RV camping near Garwood, Texas
Garwood is a small unincorporated community in Colorado County, southeast Texas, surrounded by rice fields, ranchland, and the Colorado River bottom between Houston and San Antonio. The area sits roughly twenty minutes south of Interstate 10 and within easy driving distance of Wharton, El Campo, Eagle Lake, and Columbus, putting most RV travelers within a short hop of fuel, groceries, and full-service supply stores.
The campground options around Garwood lean private and family-oriented rather than state or federal. Splashway Water Park and RV in nearby Sheridan pairs full-hookup sites with an on-property waterpark, while El Campo Lost Lagoon RV Resort and Jetstream RV Resort at Wharton serve travelers looking for paved, big-rig-friendly resorts closer to town amenities. Waldo's Camp and Whispering Oaks RV Park offer smaller, quieter alternatives for guests who prefer rural settings. Most parks in this corridor stay open year-round, making the area workable for short family weekends, hunting-season stays, and longer winter visits.
Things to do around Garwood
Family travelers anchor most trips around the waterpark at Splashway Water Park and RV, which includes wave pools, slides, a lazy river, putt-putt, and a fishing pond on property. Outside the park gates, the surrounding farmland is known for dove, duck, and goose hunting in season, and the Colorado River offers paddling and bank fishing access. Eagle Lake, a short drive away, draws birders to the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge during cooler months. Day trips reach Stephen F. Austin State Park near Sealy for hiking and river camping, Palmetto State Park to the west, and the historic district in Columbus. El Campo and Wharton provide museums, restaurants, and the closest big-box shopping for restocking between campground stays.

The Garwood area follows a humid subtropical pattern with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Spring brings wildflowers, frequent thunderstorms, and the heaviest local festival traffic, with weekend reservations at Splashway Water Park and RV and other family parks filling weeks in advance once the waterpark opens for the season.
Summer is peak family-camping season, with daytime heat indices regularly pushing past triple digits and afternoon storms common. RV travelers should expect strong demand at full-hookup sites with shade and 50-amp service. Fall is the most comfortable stretch for outdoor activity, overlapping with dove and waterfowl seasons that draw hunters into Colorado, Wharton, and Jackson counties. This is also the window when hurricanes and tropical systems can track inland from the Gulf, so flexible itineraries help.
Winter is mild but variable, with occasional freezes that can prompt temporary water shutoffs at some parks. Snowbird traffic is steady at resorts like Jetstream RV Resort at Wharton and El Campo Lost Lagoon RV Resort.
How to book RV sites near Garwood
Campgrounds in this corridor are privately owned, so reservations go directly through each park rather than a central system like Recreation.gov or Texas State Parks. Splashway Water Park and RV books through its own website and fills earliest for summer weekends and waterpark holidays. El Campo Lost Lagoon RV Resort, Jetstream RV Resort at Wharton, and Whispering Oaks RV Park accept reservations by phone or online and often list availability through aggregators such as Good Sam, Campendium, and RoverPass. Waldo's Camp is smaller and best booked by calling ahead. For summer holidays, the dove-season opener in early September, and waterfowl weekends, lock in sites several weeks out. Confirm rig length, slide clearance, and 50-amp availability at the time of booking, since some sites in the area are not fully level or trimmed for larger rigs.
What to expect on site near Garwood
Most parks near Garwood are flat, rural, and built for full-hookup RV camping rather than tent or boondocking use. Sites at Splashway Water Park and RV mix pull-throughs with back-ins, with both 30- and 50-amp service and full hookups, though levelness and tree clearance vary, so site selection matters for larger fifth wheels and motorhomes. El Campo Lost Lagoon RV Resort and Jetstream RV Resort at Wharton tend toward newer, paved, big-rig layouts with longer pads and on-site laundry. Whispering Oaks RV Park and Waldo's Camp run quieter and more basic. Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers, though it can drop in lower river-bottom areas. Mosquitoes and fire ants are present from spring through fall, and shade is uneven, so awnings, bug spray, and a portable fan are worth packing.

Summers are hot and humid with highs regularly in the mid-90s, manageable with strong air conditioning and an early-morning driving routine. Winters are mild, with average lows around 46 degrees and only rare freezes. Pro tip: aim for late March if you want bluebonnets photo backdrops, the fields between Garwood, La Grange, and Brenham are world-famous.

Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Garwood, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate for quick reference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Garwood RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
You have plenty of room to roam. Most RVezy hosts in Garwood allow interstate travel throughout the continental U.S., so a Texas-to-Louisiana Gulf Coast loop or a Hill Country swing is easy to plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host, so message them through the listing before booking if a cross-border trip is on your dream list. Popular interstate routes from Garwood include heading east to New Orleans (about 360 miles) or west to Big Bend National Park (about 550 miles). Pro tip: always confirm long-haul plans with your host so they can prep mileage and generator hours.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's realistic for fuel cost and mileage on a Garwood RV trip?
Budgeting for fuel is straightforward. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer 9 to 13 mpg. Gasoline in rural Colorado County, TX usually runs a bit below the state average, with stations in Eagle Lake, El Campo, and Columbus typically the most convenient fill-ups near Garwood. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Diesel pull-throughs are easiest at the Pilot/Flying J off Interstate 10 in Columbus. Pro tip: fill up before you leave the metro, and use GasBuddy along your route, rural stations sometimes run 20 cents cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Garwood?
Earlier is better, but Garwood is forgiving compared to Texas's most popular destinations. For Texas Parks and Wildlife sites like Stephen F. Austin State Park or Lake Texana, reservations open up to five months in advance through the official Texas State Parks reservation system, and weekends in March, April, October, and November sell out fast. Private parks like Colorado Landing in La Grange and Colorado River Thousand Trails typically need 4 to 8 weeks of lead time for prime weekends. Weekday and last-minute openings are common at smaller parks and Eagle Lake area RV resorts. Pro tip: if you are flexible on dates, book your RV first, then plan campgrounds around availability, your host can often suggest spots they personally love.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Garwood, TX?
You're in luck, Garwood sits in flat, rural Colorado County with wide farm-to-market roads, light traffic, and almost no elevation change, making it one of the easier areas in Texas to drive an RV. Interstate 10 is your main artery, about 15 miles north, connecting Houston, San Antonio, and points beyond. Watch for occasional summer thunderstorms (June through September) that can bring heavy rain and crosswinds, and during hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) keep an eye on Gulf forecasts if you're heading toward Matagorda. Deer and farm equipment on rural roads at dawn and dusk are the most common surprise. Pro tip: avoid Houston's I-10 corridor between 3 and 7 p.m. on weekdays, leave Garwood mid-morning for a stress-free arrival.
drivetexas.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Garwood?
You'll find excellent infrastructure at campgrounds near Garwood. Most private parks like Colorado Landing and Thousand Trails Colorado River offer full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and dump stations. Stephen F. Austin State Park provides water and electric sites with a central dump station and potable water fill near the entrance. For boondocking or quick refills between stops, the Pilot/Flying J in Columbus has accessible dump and freshwater. Cell service is generally solid on AT&T and Verizon across Colorado County, with a few weak pockets along the river bottoms. Pro tip: ask your host about their RV's fresh water tank capacity, the larger tanks (60+ gallons) let you stretch between fills if you camp at parks without on-site water.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/stephen-f-austin/fees-facilitiesWhat is inside a typical Garwood RV rental, beds, kitchen, Wi-Fi?
Garwood RV rentals are loaded with creature comforts. Most motorhome rentals here sleep 4 to 8 people across queen beds, bunk beds, and convertible dinettes, with a full kitchen (stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower, air conditioning, a heater, and a TV. Many include a generator for off-grid power, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lights, and seatbelted travel seats so kids ride safely. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot as a paid add-on, otherwise you will lean on your phone's hotspot. Texas summer heat makes strong rooftop AC essential, and every listing notes its AC and generator capacity. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count plus the features that matter most (generator, outdoor kitchen, bunk beds) to narrow your campervan rental Garwood search instantly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Garwood%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options do Garwood hosts typically offer?
Garwood hosts make trip prep simple. Popular add-ons include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from the host), generator hours beyond what is included (usually $3 to $5 per hour), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, linen and kitchen packages, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts also offer fishing gear or kayaks given the Colorado River runs right through the area. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Garwood, Eagle Lake, or Columbus, with most offering a 30 to 60 minute orientation. Same-day return and late-return windows are common. Pro tip: bundle the linen and kitchen packages on your first motorhome rental Garwood booking, it saves a Walmart run and gets you on the road faster.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Garwood%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at booking, never directly to the host, which keeps your trip protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, do a walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, snap photos of the odometer, generator hours, and fuel level, and clean the cabin before returning. Pro tip: keep the security deposit hold in mind when planning your credit limit, especially if you are also pre-paying campgrounds along your RV road trip from Garwood.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Garwood, TX?
Garwood is a brilliant launchpad for a Texas RV road trip. Head south about 75 miles to Matagorda Beach for Gulf Coast camping and surf fishing, west 150 miles to San Antonio for the River Walk and Alamo, northwest 130 miles to Austin for live music and Hill Country wineries, or east 90 miles to Houston for the Space Center and world-class food. Hill Country gems like Fredericksburg (about 200 miles) and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (about 220 miles) make perfect 3-night loops. The bluebonnet drive through Brenham and Round Top (about 60 miles north) is iconic in spring. Pro tip: a family RV trip Garwood loop of Matagorda then Austin then back is roughly 400 miles, easy on mileage allowances and packed with variety.
