Campgrounds near West Hills, Pennsylvania
West Hills is a small census-designated place in East Franklin Township, Armstrong County, sitting on the west side of the Allegheny River across from Kittanning in western Pennsylvania. The area is rural and hilly, with a mix of farmland, woodlots, and river-valley terrain that puts RV travelers within easy reach of both the Allegheny River corridor and the wider Pittsburgh metro region.
Campgrounds close to West Hills tend to be privately run family parks rather than large public facilities. Options within a reasonable drive include Bear Ridge Campground and RV Resort, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, Wheel-in Campground, Silver Canoe Campground, and Mountain Top Campground. Most cater to seasonal and short-stay RV guests with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites, electric and water hookups, and dump-station access.
Because West Hills itself has no state park within its boundaries, most trip plans pair a private campground stay with day trips to nearby public lands such as Crooked Creek Lake, Cook Forest, Moraine, and the Allegheny National Forest to the north.
Things to do near West Hills
The Allegheny River is the main draw for outdoor time near West Hills. Kayaking, canoeing, and bass fishing are popular on the river itself, and the Armstrong Trail follows the former rail corridor along the east bank for walking and cycling. Silver Canoe Campground reflects the paddling character of the region in its name and setting.
Day trips reach Crooked Creek Lake for boating and shoreline recreation, Cook Forest State Park for old-growth hemlock hikes along the Clarion River, and Moraine State Park for sailing on Lake Arthur. Families staying at Bear Ridge Campground and RV Resort, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, Wheel-in Campground, or Mountain Top Campground often build itineraries around these public lands, with Pittsburgh accessible for a rainy-day city trip.

Western Pennsylvania has a four-season climate with a clear camping window. Most private campgrounds in the West Hills area open in April and close in mid to late October, and nearby federal and state campgrounds follow similar seasonal patterns. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with July weekends and holiday periods filling first.
Spring brings cool nights, wet trails, and rising rivers from snowmelt and rain. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and daytime highs typically in the low 80s Fahrenheit. This is the strongest window for river paddling, tubing, and lake recreation. Fall delivers reliable color through October across the Allegheny Plateau, with cooler nights that favor campfires; weekend sites near Cook Forest and the Allegheny National Forest book out well ahead during foliage peak.
Winter camping is limited. Snow, freezing temperatures, and closed water systems mean most private parks are shut, and public park facilities operate on a reduced schedule.

How to book an RV site near West Hills
Private campgrounds around West Hills, including Bear Ridge Campground and RV Resort, Smith Grove Camp Grounds, Wheel-in Campground, Silver Canoe Campground, and Mountain Top Campground, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends, foliage weekends in October, and any dates near local festivals should be booked several months in advance.
Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, including those at Cook Forest and Moraine used as day trips or overflow, are reserved through the state's central system at pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com, which opens bookings up to eleven months in advance at noon Eastern time. For federal sites such as Crooked Creek Lake, check the operating U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office for current reservation procedures. For an RV rental delivery, confirm the site's rig-length limit, hookup type, and any delivery-vehicle access rules with the campground before finalizing the booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rural, wooded settings with rolling terrain. Sites at nearby parks range from open grassy pull-throughs to shaded back-ins under mature hardwoods. Cell coverage is generally usable near the river valley and along US 422 and PA 28, but can weaken quickly in the hollows and inside the Allegheny National Forest.
Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Kittanning and Ford City, both a short drive from West Hills, with larger big-box shopping in Butler and the Pittsburgh suburbs. Black bears, deer, and raccoons are present across the region, so standard food-storage practice applies. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and ticks, are active from late spring through early fall; long sleeves and repellent are worth packing.
