Camping near Charlestown, Rhode Island
Charlestown sits on Rhode Island's southern coast in Washington County, wedged between salt ponds, barrier beaches, and Block Island Sound. The town is a compact base for RV travelers exploring South County, with several state-run and private campgrounds within a short drive of Route 1.
Most of the camping inventory in the immediate area is managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. Burlingame State Park is the largest option, a roughly 2,100-acre park on Watchaug Pond with about 700 rustic campsites and 20 cabins. Charlestown Breachway Campground sits on the east side of the Breachway with views of Block Island Sound and is limited to fully self-contained RVs, while East Beach State Park offers about 20 primitive sites on an undeveloped barrier beach.
For RVers who need full hookups, Wordens Pond Family Campground in nearby South Kingstown and Ashaway RV Resort in Hopkinton fill the gap, adding electric, water, sewer, and family-oriented amenities that the state campgrounds do not provide.
Things to do around Charlestown
Beaches drive most trip planning here. Charlestown Breachway, East Beach, and nearby Misquamicut State Beach all offer Atlantic swimming and surf, and the Breachway is well known for saltwater fishing, with a boat launch used by anglers targeting striped bass and bluefish.
Inland, Burlingame State Park backs up to the Burlingame Management Area and Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary, with hiking trails, a freshwater beach on Watchaug Pond, a boat ramp, and canoe rentals. Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge sits nearby with flat trails and birding.
Families often pair camp days with drives to Watch Hill, the ferry to Block Island from Point Judith, or day trips to Mystic, Connecticut for the seaport and aquarium.

The camping season in Charlestown is short. State campgrounds generally run from mid-spring through mid-fall, with Charlestown Breachway historically operating from mid-April into late October and East Beach opening for a shorter window from late May through early September. Ashaway RV Resort and Wordens Pond Family Campground follow a similar mid-April to mid-October pattern.
Summer is peak season. Sites at Burlingame and the Breachway book heavily for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and beach parking at East Beach fills early on sunny days. Rhode Island State Parks defines peak season as the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend through the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, with a maximum seven-night stay allowed within any twenty-one day period during that window.
Shoulder months in May, September, and October bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and easier reservations. Winter closes state campgrounds entirely, and coastal storms can affect access to barrier beaches.

My family had a great time camping with Maria and Kevin’s camper. They were very responsive when we needed help and friendly during drop off and pickup. Will book with them again if we don’t have our own camper next year!

How to book a campsite
Rhode Island's state campgrounds, including Burlingame State Park, Charlestown Breachway, and East Beach, are reserved through ReserveAmerica. Bookings can be made up to 12 months in advance, and the state has recently released each season's inventory on a set opening date rather than a strictly rolling window, so check riparks.ri.gov before planning.
Charlestown Breachway and East Beach require fully self-contained RVs with manufacturer-installed permanent holding tanks for potable, gray, and black water. East Beach additionally requires four-wheel drive and a Barrier Beach Permit from the RI Coastal Resources Management Council. Tents, pop-ups, tow trailers, and fifth wheels are not allowed at East Beach, and tents and pop-ups are not allowed at the Breachway.
Wordens Pond Family Campground and Ashaway RV Resort are private and book directly through each campground's website or phone line.
What to expect on-site
Expect a split between rustic state campgrounds and full-service private parks. Burlingame State Park has restrooms with showers, a camp store, playground, arcade, and a freshwater beach on Watchaug Pond, but individual sites do not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups. A dump station and water filling station are available on-site. Check-in runs from 1 PM to 10 PM.
Charlestown Breachway and East Beach are more primitive: no hookups and no on-site dump station, with East Beach limited to composting toilets. Open fires are prohibited at East Beach, and pets are not allowed at either coastal state site. Registered East Beach campers may use the dump and water fill at Burlingame or Fishermen's Memorial once at no charge.
Ashaway RV Resort and Wordens Pond Family Campground offer the full-hookup amenities that state sites lack, including electric service and family-oriented facilities.

riparks.ri.gov/campgrounds/camping-area-descriptions-specific-requirementsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Charlestown, RI?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Charlestown. Rhode Island does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV-specific endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, or campervans, as long as you're not operating commercially. You'll need to be 25 or older and pass RVezy's quick ID verification during booking, which happens right on the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before your trip and pair it with your home license. That's it, no extra paperwork at the Wakefield DMV branch, and you're ready to roll toward Watchaug Pond.
dmv.ri.gov/licenses-permits-ids/drivers-licensesWhat protection and roadside assistance come with my Charlestown RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Charlestown through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Route 1 or a dead battery at East Beach is handled with one phone call. During checkout, you choose your protection level, which covers eligible physical damage to the RV. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial protection and peace of mind so you can focus on clamming at Ninigret Pond. You select the coverage tier yourself and can compare options in the booking flow before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is RVezy's cancellation policy for a Charlestown trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies one clear cancellation policy to every Charlestown RV rental, so you never have to decode different rules host by host. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and refunds tier down based on how close to your trip start date you cancel. If a host has to cancel, RVezy helps you secure a refund or rebooking credit. Pro tip: book early in spring for the best summer site selection, knowing the grace period window has your back if plans shift. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center.

Absolutely, Charlestown is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Rhode Island. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental Charlestown listings on RVezy to find hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots (many waive extra fees for well-behaved pups). Burlingame State Park allows leashed dogs throughout its 3,100 acres and on most trails around Watchaug Pond, and Blue Shutters Town Beach permits dogs in the off-season. The Kimball Wildlife Refuge next to Burlingame has shaded trails perfect for warm-day walks. Pro tip: Charlestown Town Beach restricts dogs from May 15 to September 15, so plan beach time at pet-welcoming Quonochontaug or visit during shoulder season for sandy paw prints.
charlestownri.gov/government/departments/parks-and-recreationCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Charlestown?
Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Charlestown straight to Burlingame State Park, Charlestown Breachway, East Beach State Campground, or even a private driveway near Quonochontaug Pond. Your host arrives, levels the rig, hooks up utilities where available, and walks you through every system from the awning to the water pump. You skip towing on Route 1 traffic and start vacation immediately. Delivery fees vary by host and distance, and many offer flat-rate packages for popular South County campgrounds. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who serves the 02813 area.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Charlestown%2C%20Rhode%20IslandHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Charlestown?
You're perfectly positioned for an unforgettable RV road trip from Charlestown. Newport's mansions and Ocean Drive are just 35 miles east (about 50 minutes), Cape Cod's Sagamore Bridge is 85 miles northeast (under two hours), and Mystic Seaport in Connecticut sits only 20 miles west. Want bigger adventure? Acadia National Park is roughly 320 miles north, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are 220 miles away. nps.gov/acad/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Charlestown?
You have some of New England's finest coastal camping right in town. The best campgrounds near Charlestown include Burlingame State Park (around 700 rustic sites on Watchaug Pond, with generous RV length limits), Charlestown Breachway State Campground (about 75 oceanfront sites for self-contained RVs only, steps from Block Island Sound), and East Beach State Campground (around 20 secluded sites between the ocean and Ninigret Pond). For full hookups, Worden's Pond Family Campground and Whispering Pines Campground in nearby Hope Valley offer pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Pro tip: check the Rhode Island State Parks site before booking in case any facility upgrades affect site availability, and have a backup option ready.
riparks.ri.gov/campgrounds/camping-area-descriptions-specific-requirementsWhen is the best time to visit Charlestown in an RV?
Late June through early September is prime time for a Charlestown, RI RV trip, with average highs of 76 to 80 F and warm ocean water at East Beach and Blue Shutters. But the smart-money move is shoulder season: May and September deliver 65 to 72 F days, far fewer crowds, lower nightly rates, and no greenhead flies. October brings stunning foliage along the Wood-Pawcatuck River with crisp 55 to 65 F days. Rhode Island state campgrounds typically run April through October, so winter RV trips here are limited. Pro tip: Labor Day weekend through mid-September is the local sweet spot, warm beaches without summer prices.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Charlestown?
You will do great, and most first time renters in Charlestown say it was easier than expected. Every RVezy booking includes a hands-on orientation where your host walks you through driving, hookups, the propane stove, the water system, the awning, and dumping tanks before you ever leave the driveway. You can also message your host directly through the listing with questions before you book. For a first time renting an RV trip, choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer (22 to 28 feet), book a hookup site at Worden's Pond or Whispering Pines for an easier learning curve, and consider delivery so you skip the driving stress on Route 1 entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Charlestown RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every Charlestown RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Whether you are on Interstate 95 heading toward Providence or parked at Charlestown Breachway, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also your local lifeline: they know the rig inside out and can walk you through quick fixes by phone. For anything bigger, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number to your phone at pickup.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Charlestown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is totally normal. Most RVezy hosts in Charlestown welcome trips throughout New England, so a Cape Cod loop, a Vermont leaf-peeping run, or a Maine lobster pilgrimage are all on the table. The protection plan and roadside assistance follow you across U.S. state lines. Heading to Canada? Some hosts allow it with advance approval and proper insurance confirmation, so message them directly from the listing page before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular routes from Charlestown include the run to Acadia and a Green Mountains loop in Vermont.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel budget look like for an RV trip from Charlestown?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Rhode Island gas prices typically sit slightly above the national average, hovering around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon in the Charlestown area, with cheaper options at Cumberland Farms and the Stop & Shop station in Westerly. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Connecticut just west of the border on Route 95 where prices often run 15 to 25 cents lower per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Charlestown?
Book early and you will have your pick of waterfront sites. Rhode Island State Parks open camping reservations through their online reservation system several months in advance, and prime summer weekends at Burlingame State Park, Charlestown Breachway, and East Beach fill within hours of release. For July and August stays, lock your site in as early as possible, ideally in winter. Private campgrounds like Worden's Pond and Whispering Pines typically book 3 to 6 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Monday to Wednesday) are far easier to book and often cheaper. If you strike out, set a cancellation alert to grab a spot the moment one opens.
riparks.ri.gov/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Charlestown?
Driving conditions in Charlestown are friendly for new RVers. Route 1 (the Old Post Road corridor) is the main artery, a divided highway with wide shoulders and easy access to every major beach and campground. Side roads like Old Coach Road and East Beach Road get narrow near the ocean, so take it slow with a larger rig. Summer Friday afternoons see heavy beach traffic on Route 1 southbound from Providence, so plan arrivals before 2 PM or after 7 PM. Watch for low-hanging trees on Burlingame's campground roads (clearance is generally 12 feet plus, but some loops are tight) and stay alert for deer at dusk on Route 112.
dot.ri.gov/travel/What amenities will I find at Charlestown campgrounds?
You'll find a real range of options for RV camping Charlestown trips. Burlingame State Park offers no hookups but provides hot showers, flush toilets, a freshwater beach on Watchaug Pond, a camp store, boat ramp, and a dump station and potable water fill. Charlestown Breachway and East Beach are self-contained RV only with no hookups or showers, true beachfront boondocking. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer), head to Worden's Pond Family Campground in nearby South Kingstown or Wawaloam Campground in Richmond, both about 15 minutes from Charlestown's beaches. Pro tip: Breachway campers can use Burlingame's dump and water fill once at no extra charge during their stay.
riparks.ri.gov/campgrounds/camping-area-descriptions-specific-requirementsWhat's typically included in a Charlestown RV rental?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Charlestown listing comes ready to camp: queen or king bed, full kitchen with fridge, propane stove and microwave, bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for every passenger. Most rigs include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or solar setups. Campervan rental Charlestown options (Class B vans) are perfect for couples chasing surf at East Beach. Hosts usually provide bedding, kitchenware, and basic outdoor gear like camp chairs. Check each listing's amenity list to confirm, and message the host if you need something specific like a portable grill or paddleboards.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make trip prep simple with popular add-ons you can select at booking. Common Charlestown extras include bike racks ($20 to $40), kayak or paddleboard rentals ($25 to $50 per day, great for Ninigret Pond), generators ($25 to $50 per day for boondocking at Charlestown Breachway), camp chairs and tables, linen packages, and beach gear bundles. Pickup is usually at the host's home (often within 20 minutes of central Charlestown), or you can choose delivery to your campsite. Mileage policies vary, typical free allowances run 100 to 150 miles per day, with extra miles at $0.25 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: book the generator if you're staying at Breachway or East Beach where there are no hookups.
riparks.ri.gov/locations/ninigret-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Charlestown RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. The total includes the nightly rate, service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not charged unless there is damage or excess cleaning. After your Charlestown trip ends and the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, the hold is released. Pro tip: take photos and a quick video at pickup and drop-off to document the rig's condition.
