Camping near Greenville, Rhode Island
Greenville is a village in the town of Smithfield in northern Rhode Island, roughly ten miles northwest of Providence. It sits at the edge of the state's forested northwest corner, which puts RV travelers within a short drive of both urban amenities and the largest tracts of public land in Rhode Island. The area serves as a practical base for exploring Providence, the Blackstone Valley, and the Connecticut border woodlands.
Campground options within a short drive cover a range of styles. Primitive tent and trailer campsites and two shelters sit in a wooded area overlooking Bowdish Reservoir inside the George Washington Management Area, which totals close to 4,000 acres and offers swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking trails. Private options include Camp Ponagansett, Oakleaf Family Campground, Hickory Ridge RV Resort, and Dyer Woods Nudist Campgrounds, giving renters a mix of family-oriented parks and adults-only stays.
Northern and western Rhode Island have a climate more typical of interior New England, where four months of the year have an average temperature above 50°F. That inland character shapes the camping season, the tree cover, and the pace of bookings.
Things to do near Greenville
The George Washington Management Area is the anchor for outdoor activity in the region. It is a state-managed area for swimming, camping, hiking, bird watching, wildlife observation, and hunting, connected to the 100-acre Casimir Pulaski Memorial Park on the Burrillville-Glocester border. A bike trail network runs through the management area, with very rocky terrain for expert riders alongside dirt roads suitable for beginners. The North/South Trail passes through the campground and connects to many other trails in the area.
Bowdish Reservoir supports swimming, paddling, and fishing directly from the campground shoreline. Oakleaf Family Campground programs on-site recreation as well, with a playground, basketball and volleyball courts, cornhole pits, bocce, horseshoes, hot and cold showers, a swimming pool, and a recreation hall with an arcade area and camp store.
Providence sits about twenty minutes southeast for restaurants, WaterFire events, and museums when families want a break from the woods.

The public camping season in this part of Rhode Island is short. The George Washington campground is open from the second weekend of April to the end of October. Oakleaf Family Campground operates on a similar schedule, open from April 15 through October 31. Winter camping options are limited, and most private parks close by early November.
Summer is peak season for the state campground. Peak season runs from the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend in May through the Sunday of Labor Day weekend in September, with a two-night minimum on many weekends and a three-night minimum on Memorial Day, July 4th when it falls on a Friday or Monday, and Labor Day weekends. Sites at Bowdish Reservoir fill quickly for July and August weekends.
Shoulder-season trips in late April, May, and October are quieter and often easier to book. Fluorescent orange requirements apply for all users of the adjacent George Washington Management Area during hunting season, including hikers and cyclists, so fall visitors should pack blaze orange and check state hunting calendars before hitting trails.

How to book a site
State-run camping in Rhode Island is handled centrally. Reservations for George Washington campground are handled through the ReserveAmerica reservation site, and bookings can be made for today and up to 12 months in advance. Campers who prefer to call can reach the Reserve America call center at 1-877-742-2675.
Book popular summer weekends as soon as the 12-month window opens. Cancellation policy charges a non-refundable reservation fee and an $8.75 cancellation fee, with reduced refunds inside seven days of arrival and no refund less than two days out.
Private parks such as Camp Ponagansett, Oakleaf Family Campground, Hickory Ridge RV Resort, and Dyer Woods Nudist Campgrounds book directly through each operator by phone or website. Oakleaf is currently full for seasonal sites but still has short-term camping available, so call ahead to confirm openings for RV rentals.
What to expect on site
Expect wooded, rustic settings rather than resort-style pads. At George Washington, there are well-spaced gravel sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs, but electrical hookups are not available, water is drawn from shared spigots throughout the campground, and bathrooms are outhouses or pit toilets with no shower facilities. RV renters who need hookups or hot showers should plan around a private park instead.
GPS may direct visitors to a maintenance facility two miles before the actual entrance, so confirm turn-by-turn directions before leaving cell coverage. Roads into Oakleaf are narrow and can be tight for larger rigs, and reviewers note similar clearance concerns at other small parks in the area.
Rhode Island asks campers not to bring firewood from outside the state to protect local forests from pests, and firewood is available for purchase at state campground stores.

riparks.ri.gov/locations/campground-george-washingtonWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Greenville?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Greenville, with the absolute sweet spots being June and September. Summer days here typically run 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with cool evenings perfect for campfires, while fall brings spectacular New England foliage to the forests around Bowdish Reservoir, usually peaking in mid-October. Spring (April to early May) is quieter and great for hiking, though some private campgrounds don't open until Memorial Day weekend. Winter rentals are possible for those craving solitude, but most local campgrounds close after Columbus Day. weather.gov/box/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to be just fine, and Greenville is actually a great place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, water systems, slide-outs, awning, leveling, and dump procedures so nothing is a mystery. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class B campervan or a small travel trailer for easy handling on the winding roads of northern Rhode Island, and consider delivery so you don't have to drive it home. Hosts respond to questions through the RVezy messaging system before and during your trip, and 24/7 roadside support is one tap away. Most first-timers end their trip wondering why they waited so long.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RV rental in Greenville booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one call away whether you are parked at Burlingame State Park or pulled over on I-295. Roadside support handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their RV, and the RVezy support team can step in to help coordinate. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave Greenville, keep the RV registration handy, and you will be back on the road quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Greenville RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Greenville. You can freely cross into Massachusetts (Boston is about 45 miles north), Connecticut (Mystic Seaport about an hour southwest), New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine without any extra paperwork. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection coverage, so message the host directly from the listing before booking if you are planning a Quebec or Maritime trip. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Bring your passport for any Canada trip and confirm your route with the host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Greenville RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on a Greenville RV trip, so it helps to plan ahead. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get around 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs hover near 8 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas prices in Rhode Island typically run slightly above the national average, so filling up just over the border in Connecticut on I-395 can save a few dollars per tank. For a weekend at George Washington State Campground (about 30 miles round-trip), expect to spend $20 to $40 on fuel. Apps like GasBuddy help you find the cheapest pumps along Route 44.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Greenville?
Book early and you'll thank yourself later. Rhode Island state campgrounds like George Washington and Burlingame use the ReserveAmerica system and accept reservations up to 12 months in advance, with summer weekends filling within hours of release. For private parks like Holiday Acres or Colaluca Family Campground, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead for July and August, and 4 to 6 weeks for shoulder season. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends are the most competitive. Pro tip: midweek nights almost always have availability even in peak summer, so a Tuesday-to-Thursday Greenville RV trip is a great workaround if you missed the weekend window.
riparks.ri.gov/campgroundsWhat is driving an RV like around Greenville?
Driving conditions around Greenville are very RV-friendly, which is part of why this area is such a popular launch point. Route 44 (Putnam Pike) is a wide, mostly two-lane road with gentle curves heading west toward Chepachet and the campgrounds. Route 116 connects you south toward I-295, the beltway around Providence, which has standard interstate lanes and exits sized for RVs. Avoid downtown Providence during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.) and watch for low clearances on older parkways like the Veterans Memorial Parkway. Winter brings occasional snow, so most rentals operate April through November. Take it easy on hilly back roads in Glocester and you'll have smooth sailing.

Campgrounds near Greenville range from rustic to resort-style, but most offer the essentials you'll want. Holiday Acres in Glocester has full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer), a pool, laundry, and Wi-Fi. George Washington State Campground offers gravel sites suitable for RVs, vault toilets, potable water spigots, and a swimming beach on Bowdish Reservoir, though no individual hookups. Bowdish Lake Camping Area has full hookups and a camp store. For dump stations, George Washington has a free one for registered campers, and most private parks include dumping with your stay. Fill your fresh water tank before leaving Greenville at any private campground that allows it, or use the spigots at the state park.

fhwa.dot.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your motorhome rental in Greenville is handled securely through RVezy, so you never hand cash or cards to the host. You will pay the rental total, protection plan, and any fees at booking with a credit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before your trip starts, and the amount varies by RV and the protection level you choose. As long as you return the RV on time, in good shape, with the agreed fuel level, and within the mileage allowance, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take photos of the RV at pickup and drop-off so the deposit release is smooth and surprise-free.
