Campgrounds near Arlington, Vermont
Arlington sits in the Battenkill Valley of southern Vermont, between the Green Mountains and the Taconic Range, with Route 7A running through town and Manchester just to the north. The area is a practical base for RV travelers who want river access, state-park hiking, and short drives to Bennington and the southern Green Mountain National Forest.
Camping options cluster in two bands. Private riverside and rural-VT campgrounds sit close to town: Camping on the Battenkill spans wooded acreage along the Battenkill River, with trout fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and tubing. Dorset RV Park lies a short drive north toward Manchester and Dorset. East along Route 9 toward Bennington and Brattleboro, Greenwood Lodge and Campsites offers about 40 wooded sites adjacent to the Green Mountain National Forest, with three ponds for swimming, fishing, and paddling. Woodford State Park, at 2,400 feet, has the highest-elevation campground of any park in Vermont, set on a mountain plateau surrounding Adams Reservoir. Lake Lauderdale Campground sits just over the New York line for travelers approaching from the west.
Things to do near Arlington
The Battenkill is the headline activity. It is a classic Vermont trout stream and an easy float for tubing and beginner paddling, with rentals available in Arlington and Manchester. Nearby attractions include Mount Equinox, Arlington's historic covered bridges, and trails in the Green Mountains, and the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail cross Route 9 east of Bennington.
For lake and forest days, Woodford State Park has a 2.7-mile trail around Adams Reservoir, a small beach, brook trout fishing, and rentals for boats, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Manchester adds outlet shopping, the American Museum of Fly Fishing, and Hildene. Bennington offers the Bennington Battle Monument, Bennington Museum, and a walkable historic district within a short drive of any of the area campgrounds.

Camping in the Arlington area is a warm-weather activity. Most campgrounds run from spring through mid-fall. Woodford State Park is open from Memorial Day weekend to the second weekend in October, and Greenwood Lodge and Campsites operates seasonally from spring through fall. Private parks along the Battenkill follow a similar window, opening when frost risk drops and closing before snow sets in.
Late June through August is peak season. Days are warm, the river is swimmable, and weekends fill quickly. Black flies are heaviest in late May and June at higher elevations such as Woodford; mosquitoes ease by midsummer. Ticks are present in Vermont, and repellent is recommended to reduce Lyme exposure.
September and early October bring foliage season, which is the second peak: cool nights, clear days, and heavy demand for sites with mountain views. Leaf color at elevation around Woodford typically arrives one to two weeks earlier than in the valleys. Winter camping is limited; state-park campgrounds close, though cross-country skiing is popular in the Woodford area.
How to book
Vermont State Parks and private campgrounds use separate systems, and travelers planning a multi-stop trip will need both. Reservations for Vermont State Parks can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, and up to 2 pm on the day of arrival. Bookings go through the Vermont State Parks reservation website or by calling the central reservation line; during the season, campers can also contact the park directly.
Woodford State Park is the closest state-park option to Arlington. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week. Private campgrounds including Camping on the Battenkill, Dorset RV Park, Greenwood Lodge and Campsites, and Lake Lauderdale Campground take reservations directly through their own websites. For foliage weekends and the Fourth of July, book several months out.
What to expect on the ground
Southern Vermont campgrounds skew small, wooded, and family-run rather than resort-style. Sites are usually level gravel or grass pads with a fire ring and picnic table. Full or partial hookups are available at private parks; Vermont state parks do not offer hookups at sites, but Woodford has flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station.
Roads into the area campgrounds are mostly paved, with short gravel approaches. The entrance to Greenwood Lodge runs off Route 9 through the Prospect Mountain parking area, so larger rigs should plan the approach. Cell service is spotty in the mountains, particularly at Woodford. Vermont has a strict firewood rule: do not bring firewood into Vermont state parks from outside the state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated, with USDA or state agriculture certification on the label. Buy local firewood at or near the campground.
