Campgrounds near Mathis, Texas
Mathis sits in San Patricio County in South Texas, roughly 35 miles northwest of Corpus Christi along Interstate 37. The town is the closest service point to Lake Corpus Christi State Park, which fronts an 18,256-acre reservoir managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. RV travelers use Mathis as a base for lake recreation, coastal day trips, and winter stays in a mild climate.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to state park sites near the water. Mathis Motor Inn & RV Park, Totem Pole RV Park, and Emerald Hills RV Park serve travelers wanting quick I-37 access and standard hookups. Opossum Bend at Lake Corpus Christi State Park offers water and electric sites close to a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. Wilderness Lakes RV Resort sits on Park Road 25 across from the state park dam, with full hookups and three private spring-fed fishing lakes on 130 acres.
The surrounding country is flat, with mesquite and live oak cover. Grocery, fuel, and basic services are available in Mathis, about 10 to 15 minutes from the state park entrance.
Things to do near Mathis
Lake Corpus Christi is the main draw. Boating, water skiing, paddling, swimming, and fishing are all permitted, though no lifeguards are on duty. Anglers target largemouth and white bass, crappie, blue and channel and flathead catfish, and bluegill and redear sunfish, with two lighted fishing piers inside the state park and one wheelchair-accessible pier 400 feet long.
On land, the state park has short hiking and biking trails, geocaching, and a historic limestone refectory built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Birding is a major activity, and the park is a stopover for many migratory species.
Day trips from Mathis reach Corpus Christi beaches, the USS Lexington Museum, and the Texas State Aquarium in under an hour.

Mathis has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Peak camping demand runs from spring break through early summer and again during Thanksgiving and holiday weekends, when the state park often reaches capacity. Reservations are strongly recommended for both camping and day use during these windows.
Summer brings sustained highs in the mid-90s Fahrenheit with high humidity. RV travelers rely on shade, hookups, and lake access during this stretch. Fall is the wettest season in South Texas, with September typically the rainiest month and a peak in Gulf hurricane risk that can affect coastal travel plans.
Winter is the mildest window and popular with snowbirds. Daytime highs sit in the mid- to upper-60s Fahrenheit, and hard freezes are uncommon, though short cold snaps do occur. Late winter and early spring bring wildflowers and strong birding conditions.
How to book campgrounds near Mathis
Lake Corpus Christi State Park is reserved through the Texas State Parks reservation system, either online through Texas Parks and Wildlife Department or by phone at the customer service center. Standard campsites can be booked up to five months in advance, while cabins open up to twelve months out. Holiday weekends and cool-season stays fill early and should be booked as soon as the window opens.
A daily entrance fee applies per person 13 and older, and Texas State Park Pass holders enter without paying that fee. Private parks in and around Mathis, including Mathis Motor Inn & RV Park, Totem Pole RV Park, Emerald Hills RV Park, and Wilderness Lakes RV Resort, book directly with the property by phone or website.
What to expect on-site
At Lake Corpus Christi State Park, sites include a picnic table and a fire ring or outdoor grill. Water-only sites are found in the Mesquite and Catfish Cove areas, water and electric sites are in Opossum Bend, and full-hookup sites are in Javelina. Site length limits vary by loop, with the Javelina full-hookup loop accepting rigs up to about 110 feet and other loops shorter. The park gate is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and overnight guests must be in the park before 10 p.m. on the arrival date. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Alligators live in the park, and burn bans can restrict open fires, so check current conditions on arrival. Waterfront sites have limited shade and can be windy. Pets must stay on a leash no longer than six feet.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mathis, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mathis, TX?

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-corpus-christi/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Mathis, Texas?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mathis, Texas. Texas does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs used recreationally, even larger Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies approved drivers during the booking process. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is, so you can focus on planning your Lake Corpus Christi getaway instead of paperwork.

Yes, every RV rental in Mathis booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on Park Road 25 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level during checkout (hosts do not set this for you), and it covers a range of damage scenarios during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection if the unexpected happens. Combined with round-the-clock roadside help for flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing coordination, you are supported from the moment you leave Mathis to the moment you return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Mathis RV rental?
You can book your Mathis RV trip with confidence because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. There is a grace period after booking where you can cancel and receive a full refund of the rental cost, and additional refund tiers apply depending on how far in advance of your trip start you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans are protected. Review the current cancellation terms in the RVezy Help Center before booking. The takeaway: locking in your Lake Corpus Christi State Park dates early is low-risk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Mathis?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Mathis is easy to find — just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where dogs are welcomed by the host. Lake Corpus Christi State Park allows leashed pets (6-foot maximum leash) throughout the campground and on most trails, though they aren't allowed inside park buildings. Mustang Hollow Campground and Wilderness Lakes RV Resort in Mathis are also dog-friendly with open space for stretching legs. Pro tip: bring tweezers — the South Texas grass burrs (stickers) around Catfish Cove are notorious for sticking in paws. A quick paw-check after walks keeps your pup happy throughout your RV camping Mathis adventure.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/things-to-do/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Mathis?
Yes, RV delivery in Mathis is one of the most popular add-ons, and it's a game-changer if you've never towed before. Many hosts will drive the RV directly to Lake Corpus Christi State Park, Wilderness Lakes RV Resort, Mustang Hollow Campground, or even a private property in town, then level it, connect the hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. You arrive, unpack your cooler, and start your trip. Delivery fees are set by each host and usually scale with distance, so message the host from the listing page to confirm pricing for your specific campground. It's the easiest way to enjoy a stress-free Mathis RV trip.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-corpus-christi/fees-facilities/campsitesHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Mathis?
Plenty of range to make a real road trip out of it. Mathis sits right on Interstate 37, putting Corpus Christi just 40 miles southeast (about 45 minutes), San Antonio 110 miles north (under 2 hours), Padre Island National Seashore around 70 miles southeast, Choke Canyon State Park 35 miles west, and Goose Island State Park about 60 miles east. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for an extended RV road trip from Mathis. Filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host before booking to confirm the daily allowance fits your itinerary.
txdot.gov/about/programs/highway-conditions.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Mathis for RVs?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Mathis start with Lake Corpus Christi State Park (23194 Park Rd 25), which offers 77 RV-friendly sites with full hookups, water/electric, and lakefront views in the Javelina, Catfish Cove, and Mesquite loops. Wilderness Lakes RV Resort on Park Road 25 has 133 sites with a heated saltwater pool. Mustang Hollow Campground on County Road 371 features 132 wooded sites and cottages. Sunrise Beach has 172 lakeside sites, and Emerald Hills RV Park offers waterfront sunsets over 76 acres. Pro tip: the state park books out 5 months in advance for spring weekends, so reserve early.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-corpus-christiWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Mathis?
Mathis has one of the longest RV seasons in Texas thanks to its mild Coastal Bend climate. The sweet spot is mid-October through April, when daytime highs hover between 65 and 80 degrees and humidity drops. January averages a low of 44 and a comfortable high near 67, making winter camping genuinely enjoyable. Spring (March-April) is peak birding season — Lake Corpus Christi State Park is on the Great Texas Wildlife Trail with 200+ recorded species. Summer brings 94-degree highs and humidity, but the lake and RV air conditioning make it manageable. Pro tip: September is the wettest month, so check the forecast before booking riverside sites.
weather.gov/crp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be set up for success in Mathis?
You're in great shape — first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water tanks, generator, slide-outs, and dump procedures, so you don't drive away guessing. You can also message hosts before booking with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance has your back on the road. For Mathis specifically, start with a stationary stay at Lake Corpus Christi State Park where pull-through, full-hookup sites in the Javelina Loop make setup nearly foolproof. Even better, book a host who offers delivery so the RV is parked and prepped before you arrive.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-corpus-christi/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat if my RV breaks down during my trip near Mathis?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so if you have a flat on Highway 359, run out of fuel near Sandia, or your battery dies at Catfish Cove, one phone call gets help dispatched. The roadside team handles tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing coordination. Your host is also a direct resource and often knows the quirks of their RV better than anyone, so a quick message often resolves small issues fast. Pro tip: save your host's contact and the RVezy support number in your phone before leaving Mathis, and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mathis RV rental into Mexico or across state lines?
Cross-state travel is wide open: an RV road trip from Mathis can take you anywhere in the U.S., from Louisiana's Cajun country to New Mexico's White Sands or up to the Texas Hill Country, as long as the host's mileage policy works for your route. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and insurance coverage do not extend across the border. If you are craving a south-of-the-border feel, head to South Padre Island (about 3 hours south) or Brownsville instead. Always confirm your specific route with the host before booking longer trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Mathis?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest expense after the rental itself, but it's predictable. In South Texas, gas prices typically run a bit below the national average — recent Mathis-area prices have hovered around $2.80 to $3.20 per gallon. Travel trailers towed by a pickup average 10-13 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-10 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6-8 MPG. For a 200-mile loop to Corpus Christi, Padre Island, and back, budget roughly $60-$100 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Buc-ee's in Robstown (25 miles south) before heading deeper into the Coastal Bend — it's reliably the cheapest stop around.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Mathis?
Reserve as early as you can — Lake Corpus Christi State Park accepts bookings up to 5 months in advance through the Texas State Parks reservation system at texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling (512) 389-8900, and the lakefront full-hookup sites in the Javelina Loop go fast for spring weekends and holidays. Private parks like Wilderness Lakes, Mustang Hollow, and Emerald Hills typically book through their own websites or Campspot 1-3 months ahead. Weekday and winter stays are much easier to grab last-minute. Pro tip: if the state park shows fully booked, set a cancellation alert — Texas state parks see frequent turnover within 48 hours of the stay.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-corpus-christi/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Mathis for a first-time RVer?
Mathis is an easy place to ease into RV driving. Interstate 37 runs right through town with wide lanes and gentle grades between San Antonio and Corpus Christi, and Highway 359 to Lake Corpus Christi State Park is a quiet, flat 4-mile drive on Park Road 25. The terrain is mostly flat South Texas brush country — no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer that can bring crosswinds on I-37 bridges, and stay alert for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads. Pro tip: avoid Corpus Christi's downtown loops in a big rig and stick to I-37 to Highway 358 for the cleanest route to the beach.
drivetexas.org/What hookups, dump stations, and water fills can I expect at Mathis campgrounds?
You'll find excellent infrastructure for RV camping Mathis. Lake Corpus Christi State Park offers 20 full-hookup sites (electric, water, sewer), 19 water-and-electric sites, plus a dump station and potable water fill on-site. Wilderness Lakes RV Resort, Sunrise Beach, and Mustang Hollow all provide 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at most sites. Private parks generally include Wi-Fi (though signal strength varies), laundry, and showers. If you're boondocking elsewhere first, the state park's dump station is open to day-users for a small fee. Pro tip: water at some private Mathis parks can be hard or salty — bring a drinking-water hose with an inline filter for the best taste.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-corpus-christi/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat amenities come inside a typical Mathis RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Mathis come fully equipped to live comfortably from day one. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/sofa beds (so a Class C sleeps 4-6), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential for Texas), a propane furnace, and a TV. Many listings also include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, camp chairs, and basic cookware. Wi-Fi varies and cellular hotspots work well in town and at the state park (AT&T and Verizon both get solid signal). Check each listing's amenities tab before booking to confirm what's included.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/getting-broadband-rural-americaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose with my Mathis RV?
Plenty of ways to customize. Common add-ons on RVezy listings in Mathis include delivery and setup, generator use, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, paddleboards, and even fishing gear (perfect for Lake Corpus Christi's catfish, crappie, and bass). Pickup is usually at the host's home or storage location in or near Mathis, and dropoff is at the same spot unless the host offers one-way service — message them from the listing page if you'd like to end your trip in Corpus Christi or San Antonio instead. Mileage policies and pet fees are also set per listing, so review them during checkout.
tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/lakes/corpus_christi/How does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Mathis?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy, with no cash exchanged with the host. You pay your rental total, taxes, and chosen protection plan online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup. The deposit is held separately from your booking payment and covers things like exceeding mileage, late returns, or excessive cleaning. It is released back to you after the trip if everything checks out. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround of the RV with your host at both pickup and dropoff in Mathis, it is the easiest way to document the condition and ensure your full deposit comes back without any back-and-forth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first RV road trip itinerary starting from Mathis?
Here's a crowd-pleaser: start with two nights at Lake Corpus Christi State Park for fishing, kayaking, and CCC-era history at the historic refectory, then head 45 minutes southeast to Padre Island National Seashore for two nights of beach camping with 60+ miles of undeveloped Gulf shoreline. Loop back through Corpus Christi to tour the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium, then finish with a night at Goose Island State Park near Rockport to see the famous 1,000-year-old Big Tree. Total drive: under 200 miles. It's the perfect family RV trip Mathis itinerary that mixes lake, beach, and bay in one easy circuit — and the whole loop stays within most hosts' standard mileage allowances.
