Campgrounds and RV parks near Friona, TX

In town, the Parmer County Pioneer Heritage Museum houses local memorabilia and displays connected to the county's farming and ranching history. Friona's Maize Days festival in September is the biggest annual community event. Day trips work well from a base at any of the nearby RV parks. Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, the oldest national wildlife refuge in Texas, was established by an executive order of October 24, 1935, and lies south of Friona. The refuge is a winter home to one of the largest populations of lesser sandhill cranes in North America. Westward, Oasis State Park is set among cottonwood trees, shifting sand dunes, and a small fishing lake. Each campsite includes a covered picnic table and a barbecue pedestal. The park has drinking water, vault and flush toilets, showers, a playground, and a dump station. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a longer drive northeast for hiking and canyon views.

The Friona area has a semiarid climate, BSk on climate maps, and seasons matter more than weather apps suggest. Spring and early summer bring the most active weather. The southern Texas Panhandle sits at the convergence of cool air from the Rockies and warm Gulf moisture, making it a hotspot for supercell thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes. May is the peak severe-weather month, with April and June also active. RV travellers should monitor NOAA forecasts and know where the nearest sturdy shelter is at any park. Summer is hot, dry, and windy, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Fall is the sweet spot for camping: warm days, cool nights, and fewer storms. The frost-free growing season generally runs from mid-April through late October, a reasonable guide to shoulder-season planning. Winter is cold and can bring snow, high wind, and blowing dust. It is also the best window for viewing sandhill cranes at Muleshoe, since the number of cranes at the refuge peaks between December and mid-February.

Expect wide-open plains, long sightlines, and steady wind. Private parks near Friona and Clovis are practical, level, and geared toward travellers passing through, with full hookups, laundry, and dump stations at most locations. Cell coverage is generally reliable along U.S. 60 and near Clovis but weakens on rural county roads. Public-land camping is a different experience. Primitive camping is available near the Muleshoe refuge, with no water or electric hookups and vault toilets only. Bring extra water, a full propane tank, and a plan for waste. Oasis State Park has showers and a dump station but fills up during holiday weekends and school breaks. Wind is the constant. Awnings should be retracted whenever the rig is unattended, and drivers of tall RVs should check crosswind advisories before travelling U.S. 60, U.S. 84, and I-27.
