Campgrounds and RV parks near Comanche, TX

Proctor Lake is the primary draw. The lake encompasses 4,610 surface acres with an average depth of 13 feet and covers 38 shoreline miles. It is recognized as one of the best hybrid striped bass lakes in the state, and anglers can expect to find a variety of fish including blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, white bass and white crappie. Boating, swimming, and picnicking are common at the day-use areas, and High Point Park, located adjacent to Sowell Creek Park on FM 1496, offers more than 10 miles of hiking and equestrian trails. Off the water, the historic Comanche County courthouse square anchors small-town sightseeing, and Dublin, north of town, is a common day-trip stop. Lake Brownwood State Park, southwest of Comanche, adds another swimming and paddling option within an easy drive.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. From mid-March through May, daytime highs run in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, wildflowers bloom across the Cross Timbers, and the lake fills up on weekends. The wettest month is usually May, with thunderstorms and occasional severe weather typical of North and Central Texas. Summer is hot. August is the hottest month of the year in Comanche, with an average high of 96°F and average low of 71°F, and shade is a valued site feature. This is peak season at Proctor Lake, so Corps of Engineers campgrounds fill fastest on weekends and around holidays. Book several weeks out to secure waterfront sites. Winters are mild but variable. In the winter months, the lowest temperatures are reached in the month of January with an average high of 58°F and average low of 33°F, with only occasional snowfall. Camping is available year-round at most Proctor Lake campgrounds, though Promontory operates seasonally from April through November, and some sites at the other Corps parks close from October through March.

Sites at the Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Proctor Lake can accommodate larger RVs with 50-amp electrical service and sewer connections at select sites, and concrete pads at many sites help with leveling, though summer heat makes shade trees a valuable amenity. Gates close overnight and quiet hours are enforced. Private parks around Comanche and Dublin lean toward full-hookup RV sites with Wi-Fi, laundry, and pull-through access geared to travelers passing along US-377 and US-67. Cell service is generally reliable near the towns and thinner in the more rural farm and lakeside settings. Bring shade solutions in summer, insect repellent for the river-bottom sites, and be prepared for occasional strong thunderstorms in spring.
