Campgrounds and RV parks near South Greensburg, PA

Keystone State Park is a short drive northeast and centers on a 78-acre lake with warm and cold water fishing, a sand beach open from late May to mid-September, and boating. The park keeps trails open year-round, including the 2-mile Lakeside Loop that circles the lake and works well for families with kids on bikes. The Laurel Highlands to the east add Ohiopyle State Park and whitewater on the Youghiogheny River, plus Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob within an hour's drive. From New Stanton and Ruffs Dale, Pittsburgh is roughly 45 minutes away for pro sports, museums, and Kennywood. On-site amenities at the private parks add pools, playgrounds, and fishing. Fox Den Acres Campgrounds has a swimming pool, a playground, a game room, and a small lake for fishing.

The main camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from spring through mid-fall. At Keystone State Park, 100 tent and trailer sites split between the Lakeside and Hillside loops open in early April and the campground closes the third Sunday in October, with shower facilities not available after October 1. Private parks in the immediate area generally follow a similar pattern, with Fox Den Acres Campgrounds operating from May 1 through October 31. Summer is peak season, with warm days, active pool use, and full weekend bookings around July 4 and Labor Day. Fall brings cool nights and strong foliage color across the Laurel Highlands ridges, typically peaking in mid-October. Spring is cooler and wetter but quieter, with fewer holiday crowds. Winter camping is limited. Most seasonal parks close for the cold months, and modern cabins at Keystone State Park remain available year-round. Snow, freezing temperatures, and water shutoffs at seasonal parks make an RV with tanks and propane heat a practical minimum for off-season stays.

Site types vary by park. Full hookup sites accommodate RVs with electric, water, and sewer connections, while more basic sites serve tent campers and those preferring simpler setups. Fox Den Acres Campgrounds has over 100 full-hookup sites, accepts big rigs, and offers long pull-throughs, which is useful for larger motorhomes and travel trailers towing a second vehicle. At Keystone State Park, the Lakeside loop sits next to the lake with 40 sites, while the Hillside loop has 60 sites in a more remote setting and is the loop that accommodates pets. Both loops have a modern bathhouse and share a sanitary dump station. Cell service can be spotty in the state park, so downloading maps before arrival helps. To protect Pennsylvania forests from invasive insects, do not transport firewood over long distances; buy or gather local firewood instead.
