Campgrounds and RV parks near Thunderbird Bay, TX

Thunderbird Bay sits on the shoreline of Lake Brownwood in Brown County, Texas, in the Cross Timbers region of oaks, mesquite, and gentle hills. The lake is a roughly 7,300 surface-acre reservoir created by damming Pecan Bayou, a tributary of the Colorado River. RV travelers use the bay as a base for lake access, fishing, and shaded overnight stays within a short drive of Brownwood. The closest developed camping is inside Lake Brownwood State Park, where the Council Bluff and Willow Point loops offer sites suited to trailers and motorhomes. The park sits on a 538-acre peninsula in Lake Brownwood, about 18 miles northwest of Brownwood on Texas 279, then east on Park Road 15 for six miles. Nearby private options such as Sandy Beach RV Park and Wall's Ponderosa RV Park & Marina add full-hookup capacity around the lake, while The Hideout Golf Club and Resort for Members serves its member base. Expect a mix of state-park loops with water and electric service and private parks geared to longer stays with full hookups and marina access.

State-park sites at Council Bluff and Willow Point are booked through the Texas State Parks reservation system operated on ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations are recommended and can be made as early as five months in advance, up to 4 p.m. the same day. Summer weekends and holidays fill first, so booking at the five-month window is advised for prime lakeside loops. If check-in has not occurred by noon of the day after the scheduled arrival, the rest of the reservation will be cancelled; entrance fees are refunded but other fees are forfeited, so call the park or Customer Service Center if arriving after that cutoff. Day-use entry is also reservable in advance, since the park often reaches capacity. Private parks around the lake, including Sandy Beach RV Park and Wall's Ponderosa RV Park & Marina, are booked directly with the property. The Hideout Golf Club and Resort is member-access only.
