Campgrounds and RV parks near Three Rivers, TX

Choke Canyon Reservoir is the anchor activity. The lake is known for largemouth bass and catfish fishing, and the Calliham Unit at Choke Canyon State Park offers a boat ramp, a swimming pool, hiking trails, sports courts, and a wildlife-viewing area where alligators, javelinas, and wild turkeys are commonly seen. Birding is strong year-round, and the park sits within the South Texas Plains birding region with seasonal guided bird walks. Day trips are easy from Three Rivers, with San Antonio roughly an hour and a half north on I-37 and Corpus Christi a similar distance to the southeast. Families staying at Riverfront RV Park or Hackberry Creek RV Park often use the town as a base for reservoir mornings and city or beach afternoons.

Late fall through early spring is the prime RV window. Daytime highs from November through March are comfortable, humidity drops, and mosquito pressure is lower. This is also peak season for bass fishing on Choke Canyon and for snowbird traffic moving through South Texas, so sites at both private parks and the Calliham Unit fill earlier than in summer. Spring brings wildflowers across the brush country and the year's wettest stretch. April and May are among the wettest months in this part of Texas, with thunderstorms that can be intense but usually brief. Roads and low-water crossings near the rivers can flood during heavy rain events. Summer is hot. Highs regularly push past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and shade is limited at many sites. RVers who visit from June through August should plan for early-morning activity, strong air conditioning, and full fresh-water tanks. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and can send tropical moisture inland even when storms make landfall well down the coast.

Three Rivers is a small town with a grocery store, hardware store, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along I-37, and generally usable at the Calliham Unit, though it thins on the far shore of the reservoir. Private parks in the area lean utilitarian rather than resort-style, with level gravel or caliche sites, full hookups, laundry, and pull-through access for larger rigs. Calliham offers a more traditional state-park feel with spaced sites, mature brush country vegetation, and lake access, but fewer amenities than a full-service private park. Wildlife is part of the experience. Alligators are present in Choke Canyon Reservoir, and signs throughout the park warn campers to keep pets leashed and away from the shoreline. Feral hogs, javelinas, and rattlesnakes are all found in the surrounding brush, so kids should stay on marked trails.
