Campgrounds and RV parks near Troup, TX

Water is the main draw. Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine both allow boating, bass and crappie fishing, and swimming, and The Boulders at Lake Tyler rents cabins and glamping units with direct lake access. Tyler State Park features a cool, 64-acre spring-fed lake, with a swim area, a fishing pier, and a boat ramp where motors are allowed but limited to 5 mph. The park store rents canoes, paddleboats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and johnboats. On land, Tyler State Park has more than 13 miles of trails through the Pineywoods, including the Whispering Pines Nature Trail laid out more than 85 years ago by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In the city of Tyler, families can visit the Discovery Science Place, Caldwell Zoo, the Tyler Rose Garden, and Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari just east of Jacksonville.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV trips. March through May brings mild temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and the Azalea Trail in Tyler, though May is the wettest month locally, averaging around 119 mm of rain, and thunderstorms are common. Fall runs cooler and drier, with the Tyler Rose Festival in October and comfortable temperatures for hiking and lake days. Summers are hot and humid. Highs from June through August regularly exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and Tyler has recorded long stretches at or above 100, including 46 consecutive days in the summer of 2011 and 70 total days over 100 that year, well above the normal of about seven. Shaded sites, full hookups with reliable power for air conditioning, and early-morning trail use become important. Weekends fill quickly at both state park loops and lakeside private parks. Winter is the quiet season. Days are usually mild with January average lows near 32 degrees, and most developed campgrounds in the area stay open year-round. Freezes are possible from late November into early April, so RV renters should watch for hard-freeze nights and take standard hose and tank precautions.

Expect tall pines, red clay soil, and warm, humid air for most of the year. Sites at Tyler State Park mix wooded loops with open lakeview sections, and the Lakeview Camping Area requires RV campers to bring and use jack pads. Roads through the older loops can be narrow, and larger rigs may need slow back-in maneuvers. Wildlife is active. Raccoons are persistent around campsites, especially in the state park, so food and trash need to be secured overnight. Ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes are common from spring through fall, and long pants and repellent help on trails. Cell coverage is generally usable across the Troup and Tyler area but can drop inside deeper wooded loops. Firewood is sold on-site at Tyler State Park, and bringing outside wood is discouraged to limit pest spread.
