Campgrounds near Lampasas
Lampasas sits at the northern edge of the Texas Hill Country, roughly midway between Austin and the Fort Cavazos area, and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Colorado River drainage and the western Hill Country. The town itself is compact, with a historic downtown, Hancock Springs, and easy access to US 281 and US 190, so most private RV parks are within a short drive of restaurants, groceries, and fuel.
Private campgrounds cluster along the highways just outside town. Boone RV Park, Little Lucy RV Resort, Goat Pen RV Park, TTP Estates, and Our Friends Campground handle most of the full-hookup demand, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites suited to travel trailers and larger motorhomes.
The area's marquee public land is Colorado Bend State Park, reached by driving FM 580 West from Lampasas about 24 miles to Bend, then south to the park headquarters. It offers back-to-nature camping without hookups, so most RV travelers use Lampasas as their hookup base and visit the state park for day use, hiking to Gorman Falls, and cave tours.
Things to do around Lampasas
Colorado Bend State Park is the main outdoor draw. A three-mile round-trip hiking trail leads to Gorman Falls, a 70-foot spring-fed waterfall, and cave tours can be booked separately through the park's cave tour operator at cbcaves.com. The Colorado River inside the park is open for paddling and fishing.
In town, Hancock Springs Pool is the oldest spring-fed pool in Texas, built in 1911, and remains a constant cool temperature year round, drawing families on hot afternoons. Downtown Lampasas has murals, antique shops, and restaurants within a walkable grid, plus the Lampasas County Museum for local history.
Day trips are easy: Inks Lake State Park and the Highland Lakes chain sit to the south, and Hill Country wineries and orchards line the roads near Bend and along US 281.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May and October into early November typically bring daytime highs in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, wildflower displays, and mild evenings that are pleasant for outdoor cooking. May is the wettest month in Lampasas, so travelers should watch for thunderstorms and low-water crossings when heading to Colorado Bend.
Summer is hot. July and August routinely see afternoon highs in the mid-90s, with August the warmest month on average, and humidity that pushes heat indices higher. Burn bans are common in summer at Colorado Bend and other Central Texas parks, and cooking may be restricted to containerized fuel stoves.
Winters are mild but variable. Daytime highs generally sit in the upper 50s to low 60s, with occasional cold fronts that drop overnight lows near freezing. Snow is rare. Colorado Bend also schedules public hunts and prescribed burns between September and March, which can close portions of the park on short notice.
Booking a site near Lampasas
Private RV parks around Lampasas, including Boone RV Park, Little Lucy RV Resort, Goat Pen RV Park, TTP Estates, and Our Friends Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Booking a few weeks ahead is usually enough on weekdays, but holidays, spring break, and wildflower weekends fill quickly.
Colorado Bend State Park is reserved through the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, online or by calling the customer service center. Campsites can typically be booked up to five months in advance. If a weekend shows sold out, cancellations turn over regularly, so it is worth rechecking closer to the arrival date.
What to expect on arrival
Private parks near Lampasas generally provide 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, with laundry and bathhouses on site. Sites vary from gravel with a concrete patio to grassy pads, and shade is limited at some of the newer parks, so awnings and window shades are worth deploying in summer.
Colorado Bend State Park is a different experience. Drive-up sites have potable water in the area but no hookups of any kind, the park has no RV sewage disposal facilities, and only self-contained RVs up to 20 feet are allowed. The gate is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and arrivals after 10 p.m. need a gate code arranged with headquarters before 4:30 p.m.
Cell coverage is reliable in Lampasas but spotty on the drive out to Bend. Fuel up and download maps before leaving town.
