors/parks/What license do I need to rent an RV in Norvelt, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Norvelt, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers listed on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and ID verification happens directly through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you arrive and pair it with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised at how quickly the paperwork is handled, usually in just a few clicks.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/driver-vehicle-services.htmlWhat's included for protection and peace of mind on every Norvelt RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Norvelt booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-30 or a dead battery at a Westmoreland County trailhead won't derail your trip. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your rental, giving you real peace of mind. During checkout, you'll choose from different protection tiers so you can match coverage to your comfort level, whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned road tripper. You select the plan, not the host, which keeps you in control of your RV rental in Norvelt.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Norvelt RV trip?
Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without worry. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and there are additional protections built in for situations like severe weather or natural disasters, which matter in the Laurel Highlands where snowstorms can pop up between November and March. You'll see the exact terms during checkout. The short version: you're not stuck the moment you click Book, so go ahead and plan that Pennsylvania RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Norvelt RV rental?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on the road. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Norvelt, and you can filter listings by Pet-Friendly to see them instantly. Pennsylvania state parks near Norvelt allow pets at designated campsites, including Keystone State Park in Derry (about 20 minutes away) and Linn Run State Park near Rector. Ohiopyle State Park, about an hour south, has miles of dog-friendly trails along the Youghiogheny River. Always keep dogs on a six-foot leash in state parks and clean up after them. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (often $25 to $75 for the trip) and ask about any breed or size preferences.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/Pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Norvelt?
Yes, RV delivery in Norvelt is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many Westmoreland County hosts will drive the RV directly to a campground like Keystone State Park or Laurel Hill State Park, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing in, and no fumbling with the propane regulator on your first night. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer it. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round trip from the host's location. Pro tip: ask about a setup-and-teardown package so you only have to enjoy the campfire.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Norvelt%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive on my Norvelt RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You can cover a lot of ground from Norvelt. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many including 100 to 150 free miles per night and additional miles priced around $0.35 to $0.50 each. Some hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a bigger Pennsylvania RV trip. Popular drives from Norvelt include Ohiopyle State Park (about 35 miles south), Pittsburgh (about 45 miles west), Fallingwater (about 30 miles south), Seven Springs Mountain Resort (about 20 miles east), and Gettysburg (about 175 miles east). Pro tip: if you're planning a longer loop through the Laurel Highlands and Pittsburgh, filter for unlimited-mileage listings up front to avoid surprises at checkout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Norvelt%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Norvelt for RV camping?
You're surrounded by excellent options for RV camping Norvelt travelers love. Keystone State Park in Derry (about 12 miles away) offers campsites with electric hookups and a swimming lake. Laurel Hill State Park near Somerset has hundreds of sites along the 63-acre Laurel Hill Lake. Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground sits above the Youghiogheny River with electric sites. For a private RV park experience, Mountain Pines Campground in Champion is a local favorite. Pro tip: reserve Pennsylvania state park sites up to 11 months ahead through the official PA State Parks reservation system, especially for fall foliage weekends in mid-October when sites book out fast.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/Camping.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Norvelt?
Norvelt has a true four-season climate, and late spring through mid-fall is prime time. May through early June brings mountain laurel blooms and highs in the 65 to 75 degree range, perfect for hiking at Laurel Ridge State Park. July and August are warm and humid with highs around 80 to 85 degrees, ideal for swimming at Keystone Lake. The real local secret is late September through mid-October: crisp 55 to 70 degree days, fewer bugs, and Pennsylvania's famous fall colors lighting up the Laurel Highlands. Winter trips are possible too with the right rig, especially around Seven Springs and Laurel Mountain ski areas. Pro tip: book October dates by July as foliage weekends sell out quickly.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Norvelt beginner-friendly?
Yes, first time renting an RV in the Norvelt area is genuinely easy. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, water, electric, propane, slide-outs, and the toilet system, so you're never handed the keys and left to guess. If you're nervous about driving, choose a smaller Class B campervan or a 22 to 25 foot Class C, both of which handle similarly to a large pickup. Better yet, request delivery so you skip driving the RV entirely. The local roads, US-30, Route 22, and Route 982, are well-maintained and RV-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking with any questions, most respond within a few hours and love helping new renters succeed.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road near Norvelt?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a battery issue at a Linn Run trailhead, or a lockout at Keystone State Park is one phone call away from help. You also have a direct line to your host, who knows the rig better than anyone and can troubleshoot quirks over the phone. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip if anything bigger comes up. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number in your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, it makes any service call faster.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take a Norvelt RV rental on a longer road trip or across state lines?
Absolutely, an RV road trip from Norvelt is one of the best ways to see the eastern U.S. Most hosts welcome cross-state travel, so you can easily reach Niagara Falls (about 220 miles north), Washington D.C. (about 215 miles southeast), the Outer Banks (around 450 miles southeast), or Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio (about 130 miles northwest). Travel to Canada may be allowed with advance host approval and additional documentation, so message the host before booking if Toronto or Niagara-on-the-Lake is on your list. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm your route in the booking message so the host can flag any mileage or border details upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Fuel is easier to plan for than you'd think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically lands at 9 to 13 MPG. Regular gas in the Norvelt area runs roughly $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon, with cheaper stations clustered near Greensburg and along Route 22. For a typical 3-night trip with about 250 miles of driving in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to spot the best prices on US-119 and avoid filling up at the small stations along Route 711 in the mountains where prices skew higher.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxHow far in advance should I book a campground near Norvelt?
Earlier is always better in the Laurel Highlands. Pennsylvania state parks like Keystone, Laurel Hill, and Ohiopyle accept reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system, and prime weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and the first three weekends of October for fall foliage regularly sell out 4 to 6 months ahead. For a typical summer weekend, aim to book 2 to 3 months out. Private parks like Mountain Pines usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: if a state park shows full, check back around the standard check-out time, cancellations often refresh the system and you can grab a same-day spot.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/Reservations.aspxWhat are driving conditions like around Norvelt for a motorhome rental?
Good news: motorhome rental Norvelt drivers will find most main roads easy to navigate. US-30, Route 22, and US-119 are wide, well-paved, and handle big rigs without issue. Where to slow down: the winding climb up Laurel Mountain on Route 271 and the steep grades on Route 381 heading to Ohiopyle, both gorgeous but requiring lower gears on descents. Avoid narrow back roads like Linn Run Road for anything over 25 feet. Winter brings snow and ice November through March, so check 511PA before heading out. Pro tip: the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) is the smoothest east-west route, just note that vehicles over 9 feet wide or carrying propane have specific tunnel rules.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Norvelt?
You'll find a great mix of options. Pennsylvania state parks near Norvelt typically offer modern restrooms with hot showers in warmer months, picnic tables, and fire rings at every site. Electric hookups (20, 30, or 50 amp) are available at most parks, and full-hookup sites (water, electric, and sewer) are expanding, with Laurel Hill State Park among those adding them. Dump stations and potable water fills are standard at Keystone, Laurel Hill, and Ohiopyle. Private parks like Mountain Pines Campground in Champion add pools, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Pro tip: state park sites cap at 14 consecutive nights between Memorial Day and Labor Day and 21 nights the rest of the year, plenty of time for a full Laurel Highlands adventure.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat's actually inside a typical RV I can rent in Norvelt?
More than you'd expect, even in compact rigs. A typical campervan rental Norvelt travelers book sleeps 2 to 4 and includes a small kitchen with a fridge, two-burner stove, sink, and either a wet bath or portable toilet. Class C motorhomes (the most popular family choice) sleep 4 to 8 and add a full bathroom with shower, microwave, oven, dinette, sofa, queen bed, and overhead bunk, plus seatbelted seating for travel. Most rentals come with a roof-top air conditioner, furnace, generator or shore-power setup, and a TV. Many hosts include linens, kitchenware, camp chairs, and outdoor mats. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and ask about Wi-Fi hotspots if you need to work or stream at remote sites like Linn Run.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Norvelt rental?
Hosts offer plenty of ways to customize. Common add-ons include generator use ($3 to $5 per hour over a daily allowance), bike racks ($25 to $50 per trip), outdoor grills, kayaks, kid and pet bundles, and pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home or driveway in or near Norvelt, with delivery to campgrounds across Westmoreland and Fayette counties as an upgrade. Mileage is set per listing, often 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras at roughly $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery, generator hours, and a fully stocked camp kit on a 3-night Ohiopyle trip is usually cheaper than buying gear separately and saves a long packing list.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesHow does payment and the security deposit work on my Norvelt RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never directly to the host, so your transaction is protected end-to-end. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Avoiding deposit issues is easy: take time-stamped photos and videos at pickup and drop-off, fill the gas and propane to the level noted in the listing, and follow the host's mileage and cleaning guidelines. Pro tip: ask the host about included cleaning so you're not surprised by a tidy-up fee.
