Campgrounds and RV parks near Randolph Air Force Base, TX

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park protects four Spanish colonial missions south of downtown and connects to the Alamo via the Mission Reach of the River Walk. Families often pair a River Walk visit with SeaWorld San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or the Witte Museum and San Antonio Zoo in Brackenridge Park. Outdoor options include Government Canyon State Natural Area for hiking, McAllister Park for shaded trails closer to the base, and Canyon Lake and Guadalupe River State Park about an hour north for swimming and paddling. Military travelers with base access can use JBSA-Randolph recreation facilities, including the commissary and exchange. New Braunfels and Gruene, home to Schlitterbahn and Gruene Hall, are a short drive up Interstate 35.

South-central Texas has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. San Antonio averages 122 days a year when the thermometer reaches into the 90s Fahrenheit, and the temperature normally climbs above 100 Fahrenheit on 18 days. July and August can be uncomfortable for tent camping, but RV travelers with working air conditioning generally manage well. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for outdoor activity. September and October are usually the wettest months of the year, while winter tends to be the driest season. May also brings heavy rain and thunderstorms, so travelers should watch for flash-flood warnings in low-lying areas and near creeks. Winter is mild and popular with snowbirds. The thermometer dips to freezing or below on an average of 14 nights a year, and hard freezes are brief. Tropical systems occasionally track inland during August and September, though direct impacts this far from the coast are uncommon.

Most RV parks near Randolph AFB offer 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, water, and cable or Wi-Fi. Sites are generally gravel or concrete pads with limited natural shade, so awnings and sun screens help during summer afternoons. Big-rig access is common along the Interstate 10, Interstate 35, and Loop 1604 corridors. Cell coverage from major carriers is strong across the metro area. Grocery, fuel, and RV service are widely available in Universal City, Schertz, Live Oak, and Selma, all within about ten miles of the base. Summer visitors should plan for mosquitoes near creeks and drainage areas, watch for fire ants at picnic sites, and check burn ban status in Bexar and Comal counties before using fire rings.
