Lake Amistad drives most of the activity. The reservoir is known for bass fishing, boating, swimming, scuba diving, and waterskiing, and holds a reputation as one of the top largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass fisheries in the American Southwest. American Campground sits on Highway 90 near the Black Brush access, making trailer launches straightforward when ramps are open. On shore, the recreation area protects rugged canyons, ancient rock art panels, and habitat for a wide range of plants and wildlife. Seminole Canyon State Park, roughly a half-hour west, offers guided tours of pictograph sites. In Del Rio, Val Verde Winery is the oldest continuously operating winery in Texas and sits minutes from downtown. Hiking, stargazing, and quiet lakeside walks are common evening activities at the national recreation area campgrounds.

The Del Rio area has a subtropical steppe climate: long, hot, muggy summers and short, mild, dry winters. Summer highs regularly climb into the mid to upper 90s Fahrenheit, and shade is scarce at lakeside campgrounds like San Pedro, so RV renters should plan for heavy air-conditioning use and stock extra water. Spring and fall are the practical windows for extended outdoor activity. April, May, September, and October bring more comfortable daytime temperatures and better fishing conditions. September is the wettest month on average, and late-summer storms can push heavy rain into the Rio Grande basin. Winter is the low-humidity, low-precipitation season and attracts snowbirds to full-hookup parks in Del Rio. Freezes are brief and infrequent, but overnight lows in the 40s Fahrenheit are common. Lake levels at Amistad have fluctuated during recent drought conditions, which can affect boat-ramp access and the walking distance from shoreline sites to the water.

Amistad's federal campgrounds are primitive. Sites at San Pedro include picnic tables, grills, shade shelters, and vault toilets, but no drinking water and no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Renters should arrive with full fresh-water tanks and empty waste tanks. An RV dump station with potable water is available along the road to the Diablo East boat ramp, for use by campers staying within the recreation area. San Pedro is best suited for larger RVs and is reached by a graded gravel access road. Private parks in Del Rio provide full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and pool access. Pets are welcome at most sites, including the federal campgrounds, provided they are leashed.
