Campgrounds near Brownwood, Texas
Brownwood sits in Brown County near the northern edge of the Texas Hill Country, roughly two hours southeast of Abilene and about three hours from both Austin and Fort Worth. The city serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Lake Brownwood State Park, located about 22 miles northwest of Brownwood, along with several private RV parks inside the city limits.
Close-in options include Brownwood Shady Oaks RV Park, Riverside Park RV, G Country RV Park, and Brothers RV Park, all convenient for supply runs and short drives to the lake. The Willows of Los Trece RV Park adds another nearby choice for travelers who want quieter surroundings outside the downtown core.
The surrounding area combines open ranch country with a large reservoir, giving RV travelers access to water recreation, hiking, and small-town amenities. Brownwood has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers, mild winters, moderate annual precipitation, spring as the wettest season, and little snowfall.
Things to do near Brownwood
Lake Brownwood is the main draw. The state park has nearly six miles of trails and sits on the 7,300-acre reservoir, where anglers target bass, crappie, and catfish. Boating, paddling, water skiing, and jet skiing are all common on the lake, and the park includes a swimming area, boat ramp, and lighted fishing pier. The 2.9-mile Nopales Ridge Trail is the only trail open to biking.
In town, the Lehnis Railroad Museum, the Brown County Museum of History, and the Camp Bowie Veterans Memorial give a rainy-day or evening option. Riverside Park RV sits next to the city's largest municipal park, which has walking paths, playgrounds, and sports fields within easy reach of the campsites.
Day trips reach Hords Creek Lake to the west and Hill Country small towns to the south.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime temperatures stay moderate, and lake activity picks up as water warms in April and May. Spring is also the wettest stretch, so travelers should watch for thunderstorms and occasional flash-flood advisories when camping near creeks or low-water crossings.
Summer is the busiest season at Lake Brownwood State Park. The park often reaches capacity on weekends and holidays, and reservations are strongly recommended for both camping and day use. Expect hot afternoons, with highs regularly in the mid-90s, and plan for shaded sites or full-hookup pads with working air conditioning.
Winter is quieter and mild by northern standards, though cold fronts do arrive. Public hunt dates close the entire state park for several days in early December and early January, so confirm current dates with the park before booking a winter stay. Burn bans can also affect wood-fire use during dry stretches.
How to book a campsite
Lake Brownwood State Park reservations are handled through the Texas State Parks system operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Campsites, screened shelters, and cabins can be booked as early as five months in advance and up to 4 p.m. on the day of arrival. A daily entrance fee applies per person 13 and older in addition to the campsite fee.
If you do not check in by noon of the day after your scheduled arrival, the rest of the reservation is cancelled; entrance fees are refunded but other fees are forfeited, so call the park or the customer service center if you plan to arrive after that cutoff.
Private parks in town, including Brownwood Shady Oaks RV Park, G Country RV Park, and Brothers RV Park, generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites and offer nightly, weekly, and monthly stays.
What to expect on-site
Most private parks around Brownwood cater to long-haul RVers and workforce travelers, with full hookups, laundry, and pull-through sites suited to larger rigs. Cell coverage in town is reliable across major carriers, and grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to reach.
At Lake Brownwood State Park, sites range from water-and-electric loops to full-hookup pads, plus screened shelters and historic cabins. The front gate closes automatically from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and overnight guests receive a gate code for re-entry. Pets must be leashed and are not allowed inside park buildings. Note that the Rec Hall, group lodges, cabins, and Lakeside Trail are closed for an extended renovation.
Shade varies by loop. Cedar and oak cover parts of the park, but summer sun on open pads is intense, so shaded sites are worth requesting.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Brownwood, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Brownwood, TX?
An RV rental in Brownwood typically runs between $90 and $250 per night, depending on whether you're booking a compact campervan or a family-sized Class A motorhome. Travel trailers tend to be the most affordable, while large motorhomes with bunks and slide-outs sit at the higher end. To score a cheap RV rental in Brownwood, aim for weekday pickups in late February or early November when Lake Brownwood traffic slows down and many local hosts offer weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and check for weekly or monthly discounts on the listing page. If you're planning a Brownwood RV trip during the Fourth of July weekend at Lake Brownwood State Park, lock in your dates at least 60 days out to secure the best pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brownwood,TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Brownwood, Texas?
Great news: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Brownwood for virtually every rig on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for personal-use RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) above 26,000 pounds, which is well beyond standard travel trailers, campervans, and Class C motorhomes on the platform. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is needed for recreational use. To book, you'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identity directly through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (under $20 from your local auto club) and you're set for your Texas adventure.
tdlr.texas.gov/driver/What protection and roadside assistance come with my Brownwood RV rental?

Every RV rental in Brownwood booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so flat tires, dead batteries, or a tow on US-377 or US-67 are handled with one phone call. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers you can choose from during checkout to match your comfort level, and roadside assistance is included with every plan. First-time renters often pick a higher tier for the extra confidence. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy for RV rentals in Brownwood?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform rather than individual hosts, and every reservation includes a grace-period window that allows a full refund if your plans change shortly after booking. The exact refund amount after that grace period depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and special circumstances are reviewed by RVezy support. That means you can lock in your Lake Brownwood weekend or family RV trip in Brownwood with confidence, knowing flexibility is built in. Full policy details are available on the RVezy website during checkout, and customer support is available before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Brownwood?
Absolutely, pets are welcome on many Brownwood adventures. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Brownwood, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see only listings from hosts who allow furry co-pilots. Lake Brownwood State Park welcomes leashed dogs throughout the park and on every trail, though they're not permitted inside park buildings or the designated swimming beach, so pack a portable water bowl and a shaded spot for breaks. Riverside Park along the Pecan Bayou is also a favorite for dog walks before dinner. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you have a large breed or more than one pet, since some listings have a pet fee or size guidance.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-brownwood/park_information/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Brownwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Brownwood is one of the easiest ways to start your trip. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to Lake Brownwood State Park, Wall's Ponderosa RV Park & Marina, or your driveway in Early or Bangs, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. This is a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV, you're flying into a regional airport, or you simply don't want to drive a 30-foot motorhome on Texas highways. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, and check the host's delivery radius and fees on the listing page. Many Brownwood hosts deliver within 30 miles at a flat rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brownwood,TexasHow many miles can I drive on a Brownwood RV rental?
You'll have plenty of road to roam. Most Brownwood hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and a good number offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for an RV road trip from Brownwood to Fort Worth (about 121 miles), Austin (142 miles), San Antonio (187 miles), or out to Big Bend's gateway in Fort Stockton. Each listing shows the exact mileage allowance and the per-mile overage fee (typically $0.30 to $0.45) right on the page. Pro tip: if you're planning a wider loop through the Hill Country or out to Palo Duro Canyon, filter for unlimited mileage listings first to save money and skip the math.
travel.texas.gov/Where are the best campgrounds to stay near Brownwood, TX?
You've got fantastic options for RV camping in Brownwood. Lake Brownwood State Park (200 State Highway Park Road 15) is the local favorite, with 66 RV sites, 20 full-hookup spots, lake-view loops, and historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) cabins from the 1930s; sites run roughly $20 to $30 per night. Wall's Ponderosa RV Park & Marina offers pull-through sites up to 75 feet with full hookups and direct lake access. Brownwood Shady Oaks gives you 53 full-service sites with 30/50-amp power, city water and sewer, and free Wi-Fi. For a peaceful Pecan Bayou setting close to downtown, try the Riverside Park area campgrounds. Lake Brownwood State Park reservations open up to five months in advance and fill fast for summer weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-brownwood/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Brownwood?
Brownwood is a three-season RV destination, but fall (late September through early November) is the sweet spot. Daytime highs settle into the mid-60s to low-80s, humidity eases, and Lake Brownwood stays warm enough for late-season swimming and bass fishing. Spring (March to May) brings Texas wildflowers, mild temperatures, and excellent hiking at Lake Brownwood State Park. Summer is hot and humid with July highs averaging in the mid-90s, ideal if you love water sports but plan to run the air conditioning hard. Winters are mild with January lows around the mid-30s and rare freezes, making it a peaceful off-season getaway. Insider tip: book mid-October weekends for the best blend of weather, lake access, and thinner crowds.
weather.gov/sjt/I've never driven an RV before. Is Brownwood a good place to start?
Brownwood is one of the friendliest places in Texas for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, US-377 and US-84 are wide and well-maintained, and the drive out to Lake Brownwood State Park is just 17 miles up Highway 279 with gentle, rolling terrain and no mountain grades or city congestion. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, water systems, slide-outs, and dumping, and most are happy to send you off with their phone number for questions on the road. If you want to skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery to your campground and you'll never have to take the wheel of the rig at all.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Brownwood trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on US-67, a dead battery at Lake Brownwood State Park, or a tow into Brownwood is handled with a single phone call. The roadside team coordinates jump-starts, tire changes, fuel delivery, lockout service, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Brownwood Regional Medical Center, auto repair shops, and RV service centers are located right in town, so help is rarely far away even from rural Hill Country roads. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway and snap a photo of your VIN sticker, which speeds up any service call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trips can I take from Brownwood, TX?
Brownwood is a fantastic launch point for a Texas RV road trip. Popular routes include Austin (about 150 miles south), Fort Worth (about 150 miles northeast via US-377), San Antonio (about 200 miles southeast), Abilene (about 90 miles northwest), and the Hill Country wineries around Fredericksburg (roughly 140 miles south). Many guests also loop out to Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Amarillo for a multi-day adventure. Travel within the United States and Canada is supported on RVezy rentals; trips into Mexico are not allowed because insurance coverage doesn't extend across the border. If you'd like a one-way rental for a longer route, message the host directly from the listing page to ask.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Brownwood RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you'd think. Most Class C motorhomes around Brownwood average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans get 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG). Texas gas prices tend to run lower than the national average, often around $2.90 to $3.30 per gallon in Brown County, so a 300-mile weekend loop to Lake Brownwood and back to Austin usually costs $80 to $130 in fuel. There are plenty of gas stations along US-377, US-67, and US-84 with easy RV access, including Buc-ee's-style truck stops near Early. Pro tip: fuel up in Brownwood or Early before heading deeper into ranch country, where stations get sparser.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Brownwood?
For Lake Brownwood State Park, reserve as early as possible: the Texas Parks and Wildlife system opens reservations up to five months in advance, and summer weekends, spring break, and holidays sell out fast. You can book online through the Texas State Parks reservation portal or by calling the customer service center. Privately owned spots like Wall's Ponderosa, Brownwood Shady Oaks, and G Country tend to be more flexible and often have openings 2 to 4 weeks out, even in peak season. Pro tip: if Lake Brownwood State Park is full, check back the week of your trip since cancellations free up regularly, especially after the noon no-show cutoff each day.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-brownwood/fees-facilitiesWhat are driving conditions like around Brownwood?
Driving an RV around Brownwood is refreshingly relaxed. The terrain is gently rolling where the Texas Hill Country meets the Rolling Plains, with no steep grades, tunnels, or low clearance bridges to worry about on the main routes (US-67, US-84, US-183, and US-377). Watch for occasional crosswinds on open ranch stretches between Brownwood and Coleman, and slow down for deer at dawn and dusk, especially near Lake Brownwood State Park where white-tailed deer are common. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly from June through September, so check the forecast before towing. Insider tip: avoid driving the rig through downtown Brownwood during the high school football Friday nights in fall when local traffic spikes around the stadium.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at Brownwood-area campgrounds?
Brownwood campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Lake Brownwood State Park offers 20 full-hookup sites and 46 sites with water and electric only, plus a dump station, hot showers, restrooms, fish-cleaning stations, swimming beach, boat ramps, and nearly six miles of hiking trails. Wall's Ponderosa includes 30/50-amp full hookups, a marina, boat slips, and a fishing dock right on Lake Brownwood. Brownwood Shady Oaks adds free high-speed Wi-Fi, laundry, a dog park, and on-site propane refills. Most parks have potable water fill stations and a dump for paid guests; if you need to dump between stops, the City of Brownwood and several private parks allow non-guests to use their dump station for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking water hose since some lake-view sites are farther from the spigot.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-brownwood/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat features and amenities come in a typical Brownwood RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in Brownwood comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning (a must for Texas summers), heat for cool nights, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many listings include outdoor camp chairs, a folding table, basic cookware, linens, and a propane grill. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add a generator, slide-outs, and a TV; campervan rentals in Brownwood lean minimalist with a convertible bed and compact galley. Each RVezy listing details exactly what's included, so you can pack light. Insider tip: confirm whether bed linens and towels are included or are a small add-on so you know what to bring.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brownwood,TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Brownwood RV rentals?
Hosts make customizing easy. Popular add-ons for a motorhome rental in Brownwood include generator usage (often a few dollars per hour beyond a daily allowance), portable propane fire pits, bike racks, kayak or stand-up paddleboard packages for Lake Brownwood, extra camp chairs, and full kitchen kits. Many hosts offer delivery and setup to Lake Brownwood State Park or your driveway for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage allowances vary by listing (typically 100 to 150 miles per night, with unlimited mileage available on some), and pickup is usually from the host's home or a meeting spot in Brownwood or Early. All add-ons, fees, and pickup details are clearly listed on each RV's page before you book, so there are no surprises at checkout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brownwood,TexasHow do payment and security deposits work for Brownwood RV rentals?
Payment is smooth and secure. When you book an RV rental in Brownwood on RVezy, your nightly rate, fees, and protection plan are charged through the platform; you never hand cash to the host. A refundable security deposit (the amount is set per listing and shown at checkout) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after trip completion, assuming no damage or violations like extra mileage or late return. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, snap photos of any existing scratches, and return the RV with the fuel and waste tanks at the levels specified in the listing. That's the fastest path to getting your deposit back in full.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle the Texas summer heat in an RV around Brownwood?
Summer in Brownwood is sunny and hot, with July highs typically in the mid-90s and stretches over 100°F not unusual, but a well-prepped RV handles it easily. Choose a listing with a strong rooftop air conditioning unit (and a second unit if you're renting a larger Class A or Class C), and plan to plug into 30 or 50-amp shore power at campgrounds like Lake Brownwood State Park or Wall's Ponderosa so you can run the AC nonstop. Drive during cooler morning hours, park with the door side facing away from afternoon sun, and keep window shades drawn. Shoulder seasons (April to early June, late September to October) are the smart-money move: still warm enough for the lake, far easier on your AC and your fuel bill.
