Campgrounds near Roscoe, Texas
Roscoe sits in Nolan County in West Texas, at the intersection of Interstate 20 and US Highway 84. The town's location on I-20 makes it a common overnight stop for RVers crossing between Fort Worth and El Paso, and most of the camping options here are highway-adjacent parks geared toward practical hookups rather than destination resorts.
Within the town itself, Freedom RV Park I-20 Location, Freedom RV Park, Freedom RV Park Florida, and Freedom RV Park operate as the closest options, offering standard full-hookup pads a short drive from the interstate. Lone Wolf Creek RV Village is another nearby choice, sitting a bit further out but still within easy reach for travelers routing through the region.
For state-park camping with lake access, Lake Colorado City State Park lies southwest of Roscoe in Mitchell County and is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, sitting on a reservoir on Morgan Creek. Roscoe has a semiarid climate under the Köppen classification, which keeps most sites usable year-round, though wind and summer heat are the dominant factors when planning a stay.
Things to do near Roscoe
The area's biggest draw for families is Lake Colorado City State Park, roughly half an hour southwest of town. The park sits on a 1,618-acre impoundment of Morgan Creek, where anglers fish primarily for largemouth bass, channel catfish and sunfish, and there is a boat ramp and fishing pier. Lakeside trails offer views of the water and wildlife, and more than 300 bird species have been sighted in the park.
Roscoe itself is known for the wind-energy landscape that surrounds it: turbines line the horizon in nearly every direction, and driving the county roads makes for an easy scenic loop. Sweetwater, just east on I-20, hosts the annual World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up each spring and has grocery, fuel, and RV-service options.
Abilene, about an hour east, adds a zoo, children's museums, and full-service retail for longer stops or resupply runs.

Roscoe has a semiarid climate, and the shoulder seasons are the strongest windows for RV travel. Spring, from March through May, brings mild days and the region's wettest stretch, with May being the wettest month, when rain falls for about 11 days and typically totals around 55 mm. Thunderstorms and occasional severe weather move through, so travelers should monitor forecasts and choose sites with awareness of open, exposed terrain.
Summer runs hot. Daytime highs regularly climb into the mid-90s Fahrenheit and can exceed 100, making shaded sites and strong air conditioning close to essential. Overnight lows stay warm, and afternoon storms are possible but less frequent than in spring.
Fall, September through November, is generally the most comfortable period: warm days, cool nights, and lower rainfall. Winters in Roscoe are short, cold, dry, windy, and partly cloudy. Freezes occur but hard, extended cold snaps are uncommon, and most RV parks in the area operate year-round. West Texas wind is a factor in every season and should be planned around when leveling and setting up awnings.
How to book campgrounds near Roscoe
Private RV parks in and around Roscoe, including the Freedom RV Park locations and Lone Wolf Creek RV Village, are typically booked directly by phone or through the park's own website. Because the town functions as an I-20 waypoint, midweek availability is usually strong, but weekend nights during spring events in Sweetwater can tighten quickly, so calling ahead a few days out is prudent.
For Lake Colorado City State Park, reservations go through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to five months in advance. A daily entrance fee applies per person 13 years and older, while children 12 and under are free. Reserve a campsite or one of 11 cabins through the same system.
What to expect
The camping style near Roscoe is functional rather than scenic. Most private parks are gravel or concrete-pad layouts close to the interstate, with full hookups, laundry, and basic amenities. Train noise from the Union Pacific line through town and highway noise from I-20 are common, so light sleepers may prefer sites set back from the frontage roads.
Shade is limited across the region. Native mesquite is short and sparse, and campgrounds generally offer little natural cover, which matters most from June through August. Bringing an awning, sunshades, and extra water is worthwhile.
Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable along the I-20 corridor, and fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Sweetwater or Abilene rather than Roscoe itself. Wildlife in the area includes deer, jackrabbits, and rattlesnakes, so pets should be kept leashed and sites checked before setup.
