Hico camping overview
Hico sits in Hamilton County in the rolling ranchland of Central Texas, roughly halfway between Stephenville and Waco along US-281. The area serves as a quiet base for RV travelers heading to the Bosque and Paluxy river country, with paved highway access and small-town amenities in town.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to farm-based sites and a nearby state park. Off The Vine RV Park sits on Magnolia Street in Hico with 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, and pull-through sites, and Green Deer RV Park caters to travelers wanting standard RV utilities close to town. Constantino Farms Campsites and Hoof Prints Ranch offer rural, agricultural settings for guests looking for more space and quiet. For public land camping, Dinosaur Valley State Park sits at 1629 Park Rd 59 in Glen Rose, about an hour's drive northeast of Hico.
Most private parks in the area operate year-round, while state park sites follow Texas Parks and Wildlife rules on booking windows, day-use fees, and check-in times.
Things to do near Hico
The headline attraction within RV range is Dinosaur Valley State Park near Glen Rose. The park spans roughly 1,525 acres along the Paluxy River in Somervell County and is known for well-preserved theropod and sauropod footprints across five main tracksites. Visitors can hike, mountain bike, swim, fish, and paddle the river, watch for wildlife, or view the dinosaur models donated after the 1964 New York World's Fair.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, the Creation Evidence Museum, and historic downtown Glen Rose are all within easy driving distance and make good half-day trips for families. Closer to Hico, downtown shops, the Billy the Kid Museum, and drives through Hamilton County ranch country round out a typical itinerary. Constantino Farms Campsites and Hoof Prints Ranch add on-property farm and ranch activities for families with kids.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Hico area. March through May brings warm days, wildflowers along US-281, and generally comfortable overnight lows, though it is also the wettest stretch and severe thunderstorms are possible across Central Texas. Dinosaur Valley State Park lists its busy season as March through November, so book early for spring weekends.
Summer, from June through August, runs hot with frequent afternoons in the mid-30s Celsius. Riverside sites at Dinosaur Valley are popular for swimming, but shade is limited at many private RV parks and afternoon heat management matters. Fall cools off gradually through October and November and is often the most pleasant season for extended stays.
Winter is mild by northern standards, with occasional freezes and cold fronts pushing through Central Texas. Trails may be closed due to wet conditions or weather, so contact the park before arrival for current trail status and dinosaur track visibility.
How to book near Hico
Private parks around Hico, including Off The Vine RV Park, Green Deer RV Park, Constantino Farms Campsites, and Hoof Prints Ranch, are typically reserved directly with the property or through common RV booking platforms. Availability tightens for spring and fall weekends and around Texas school holidays, so lock in dates several weeks out where possible.
For Dinosaur Valley State Park, reservations can be made for today and up to five months in advance through the Texas State Parks reservation system. The park often reaches capacity and highly recommends reservations for both camping and day use, and passes can be reserved online or by calling the customer service center before the visit.
What to expect in Hico
Roads into Hico are paved two-lane highways with straightforward RV access. Rural sites like Hoof Prints Ranch and Constantino Farms Campsites may involve gravel drives, so slow arrivals and daylight check-ins are advisable for larger rigs. Cell service is generally reliable in town and along US-281, but can drop off in ranch country.
At Dinosaur Valley State Park, expect a state-park experience rather than a resort. The gate operates from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the office is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No re-entry is allowed after 10 p.m. Campers arriving after hours will find their check-in packet at Park Headquarters, and late arrivals should call ahead so the reservation is held.

Most RVezy hosts welcome trips throughout Texas and into neighboring states like Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas, with RVezy insurance coverage valid across the United States. Popular multi-state routes from Hico include Big Bend National Park to the west, the Ozarks via Hot Springs Arkansas to the northeast, and Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage stops at the US border. Travel trailers towed by a pickup average 10 to 14 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 MPG. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through the Hill Country, budget roughly $100 to $175 in fuel depending on the rig and current pump prices. Pro tip: fill up in Hico or Stephenville before heading toward Dinosaur Valley or Possum Kingdom Lake, since rural stretches can have noticeably higher prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Hico RV trip?
Plan ahead and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Texas state parks like Dinosaur Valley, Cleburne, and Lake Whitney accept reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks & Wildlife online system, and spring and fall weekends often book up quickly. For private parks near Hico, aim for 4 to 8 weeks ahead during peak season (March through May and September through November). Midweek stays and winter dates are usually easy to grab last-minute. Insider tip: if your dream campground is full, check back a few days before your trip, since cancellations regularly free up prime riverside sites.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like in and around Hico, TX?
Driving an RV around Hico is refreshingly stress-free compared to big-city Texas. The town sits at the crossroads of US-281 and TX-6, both wide, well-maintained rural highways with gentle Hill Country curves and light traffic. Parking is generally plentiful along Pecan Street. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, slow farm equipment in spring and fall, and sudden Central Texas thunderstorms that can bring strong crosswinds. Avoid driving tall RVs during severe weather alerts, which the National Weather Service Fort Worth office posts when conditions warrant. Otherwise, Hico roads are ideal for first-time RV drivers.
weather.gov/fwd/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Hico?
You'll find a great range of options. Private RV parks in and around Hico typically offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and on-site dump stations. Texas state parks such as Dinosaur Valley and Cleburne offer water and electric at most sites with central dump stations and potable water fill-ups near the entrance. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, since hookup styles vary from site to site.
