Campgrounds and RV parks near Westerly, RI

Beach days drive most trips. Misquamicut State Beach, Watch Hill, and Charlestown Town Beach sit within a short drive, and East Beach on Quonochontaug Neck offers three miles of oceanfront and abuts Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. Families commonly pair a beach morning with an afternoon at Mystic Aquarium or Mystic Seaport Museum, both about 20 minutes west. On the water, kayakers use the Wood and Pawcatuck rivers, and the Block Island Ferry runs from Point Judith. Hikers can pick up trails in the Burlingame Management Area and Kimball Wildlife Refuge, which sit next to the state campground. Rainy-day fallbacks include Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, downtown Mystic shops, and Wilcox Park in downtown Westerly.

The camping window in coastal Rhode Island is narrow. State campgrounds and most private parks run roughly from mid-spring through mid-fall. Ashaway RV Resort operates from mid-April to mid-October, Burlingame typically opens in early to mid-April, and East Beach opens later, near the Memorial Day weekend. Mystic KOA Holiday is one of the few options that stays open year-round. July and August are peak. Coastal sites, particularly at Burlingame and East Beach, book out weeks in advance for holiday weekends, and beach parking lots fill early. Parking at East Beach is very limited and fills up early on sunny summer days. Late spring and September offer thinner crowds, cooler nights, and easier reservations. Two seasonal wildlife notes matter for planners. Closure of part or all of East Beach Campground may occur during the camping season due to the nesting of the Piping Plover, a federally listed threatened species; if a closure occurs, reservations are cancelled and refunded in full. Hurricane and nor'easter risk climbs from late August through October and can force short-notice closures on the barrier beaches.

Facilities vary sharply between private resorts and state campgrounds. Ashaway RV Resort offers full-hookup RV sites with 30- and 50-amp electrical, water, sewer, cable TV, and Wi-Fi, plus pull-thru sites suitable for big rigs, a swimming pool, splash pad, playground, laundry, general store, and propane. Mystic KOA Holiday offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, two pools, mini-golf, and family programming. State campgrounds are rustic by design. Utilities are not available at Burlingame; the campground has restrooms with showers, a playground, freshwater beach, boat ramp, canoe rentals, and hiking trails. East Beach has no dump station or water filling station, though registered campers can use the facilities at Burlingame or Fishermen's Memorial once per stay at no charge. Expect quiet hours, two-vehicle limits per site, and a pack-in, pack-out approach at state properties.
